Too many dubious claims

edit

I flagged the entire article because it reads like an essay. It quotes dubious sources as factual which at best are only hypotheses. All the sources are cherry picked to enhance the general narrative, which is argumentative. Various people have contributed their own thoughts on the matter, making it even worse. It doesn't matter if the points are valid or not, it is simply not encyclopedic. If you read the first section on parenting it even contradicts itself. It says most parental behaviors are not influenced by the gender of the child, a dubious claim in itself, but then goes on to say how important family dynamics are. It's just nonsense. I think the whole article is extremely suspect.--Murky Falls (talk) 03:55, 17 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

I aimed to fix this, by removing some and properly citing others. IBSloat (talk) 19:35, 4 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Proposed merge with Gender roles in young children

edit

Some significant overlap in scope here, with titles and ledes suggesting that the same ground is being covered twice. McGeddon (talk) 16:50, 16 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Now merged. CKV (talk) 09:04, 29 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

New Sub-Section in the Stereotypes in the Media Section

edit

Hello! I would like to add more recent media into this section instead of just Barney and the Teletubbies. These are shows that many children do not watch anymore. I would like to add information on stereotypes present in Disney media and maybe a few effects this may have on childhood, as Disney media is more prevalent in childhood than what is currently stated. I have found sources for this topic. Check out my sandbox to see my sources and my contribution rough draft! Please let me know if you have any thoughts or concerns. Gender Roles in Children's Toys

edit

Gender roles in childhood are often expressed through gender typing toys, parallels can be seen in historical changes of gender roles in North American society and to the amount of gender-typing in toys. Gender typing toys is “[…] the process through which toys become associated with a particular gender within a culture”.[1] Gender typed toys are a marketing scheme tied to gender roles that artificially segment the toy market. Cultural shifts in North America of large toy corporations like Mattel and Lego show that gender inclusion in toys is an important trend in toy design. Remnants of gender-typed toys persist, particularly in the toy catalogues of companies with long-standing brand history within gender typed markets.

Proposed Changes

edit

hello, I believe the incorporation of the sections of gender identity and how children express their gender identity, in to one area would make the article easier to follow. I also propose the removal of all dubious claims from these sections and the addition of more factual evidence.

I also believe combing parental influences and environmental factors and parental influences is a good idea because both areas cover similar information. we can also remove the personal opinion like claims from this section and add in additional information with proper sources. I Combined Gender Identity and How Children Express Gender Identity

edit

In this new section I keep all the information that was substantiated, removed the sentences that were personal opinions and had no clear source. Feel free to add information to this section as long as it is free of personal bias. IBSloat (talk) 16:29, 4 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Combination of Parental influences and Environmental factors and parental influences

edit

I combined these two sections as they covered similar information. I removed sentences that were of a more personal opinion, fixed citations, added properly cited statements, and restructured the two sections in to a more well written area. I welcome additional research to be done on this article. IBSloat (talk) 02:08, 6 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Proposed section on Children's Literature on Gender

edit

I propose a section be added on the many story books available to help teach children about gender. books like " I am Jazz by Jessica Herthel", "Jacobs New Dress by Sarah Hoffman" or "Annies Plaid Shirt by Sarah B Davids" these books help children but also can be an effective comunication method between adults and children.
