Revive

edit

I have revived this portal, which gets hundreds of hits a day. for better or worse, this is one of the most prominent faces of Wikipedia, so it deserves to be treated with some respect. The content is up to date, and i have added more quality articles, images and DYK's. Questions about content of individual articles should be addressed at that article's talk page, or at Wikipedia:WikiProject Pornography, not here. This page is for discussing what content goes in the portal, and how it is formatted.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 02:31, 19 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I myself have been trying to improve some porn articles over the years. Illegitimate Barrister 11:10, 10 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Is there a larger Erotica portal? If not, then one should be created and Pornography should be a subset of it. Pornography is erotica with a moral judgement attached to it. The term comes from prostitution.
I see that erotica is erroneously used synonymously with pornography here so I have had to use the neutrality dispute template to get the problem fixed. It should be the Erotica portal. Pornography should be a subset of that. That is neutral, not relying on a 19th-century term about prostitution. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.233.2.200 (talk) 22:35, 21 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Some prudish contributors want to censor (again) this article. See also the talk page. Regards, Yann (talk) 09:57, 3 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Yann: This message would be seen by more editors if it were posted at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Pornography. This talk page, in theory, is for discussing the portal, and I don't think many editors are watching it. -- John of Reading (talk) 13:07, 3 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Natalia Starr

edit

Hello, would someone here be interested in helping to the (re)construction of the page about Natalia Starr. I am strangely reverted there when trying to source the page and I do not wish to seem edit warring. Regards,--DPD (t) 01:01, 4 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

You're unfortunately running up against some of the more well-known anti-porn Wikipedia editors who have a nasty habit of POV-tag-team-editing articles of this type. Guy1890 (talk) 04:55, 4 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
I see...Well, I give up on the page until the deletion debate hopefully sets things right for good. Thanks for letting me know.--DPD (t) 10:30, 4 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Pornography definition — the word itself should be scrutinized — "erotica" is the neutral alternative

edit

This portal presents the term pornography without critically considering the worth/validity of the term itself. Some, for instance, argue that erotica is the neutral term — that pornography carries a negative connotation due to bias (often religious in nature). I think Wikipedia's presentation here could rely less on unchallenged assumptions. Why should erotica be characterized by prostitution? That's the root origin of the term pornography. All the negative issues that come with prostitution are superimposed upon erotica by this term.

"Erotica is the portrayal of sexual subject matter for the purpose of sexual arousal." "Pornography has the same definition but with a negative moral judgement embedded in it." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.233.2.200 (talk) 22:12, 21 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
"Pornography is a subset of erotica related to prostitution issues." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.233.2.200 (talk) 22:16, 21 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Erotica is the neutral term. It should be Erotica Portal with Pornography as a subset of it. Pornography is a non-neutral term unless it specifically involves things related to prostitution or moral judgements about sexual depictions. The definition of pornography should clearly show that it is not the same term as erotica — that it comes from an association with prostitution. The religious and cultural opprobrium surrounding the term pornography also needs to be separated from erotica, in terms of an objective portrayal of human behavior. It is wrong for Wikipedia to push a specific moral agenda.
Here is the Oxford dictionary definition for pornography. "Printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate sexual excitement. Origin — Mid 19th century: from Greek pornographos ‘writing about prostitutes’, from pornē ‘prostitute’ + graphein ‘write’." --- So, we're using a 19th-century term that is about prostitution. That is clearly far from objective, far from neutral. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.233.2.200 (talk) 22:32, 21 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

The part of this portal that links to 'selected films' shows clearly the problem with the current title. Film 7 contains clear value judgements, being labelled 'anti-pornography', when the subject should be 'erotica'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 45.74.43.63 (talk) 12:38, 4 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Notice from the Portals WikiProject

edit

WikiProject Portals is back!

The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.

As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.

There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.

Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.

And, if you are bored and would like something to occupy your mind, we have a wonderful task list.

From your friendly neighborhood Portals WikiProject. Hope to see you there. Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   07:42, 2 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Portal:Pornography move and update

edit

Hi. I moved the Portal:Pornography to Portal:Erotica and Pornography that seemed to be the original idea of the portal and encompasses broader concepts than simple commercial pornography. I invite you to comment here. Thanks.

See Image Display Problems discussion.

12th Transgender Erotica Awards

edit

This isn't my usual field, but this and the related articles for other years contain not just a list of winners, which is of course appropriate content if the awards are notable, but a list of all the 15 nominations (or semi-finalists?) in every one of the multiple categories. Is this considered appropriate? In other fields, this would usually be appropriate only for the most famous awards. But for these awards, almost none of the winners are apparently notable enough to have WP articles. DGG ( talk ) 05:59, 11 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

edit

Now obviously the idea of Lolita as an erotic novel is already controversial. See the Lolita article. However, given the controversy it doesn't seem like a great choice for a featured erotic novel. Might be good to remove it from the rotation... 2600:8801:1E07:DD00:E981:7D8B:568D:2338 (talk) 05:23, 20 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
