- The Byzantine Empire (extinguished 1453), the rump of the Roman Empire after the loss of the western portion
- The Carolingian Empire (800–887)
- The Holy Roman Empire (800–924, 962–1806)
- The Latin Empire (1204–1261), a Crusader state established during the 4th Crusade in Byzantine lands
- The Italian Empire (1882–1960), the Italian colonial empire
