Content Nightmare

edit

Fullwidth/Halfwidth are elements of an outdated typesetting system. Fullwidth is pretty much the equivalent of monospace, while halfwidth is equivalent of proportional. All of those are needed during the days of movable type, but they should not be included in the same font on the computer because of separation of presentation and content.

On the computer, monospace/proportional are correctly implemented as part of the layout engine, but Asian computer designers failed to understand the concept of separation of presentation and content, so they added all the full/halfwidth stuff into the same typeface. --Voidvector 18:35, 30 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

You might as well complain that the Chinese should have moved to a limited alphabet thousands of years ago, so we wouldn't have these problems now. What's done is done, all that remains is to deal with it and move on.

By the way, both "fullwidth" and "halfwidth" are monospace. In a proportional font the distinction may not exist at all. --61.214.155.14 (talk) 04:58, 10 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Proposed merge with "East Asian width"

edit

Since no-one is discussing the merge with "East Asian width", and that article doesn't actually exist, I'm going to remove the template from the page. --61.214.155.14 (talk) 04:47, 10 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
