CAPS

"*Please note players that have 0 caps have come on as a substitute, therefore have not gained a full cap."

--> I think, when you have come on as a sub, you still have made your first cap. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.202.218.230 (talk) 12:42, 12 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Linking to players without articles/Conor Coady

edit

At present, all players within the "Players" section are linked in anticipation of an article, whether or not they currently have one. It seems to me that this is much easier than trying to keep track of when each one makes his club debut in order to add in a few square brackets. However, an editor has twice removed Conor Coady's links (although not the rest, creating an inconsistency in this article) on the basis that Coady's article was created prematurely and subsequently deleted. Is there a general policy not to link to players in anticipation of a currently non-existent article, that I'm not aware of? If not, is there a good reason not to do it?

Incidentally, I've reverted that edit for now because of the inconsistency, but if agreed, we can always reinstate it and apply the same format to ALL players currently lacking an article. Doing it for just one player makes no sense at all. Clicriffhard (talk) 22:04, 28 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

If an individual has no claim to notability (i.e. they are not currently eligible for an article), they should not be linked, as that can encourage editors to create articles where none are desired. – PeeJay 11:35, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ok. Is there a consensus for that, or is it your opinion? Because obviously it's a massive pain to try to follow the club careers of a few hundred relatively low-profile youth footballers across the England youth age groups, so I'd like to know that it's strictly necessary.Clicriffhard (talk) 14:19, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
There is not just consensus, but policy (see WP:REDLINK). I'm sure you will note that WP:REDLINK states that "articles should not have red links to topics that are unlikely ever to have an article"; this works in conjunction with WP:CRYSTAL, which says that we should not assume future events until they have happened and been reported, so at this moment, Conor Coady and the rest of the redlinked England youth players should not be presumed to be worthy of articles based on a potential for notability. – PeeJay 18:55, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
You'll probably think that I'm nitpicking, but just because one doesn't assume a future event, that doesn't make it unlikely. In this particular case, obviously Coady is highly likely to have an article in future - he's been on the bench for Liverpool's first team at the age of 17, has been extensively touted by the management as an imminent first-team player, and has captained England u17s to a rare European Championship title, so it would take a particularly bizarre turn of events to keep him from achieving notability in the near future. I don't say this to make a special case for him, but because it illustrates the excluded middle between "assumption" and "unlikeliness". One can easily say that an article is likely to transpire without assuming that it will transpire, so I don't agree that it's an inevitable interpretation of the two policies. But if there's a consensus, then fair enough. It's a massively inefficient way to maintain the article, but OH WELL. You know? Oh well. Thanks for taking the time to have the discussion anyway. Clicriffhard (talk) 20:19, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
No worries. By the way, I realise this isn't standard practice for most article writers, but when I create an article, I tend to search Wikipedia for mentions of that topic in other articles. Perhaps this is something we should espouse in other editors. – PeeJay 20:44, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
It would certainly be a lot easier than trying to keep track of all of the players' careers! Is there anywhere that this could be suggested, say, within WikiProject Football? I'm not very well-informed about the machinations of Wikipedia, so you might know better than me. Clicriffhard (talk) 20:50, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I'll try suggesting it at WT:FOOTY. In the meantime, you may wish to keep a list of redlinked England youth players in your userspace. You could then use that as a personal watchlist. If one of them turns blue, you'll know you can link the mentions of those players in the mainspace articles. – PeeJay 01:23, 30 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
That's a brilliant idea, thanks. Clicriffhard (talk) 01:42, 30 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dates of birth

edit

I'm afraid we do need sources for people's dates of birth. See WP:V, which says that all information included here should be verifiable from reliable published sources, and WP:BLPPRIVACY, which says that "Wikipedia includes full names and dates of birth that have been widely published by reliable sources, or by sources linked to the subject such that it may reasonably be inferred that the subject does not object." I'm aware that until now we've been too casual about this sort of thing, but please don't put any dates of birth back into the England under-age teams pages without a reference to a reliable published source to verify them. Thanks for your co-operation. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 13:10, 5 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
