Independent British charity

edit

What does it mean to be an "independent" British charity? To me that suggests no government funding. It may refer to Booktrust in contrast to its Bookstart programme, which is government funded (was thru 2010, at least --may need {{update}})).

This should be clarified when the article is revised to handle Booktrust and Bookstart clearly. See the next section. -P64

Booktrust and Bookstart

edit

Bookstart redirects here and it seems that this article conflates the Booktrust organisation with its Bookstart programme, perhaps the result of a sloppy merge.

According to "The Story of Booktrust", "Booktrust has been promoting books, reading and writing for more than 80 years." Notable dates re the org and its name evidently include:

  • 1921, Society of Bookmen —this Society "set up" NBC in 1924
  • 1924, National Book Council
  • sometime before 1945, name change National Book League
  • mid 1980s, name change Book Trust
  • 2001, name change Booktrust

We say in the article:

  • "Established in 1992"
  • "UK government funding since 2004"
  • government funding in doubt, under negotiation, December 2010

All three points may refer to the Bookstart programme rather than the Booktrust organisation. One crucial source (Ext link Michelle Pauli) says Bookstart was established in 1992.

I have not substantially revised the body of the article, only marked its needs for attention (article templates and WPUK template above), and matched all reference formats to the apparent style. I have not read the References or External links --which include three {{dead}} official sources.

  • External links: I have fixed the mis-directed link to one crucial source that says Bookstart was established in 1992. I have added "The Story of Booktrust", another crucial source (see above).
  • Categories: I have added Category:Organizations established in 1924 (altho 1921 may be appropriate), without deleting the 1992.
