Jan '06 Liverpool game
editThe comments on the Jan 06 Liverpool game and celebration seem a little trivial. Unless serious disciplinary action is brought to bear against Neville, the event is of little significance when considering an overview of his career.
POV
edit- There is a problem with Manchester City or Liverpool fans choosing to deface this article; or, at the very least, put unneutral comments thereon which show up Neville badly and their clubs favourably. I'm also very uneasy with the use of the word 'caps' in the table to describe club appearances - this only applies to international football. Bentley Banana 08:07, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
- "The elder Neville brother has occasionally been criticised by for supposedly underwhelming displays, but more thoughtful football observers see a solid, experienced defender who rarely puts a foot wrong and can lead teams from the back." Any kind of sourcing or attribution here? Or is this just ridiculously biased for fun? Also here: "For some followers of football this has turned Neville from a hate figure, reviled for his petty devotion to Manchester United to a cult figure, celebrated for his loyalty and hard graft for both club and country." Right, that's exactly what the Fiver calling him Che Neville means. He's an admired cult figure.
It is in no way accepted that he will definitely return to the England team as first choice right back, particulary since the recent change of manager. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.134.24.179 (talk) 03:46, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Honours
editTechnically he didn't get a medal and didn't feature in one game let alone five. As much as I would want him to have an 8th title has he won the EPL eight times? (Piyush05 20:48, 11 May 2008 (UTC))
- I agree. Also, he's only won one Champions League title, since he wasn't involved in the 2008 final. – PeeJay 09:55, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
- it says he did'nt play any part in the champions league, but he came on as a sub against Roma. Dose this not make him eligible for a medal.
I thought everyone in the 25-man CL squad received a medal. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.42.110.139 (talk) 20:58, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Yea thats what i thought, sure Keane and scholes got a medal in 99. so i would assume he will get one, or at least be credited with the honour.Gero13 (talk) 21:29, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
According to the AP, it seems like those that spend time on the pitch or bench get a medal. (Scholes finally picks up Champions League medal). I don't know exactly though. Calebrw (talk) 22:08, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Medals 4.03 "Thirty gold medals are presented to the winning club, and 30 silver medals to the runner-up. Additional medals may not be produced."
Although players who are not in the 25-man squad do not receive their medals at the ceremony, they certainly receive them at a later date, so I would say Neville has won two titles. 68.42.110.139 (talk) 05:09, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Neville has not and will not receive a Premiership medal for 2007/08. He did not play a single match and it is unlikely that the FA will give him a special dispensation (like they did for Kuzczack and Pique). However, i believe that he was given, or at least will be given a Champions league medal for 2007/08. My understanding is that every player in the Champions League squad of 25 receives a medal, regardless of whether or not they have played a game in the tournament (thats why Johnny Greening has a winners medal and Henry does not). Gary clearly was in the squad of 25 as he played against Roma in the QF 2nd leg. So I think that his honours list should include a 2nd Champions League title. Anthem
editMaybe there should be an explaination on this page about why Neville never sings the National Anthem The C of E (talk) 07:16, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
- First, can you prove that he never sings the anthem? Second, is there a sourceable reason why he doesn't? – PeeJay 08:10, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
- Yes just look at this video [1] and this one [2] and while you're at it, heres another one [3], I think thats enough proof that he doesn't sing, but I have no idea why he never sings it. The C of E (talk) 09:50, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
- It's probably because he has far more important things to think about than singing an archaic durge. Nevertheless, if you don't know the reason why he doesn't sing, it's not worth mentioning (and probably wouldn't be worth mentioning even if you did know the reason). – PeeJay 13:43, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
- I'm sure I heard Neville has a political reason for this and that he is actually opposed to the national anthem. Of course, this may make it sound as though I am a republican who is keen to promote Neville's views on the matter but I honestly heard somewhere. I'm probably going to give Neville's political views a good Google later and see what comes up because I swear there was a time when they were quite high profile. Champions league medal 2008?
editI know Neville wasn't part of the match-day squad for the final, but 30 medals are handed out [4] (page 6), so I would assume as club captain he got one, but can't be 100% sure. Anyone know who the 30 medalists were, or how this info could be found out? Derry Boi (talk) 16:42, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- The thing about Gary Neville is that he never joined the squad for the medal ceremony after the 2008 final, and there has been no indication that he received one afterwards. Furthermore, unlike Scholes and Keane in 1999, Neville played an extremely small part in United's Champions League campaign last season, so he may have declined a medal on the basis that he had not played a big enough part. Anyway, there is no source to prove it one way or the other, so we should really assume that he did not receive a medal. – PeeJay 19:24, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- Old argument, but Neville was one of 26 players to feature in a Champions League match for United that season. It seems to me fairly likely that he got a medal. He certainly would have qualified for one despite only playing 13 minutes in the competition. Whether he accepted one or not is another matter. Decorativeedison (talk) 22:36, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- Indeed, despite my earlier position, I agree. As one of the players registered for United's Champions League squad in 2007-08, Neville would almost certainly have got a medal. – PeeJay 23:38, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- The thing is, doesn't this mean that 2007/08 Champions League winners should be added to the honours for other players who featured that year. Dong Fangzhuo played 23 minutes for United during the competition for example. Danny Simpson played a couple of matches as did Jonny Evans, Chris Eagles played a whole match etc. Decorativeedison (talk) 13:53, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
- I think that depends on whether those players were included in the 25-man "A squad" or the "B squad", which includes any player under the age of 21 who has played for the club for at least 3 years. I would wager that Simpson, Evans and Eagles were included in the B squad, but I can't say for certain about Dong. Gary Neville, however, was certainly in the A squad and, in my opinion, he should be listed as having won a Champions League medal in 2008. – PeeJay 19:48, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Premiere League
editWhy is the titel of 2007-2008 taken out again?. Neville has won eight championships with Manchester United.
- No, he hasn't. You have to play in at least 10 Premier League matches to win a medal, or be given special dispensation, and Neville did not play in the league in 2007-08. – PeeJay 11:35, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

