Merger from the Amfipoli history section

edit

It has been suggested that the history section at the Amfipoli page be merged into the Amphipolis page.

Support. The modern town and the ancient city are similar only in that they share the same site. There is therefore no reason that the Amfipoli page should have too much detail on the ancient city's history. Galanskov 07:48, 1 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

If the articles are to be merged, then the info box and the leading sentence have to be moved.

The Tomb and 2014

edit

The Tomb of Amphipolis has been excaved officially since 1964, it was not discovered in 2014. I think that in 2014 the gate was found. --C messier (talk) 23:22, 23 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Coins from Amphipolis in Germany / UK

edit

The last paragraph in the Archaeology section states that the British Museum and the auction house Gorny & Mosch "have smuggled" coins which means they actively moved the coins from Amphipolis to the United Kingdom and Germany. However, the article on the protothema website which is intended to corroborate this allegation describes that artifacts are "believed to have been smuggled" by soldiers during both World Wars to their respective countries of origin. They certainly did not so by instigation of the British Museum or auction house Gorny & Mosch which, by the way, did not even exist at this time. The protothema article states further that British soldiers donated artifacts from Amphipolis to the British Museum, but it does not say anything about the legal implication. As for the German auction house Gorny & Mosch the article assumes that German soldier certainly found coins from Amphipolis digging trenches without any proof that they really did. Above all there is no link to the coins offered at auction by Gorny & Mosch. Selling coins from Amphipolis is not illegal! However, accusing the British Museum and Gorny & Mosch without any proof and evidence of (actively!) having smuggled coins is certainly defamation and might even be an actionable statement. So I delete this paragraph and propose to wait for further evidence and certainly a more moderate wording before incorporating any of this subject. The Illyrians invaded and raided after the Phrygians left the region of Macedonia, as the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryges were already there. Someone add the Phrygians and remedy the text, also use a source newer than 1982. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.218.88.49 (talk) 12:31, 17 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Should the "country" be Greece?

edit

I'm not expert on this subject, but isn't it anachronistic to refer to Amphipolis's country as "Greece"--shouldn't it instead be Athens?

The article refers to both the ancient city and the modern municipality named after it. The infobox is about the latter. Constantine 06:18, 1 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
