What is Atlas holding?

edit

The original article claimed that Atlas was holding "the world". It is a common misconception that Atlas held up the world, and some statues do show this, but in this case I believe the circles are clearly meant to represent the heavens, in accordance with the Atlas myth. One of the circles shows the signs of the zodiac. I've amended the article accordingly. Mooncow (talk) 00:47, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Need more info on the symbols

edit

Is this supposed to be a sun dial or something? What exactly are the symbols on the rings. Is this functional art? i.e. does it tell the time or cast a significant shadow on the solstice? Are the zodiac symbols just for show, or is there some kind of meaning behind their placement? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.23.237.17 (talk) 17:25, 16 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Where is the potential dissonance between the dates?

edit

What is the force of the word "despite" in following sentence? "The piece [i.e., the statue] has since been associated with Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged and is often used as a symbol of the Objectivist movement, despite the statue's origins predating the book's publishing by two decades." I've read this sentence five times and still don't understand grounds for the suggestion of delusion like Hillary Clinton's 1995 claim (since respun as a "sweet family story") that she was named after Sir Edmund Hillary, even though he wasn't famous, or even notable, until after five years she was born. A statue installed in and on public display since 1937 was available to Manhattan resident Ayn Rand as a symbol of her philosophy as she worked out her ideas over the course of succeeding decades. If the statue had been installed in, say, 1977, then "despite" would make sense. What am I missing? Anarchristian (talk) 13:37, 19 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

better now? Johnbod (talk) 15:08, 19 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

US tons, not tonnes

edit

According to the reference it's 7 US tons (14,000 pounds or about 6350 kG), not 7 tonnes. I tried changing it with the visual editor, but gave up. If someone comes across this and has more experience and patience, maybe you can change it.

Although I don't have access to the cited reference, based on the above, I've changed the article to specify 7 short tons (= US ton). Paul August 10:51, 12 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
