Surrey or Kent?
editAs to which Albury Albury is named after, I recall reading almost 60 years ago a book on surnames that stated there were at one time more than a dozen villages named 'Albury' in England. (Unfortunately, I could not find that book when I looked for it later.) However, most seemed to have slipped into obscurity, as we have WP articles about only four of them. In any case, the present lack of evidence for an 'Albury' in Kent does not prove that there never was one. - Donald Albury 23:18, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- It is very possible is named after Albury, Kent, or a Mr John Albury from Kent who lived in the area.
- A 1924 Albury Banner letter to the editor mentions this contested history [1], as well as the Albury historic society [2]. 2403:5809:8C3D:0:458B:35B:CBAC:1207 (talk) 11:28, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
- The Albury historic society certainly didn't think much of the Albury from Kent theory. FWIW, A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, C.W.E. Bardsley, (1983), pp. 43-44, 589, mentions parishes named "Albury", "Aldborough", or "Aldbury" in Norfolk, Suffolk, York (East and West Ridings), Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, and Somersetshire. Adding the Alburys in Oxfordshire, and Surrey, and the Aldborough in North Yorkshire, that have WP articles, that gives at least
ten11 different places in England after which the city of Albury may have been named, but nothing from Kent. I think we need better sources than have been presented so far to say anything about the source of the name.
