Park Hye Jin (Korean: 박혜진) is a South Korean singer, rapper, record producer, and DJ.[2] In 2021, she released her debut studio album, Before I Die.[3] It won the Best Electronic Record award at the 2022 Libera Awards.[4]

Biography

Park Hye Jin was born in South Korea.[5] After living in Melbourne and London, she moved to Los Angeles, California.[6] She began experimenting with rapping and singing circa 2015, and began learning to DJ circa 2017.[7] She taught herself to produce music on Ableton.[8]

In 2018, she released her debut EP, If U Want It.[9] In 2020, she released the follow-up EP, How Can I, on Ninja Tune.[10] Her debut studio album, Before I Die, was released on Ninja Tune in 2021.[3] It won the Best Electronic Record award at the 2022 Libera Awards.[4] In 2023, she released Sail the Seven Seas.[11]

She has also collaborated with other artists: Blood Orange on "Call Me (Freestyle)" (2020);[12] Nosaj Thing on "Clouds" (2020);[13] Clams Casino and Take a Daytrip on "Y Don't U" (2021).[14]

Musical style and influences

Park Hye Jin's music has been sometimes described as "K-house".[15] However, in a 2020 interview, she stated that she does not want to be limited to that.[15] Jade Gomez of Paste wrote, "The Korean multi-hyphenate is not content with sticking to one genre, instead building her own universe full of influences ranging from hip-hop to house."[16]

She grew up listening to pop music, as well as old Korean music such as Yoo Jae-ha, Lee Sun-hee, and Cho Yong-pil.[15] When she was young, she also listened to Korean underground hip hop.[17] She cited the Korean rapper Beenzino as one of her major influences.[18] The music of Disclosure, Mura Masa, and Jamie xx influenced her into participating in the house music scene.[17] In a 2019 interview, she said, "On top of house music, my scope of genres ranges from pop, hip-hop to even old K-pop."[17]