edit@peejay "No, he hasn't. You have to play in at least 10 Premier League matches to win a medal, or be given special dispensation, and Neville did not play in the league in 2007-08."
I didn't know that. Thanks for the explanation.
bias
editthere are large amounts of bias towards Neville and Manchester united in this article for example:
Neville started at and has played his entire career so far at Old Trafford, making him to date a rare one club man.
Gary emerged as part of Alex Ferguson's phenomenal youth-oriented side of the 1990
Since then he has remained popular with fans for his leadership skills and no-nonsense attitude. please can someone change these or remove the protection on this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.137.98.140 (talk) 22:38, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
- First, one-club men are rare. Second, yes, "phenomenal" ought to be changed. Third, Neville is popular with fans. – PeeJay 00:22, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
No way is this bias, in my opinion shouldn't be changed. It is an article, what do you expect? If people are reading this for the first time, they should be told he is a fan favourite due to his leadership qualities, because he is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ollymtfc (talk • contribs) 12:29, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
Neville's height
editis neville really 1.80 m tall?
I mean how is this possible that neville is taller than rooney (1.78 m)?
Superaryan85 (talk) 19:26, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- What difference does it make? Both heights are sourced, so that should be enough. – PeeJay 21:14, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Neville Neville
editCan someone change the incorrect information shown in the introductory paragraph regarding Gary's father Neville Neville? He was a good cricketer who played for Greenmount in the Bolton League, but he never played cricket for Lancashire County Cricket Club (a fact that is correctly shown on Phil Neville's page). See the Lancashire club's list of players for verification. http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Lancashire/Players/N.html Kgbrook (talk) 15:41, 21 November 2010 (UTC)
- Good point, the dodgy claim has now been removed. Nev1 (talk) 12:44, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
Champions League Honours
editsurely this should be 2 - in 1999 and 2008? he played in the 2008 CL, was listed in the squad and was club captain and only missed out on the final squad due to injury. my understanding is that he received a medal for it as club captain. this has been discussed above - please correct this. 129.11.77.198 (talk) 12:26, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
- I agree it should be two, but even the official website doesn't credit him as a 2007/08 Champions League winner: http://www.manutd.com/en/Players-And-Staff/First-Team/Gary-Neville.aspx?section=HonoursAndAwards . We need a good reference saying otherwise, at the moment we'll have to leave it as it is. Decorativeedison (talk) 14:10, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
There doesn't seem to be a list anywhere of who got a medal or not.
according to UEFA the rules are: '2.03 Thirty gold medals are presented to the winning club, and 30 silver medals to the runners-up. Additional medals may not be produced.'
this causes a problem. the club has not actually stated (as far as i can find) who those medals went to. if champions league honours is defined on wikipedia on the basis of medal wins, and in the absence of ANY declaration by the club or UEFA, NO united (or ANY CL winning or runner up) player can be credited with CL honours. neither can it be defined by media sources which may not be reliable - for example Park JS is not down as being credited with the CL on the united website (http://www.manutd.com/en/Players-And-Staff/First-Team/Jisung-Park.aspx?section=HonoursAndAwards) but is widely reported in the media (http://edition.cnn.com/2009/SPORT/football/09/18/football.manchester.park.sung/index.html) to have a medal or have been part of the winning squad.
i'd suggest that being part of the official 25 man squad named to UEFA as competing in the competition for the season in which the club wins the trophy should be sufficient - it is effectively that 25 man team that has won the competition. this is the case for other UEFA and FIFA competitions.
i think short of a statement by the club/uefa/the player we'll never know precisely - tbh, if you can be pictured kissing the trophy, you've probably won it! http://c.photoshelter.com/img-get/I0000TBMPGsDWgw4/s 129.11.76.215 (talk) 15:41, 3 February 2011 (UTC) all about man utd —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.178.222.1 (talk) 14:50, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Coaching Career
editThere should be a section encompassing today's news that Gary Neville has been appointed to the coaching staff for the England national team. It may also be worth mentioning that he started studying for his UEFA coaching badges in February 2011 and Alex Ferguson and Manchester United tried to retain him in some capacity as a coach upon retirement, with Neville instead opting for a media career. Until England came knocking - which will allow him to keep his Sky Sports role.

