Who was the Boss?

edit

Some suggest that Yale was only a capo under Joe the Boss Masseria, rather than being his own man, but I have never read any evidence, anecdotal or otherwise, to support this assertion. What we do know is that Torrio and Yale were leading members of the Five Points gang before 1908. The Five Points gang was run as an American style street gang, not a Sicilian style Mafia family. Around 1908 Torrio and Yale moved to Brooklyn and set up operations there. In 1915 Torrio left New York for Chicago, leaving Yale to inherit their operations. At this time Masseria was still a soldier in the Morello family, which was then lead by Nick Morello and based in Manhatten. Masseria didn't become undisputed leader of the Morello family until 1922. I have not read anything to suggest that Masseria made any attempt to gain influence over other Italian gangs before October 1928, when Toto D'Aquilla was killed, supposedly by Peter Morello. Frankie Yale was killed in July 1928, supposedly by men working for Al Capone. To me it seems like Yale's death may have been the catalyst for Masseria's ambition to takeover. can anyone clarify this further? Seveb 21:54, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't think it was the catalyst and I think Yale is mainly lumped in with Masseria's group due to his crew being inherited by Augie Carfano (who was Yale's roommate at the time of his death) and Carfano becoming a longtime capo in the family that housed the remnants of Masseria's group. Also who put that Luciano made Carfano retire in favor of Joe Adonis? That isn't remotely true and can't be supported by any facts

So why did Carfano move to Florida?

General Comments

edit
  1. Anastasia was never a Yale associate...
  2. Joe Adonis was associated with Frankie Marlow, not Yale.
  3. When Lovett was killed, Vince Magano had not even entered the country yet.
  4. Marlow did not inherit Yale's gang, though it was rumored that he was killed by Carfano due to a debt to Yale.

Johnny Giustra & Sam Pollaccia? You Be The Judge

edit

Sam Pollaccia and Johnny "Silk Stocking" Giustra were deleted from the mention because they are the invention of an online RPG. The New York Times has no record of their deaths or any arrests or suspicious mentions dating back as far as 1851.

Is that so? I've had a look around, here's what I've found...

Two of the murder victims were Brooklyn men. One, John LUQUORI*, taxi driver and cement worker of Gravesend, who once ran a roadhouse, we"nt for a ride. His body, only two hours dead, was found to-day bullet-riddled and trussed in a laundry sack in an ice truck abandoned in a Wallabout side street. Silk Stocking Johnny GUISTRA was a Brooklyn laundry racketeer with ambitions. His body was found in the hallway of a Manhattan tenement. His own pearl-handled pistol lay beside it. It hadn't been fired. Walter FOWLER, labor foreman and member of the wire lath union, had a conference at his home in Manhattan with four men and was found murdered on the stoop of a nearby tenement. Anthony BUONACOSI, an alleged bootlegger, met a bullet in a Manhattan candy store. Police arrested Joseph SCELZO, a Sanitation Department employe, and questioned him about BUONACOSI. This was the only arrest in the four killings. Seveb 23:53, 3 August 2007 (UTC)SevebReply

Accuracy

On an unrelated note most of the organzied crime entries on Wikipedia need to be fixed. An example on this page would be the myth that Frankie Yale was head of the Unione Sicilliana which is impossible since records dating back to Yale's entry to the country lists him as being Calabrian. These pages have a lot of people not doing research and quoting "authors" who also didn't do their research. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.215.252.167 (talkcontribs)

I have to agree with this as a general comment, but things will improve over time. Regarding the specific issue of whether or not Yale was head of the Unione Sicilliana, here are a couple of things to consider ; - Immigration records which show Yale as Calabrian, 1) Could Yale have been born in Calabria of Sicilian parents? For example Carlos Marcello was born in Tunisia, but was still racially Sicilian and able to lead the New Orleans Mafia. 2) As it is unlikely that any New York Mafioso of the twenties was in the habit of perusing the immigration records, would it have been possible for Yale to pass himself off as Sicilian? He was a powerful and feared figure at the time, who would want to argue with him? Seveb 00:03, 4 August 2007 (UTC)sevebReply

A related issue is the somewhat less-than-encyclopedic tone of much of this article; it reads almost like a conversation. This factor further suggests that many of the facts related therein may be somewhat less than factual. Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 19:31, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

2 Joe Adonis

edit

Frankie Yale is always linked to the battle between the Mafia and the "White hand" Irish for control of the waterfront. The final "showdown" with the White handers is said to have occurred at the Adonis Social club, run by Joe Adonis, doesn't that suggest a link between the two? Weren't Yale and Marlow close associates?Seveb 00:13, 4 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Where's Frankie Marlow?

edit

I've just been reading "The Big Bankroll" by Leo Katcher, a book about Arnold Rothstein, and in it Frankie Marlow's name crops up as often as those of Dwyer, Madden, Yale, Luciano or Costello and yet he doesn't have a page in Wikipedia and is very hard to find mention of on the web full stop. Why is that?Seveb 00:13, 4 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

3 Vince Mangano

edit

I read Vince Mangano arrived in the United States in 1922 and Lovett was killed on Halloween 1923, is that not correct? Seveb 21:24, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've read both 1922 and 1924. But the person abov eis right in stating that Mangano and Anastasia both definitly didn't have anything to do with Yale at this point. This article is in need of citing in a lot of ways

Fair use rationale for Image:Yalef.gif

Image:Yalef.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Final Days

This needs to be revised, it almost reads like a novel. 'Hard eyed men'sounds ridiculos and since whn does tommy gun fire buckshot? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.10.97.187 (talk) 12:33, 7 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

This entire article needs to be revised. The language and style is completely inappropriate and reads like a novel. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RobLikesBrunch (talkcontribs) 06:39, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ditto. "A shotgun blast struck the Brooklyn gang boss on the left side of the head while a submachine gun bullet sliced through his brain. Either wound would have killed Yale instantly. The now out-of-control Lincoln veered to the right, hopped the curb, and crashed into the stoop of a brownstone at No. 923." It's awful. EEng 12:45, 24 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
