"alphabetical order"
editThe ordering seems to have been deliberately fudged to separate N. Korea and S. Korea... AnonMoos (talk) 08:33, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
- 'North Korea' is actually called Democratic People's Republic of Korea hence it's place in the list while 'South Korea' is the Republic of Korea. Republic was removed to improve readability. Looks fine to me. It would be fun if there as a conspiracy afoot but, alas, it's just Wikipedia being boring and correct. raseaCtalk to me 13:10, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
- Actually, almost all such "long form" name paraphernalia was completely ignored in the alphabetization (i.e. Germany was under "G", not under "F" for Federal Republic of Germany, Iran was after India, not before it as would be required by the long-form name "Islamic Republic of Iran", etc. etc. etc.) -- with the two conspicuous exceptions of FYROM/Macedonia (which is a very special case) and North Korea / DPRK. No matter how you slice it, different conventions were applied in alphabetizing North Korea than in the cases of most of the other countries... AnonMoos (talk) 15:33, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
- There was also a third exception, also driven by political considerations. The PRC insists that Chinese Taipei is alphebetized under "T", not immediately after the People's Republic of China at "C". — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:09, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
- That fits better with the general rule, since the main word there is "Taipei" (just as the main word in "Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China" is "Hong Kong"). Anyway, it doesn't seem to me to be quite as glaring an exception to alphabetization as in the case of North Korea... AnonMoos (talk) 18:18, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
- If you can find good sources mentioning these, it might be worth adding to the lead. Marylanderz (talk) 18:27, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
DYK Nomination
editFYI, I've just nominated this for Did You Know. I've tried to include in the nomination the names of everyone who's done significant work on it (3 or more edits) but if someone else is willing to take a gander and make sure I didn't miss anyone of the many who have contributed in the last few days, it would be appreciated. Marylanderz (talk) 18:59, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
Individual references
editSince the Vancouver Sun general source covers all the information in the table, is it necessary to have individual references for many of the individual athletes? I was thinking oof deleting them as unnecessary rather than going to the trouble of cleaning all of them up. Marylanderz (talk) 13:42, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Individual references were done prior to the opening ceremony because some of the nations that competed had already listed their respective flagbearers. It was mainly trying to prepare for this. Chris (talk) 14:01, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