Introduction Fixes
editThe wording in the last part of the introduction mention Neville's newly appointed coaching role for the English National Team is poor. Perhaps a quick revision of the diction and punctuation would help. Also, perhaps adding a "titles won(club or individual)" section in the bio box next to apps & goals would be a good help for a quick reference. I mean, of course, an absolute number. The details already have a section. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ejvice (talk • contribs) 17:49, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Error with his current profession
editHe isn't the coach of the England National Team. Roy Hodgson is. I don't know much about editing Wikipedia. Can anyone sort that out? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.92.173.178 (talk) 00:01, 22 September 2014 (UTC)
> Okay, so someone will have to edit this because as of 2 December 2015, he was noted as the Valencia CF head coach. And Roy Hodgson is not the 'coach' of the England First Team, he is the 'head coach', Gary Neville was the 'First Team Coach' (Refer to the FA page) but I have no idea how he will fit in with England, whether he will leave permanently or still continue. Also, I ponder how he will handle his contract with BT Sport. Nonetheless, the point stands.
Somebody please, ammend the club name where it reads, "valenica" instead of Valencia C.F. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.174.2.89 (talk) 13:35, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
Simple edit regarding his Post-Playing Career
edit> In 2015, Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs gained planning permission for their 2nd Manchester hotel which will not be football themed. The pair will be redeveloping Manchester's former stock exchange building into a boutique hotel. Giggs and Neville bought the 1906-built Northern Stock Exchange Building for £1.5 million in 2013. The Grade II-listed building is on 4 Norfolk Street and will have 35 beds, a gym, spa, roof-top terrace, restaurant and bar. Zerum, Gary Neville’s property consultancy, acted as agents for the application for planning permission.[71]

- The article currently says that Phil Neville and Tracey Neville are twins. Gary is not described as a twin of either of them. Walt Yoder (talk) 01:32, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

Amongst the greatest defenders of all time
editSo shouldn't we at least discuss including in his summary that he is often regarded as one of the greatest defenders of all time? See for example the comments of top professionals; Andriy Shevchenko said he was his tougest opponent, Juan Sebastian Veron proclaimed that he was "world class", and Paolo Maldini described him as a raging tiger in a plain full of wilderbeast. I don't think I need to list the full extent of highly renowned pundits and expert journalists who have pronounced him to be amongst the greatest of his generation, this is widely known. Thus, as a natural corollary of that, and especially considering the advancement of the game since the days of Pele and Beckenbaur, I feel it's only fair and just that we should discuss his status as amongst the very finest defenders the game has ever seen. 2604:3D09:37F:DB10:ADCD:602E:42B9:4556 (talk) 03:58, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
Playing career most important
editI feel like information about his actual playing career with Man United should be at the start of the article, rather than his coaching career Scooch Cubing (talk) 13:02, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Remove the fact that he is Englands most capped right back of all time, because its wrong. Kyle Walker has more caps. 83.249.12.29 (talk) 12:24, 5 October 2024 (UTC)

editIt doesn’t say anything in the first sentences about him being a manager. 2A02:AA16:387D:2280:547E:CB8D:8C88:C6D2 (talk) 21:26, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
