The meaning differs based on the hanja used to write each syllable of the name. There are 61 hanja with the reading "ji"[1] and 56 hanja with the reading "yeon"[2] on the South Korean government's official list of hanja which may be registered for use in given names. Ji-yeon was the seventh-most popular name for baby girls born in South Korea in 1980.[3]
