Talk:Avon: A Terrible Aspect

Ker/Kerr

edit

To begin with, thank you very much, Stephenb, for your useful refinements. However, I did decide to revert (or rather adapt) one of them. As I mentioned in Note 3, the novel consistently calls Avon Ker, with one R, explaining it as a short form of Kerguelen (I am considering moving the section of Avon's first name in the Kerr Avon article to this article, but I am in two minds about it since that would make the information harder to find for people unfamiliar with the novel). Since the article refers mainly to the novel, the most consistent choice (which I originally espoused) would be to use Ker throughout. However, as your edit demonstrated, many people might see this as an error rather than a deliberate choice. As a provisional solution, I have changed all mentions of Avon's first name (except the initial one, which is a reference to the series, not the novel) to Ker[r]. While this format may strike some people (frankly including me) as distractingly bureaucratic, I can't think of any other easy solution that would be unambiguous. Suggestions on how to handle the issue more smoothly would be greatly appreciated Nude Amazon (talk) 05:42, 16 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh, yes, I'd forgotten that discrepancy! Sorry about that... I think it might be best tackled in this article, a sentence towards the beginning stating that "unlike all other references to Avon's first name as "Kerr", the novel uses "Ker" as short for "Kerguelen", and after that use Ker in the rest of the article. What do you think? This would hopefully get round the problem of people like me, who erroneously try to correct it! Stephenb (Talk) 07:43, 16 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Done :) I went ahead and moved most of the discussion of Kerr vs. Ker from the Kerr Avon article, as it's more relevant to the novel than the series, leaving enough in the main article to direct people here. I also included a sentence clarifying that the use of Ker is an explicit choice, which I hope will keep well-meaning contributors from "correcting" it. I believe I have caught all mentions of Kerr and Ker[r], if not, feel free to change them (I left in the first one because it's a reference to the series rather than the novel). The note about Kerguelen and Avon both being Celtic I got from several blogs, but the only link I can lay my hands on at the moment seems to be out of date :( I'll add it later when I find a current reference Nude Amazon (talk) 00:09, 2 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Age of Avon?

edit

Well I know this talk page is for general chatter about the article and not the story itself but I am curious about Avon's age. The article says the events in the book begin 26-27 years before the Blakes 7 we all know and love, but surely Avon as portrayed in the TV series is nearer 40 years old. Is that a typo in the article then, or a misunderstanding on my part?
