"In literature" section in biographies

edit

I note that many wiki pages about people have a section listing where their name appears in other literature.

I recalled the line in the novelty poem/song Abdul Abulbul Amir "He could imitate Irving..." which is a reference to Henry Irving. There must be other references like this.

'Memorial'

edit

The stone depicted in the picture captioned as being a "memorial" to him in Brixton, appears on closer inspection to be a foundation stone, possibly of a theatre (with names of proprietors and managers given). It was laid well within his lifetime in 1894, eleven years before his death, so cannot have been intended as a memorial. Does the picture appear in other articles?Cloptonson (talk) 13:47, 15 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

"idiosyncratic style"

No explanation or evidence of this is given. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.183.23.79 (talk) 17:06, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Title character of "Dracula"?

edit

"Irving is thought to have been the inspiration for the title character in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula." Isn't Count Dracula the title character? What aspects of Henry Irving made him the inspiration for the character of Dracula? Vlad the Impaler seems a nicer fit. Aboctok (talk) 20:40, 16 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Aboctok: I've added a section to the article explaining the connection. In short, while Vlad the Impaler surely inspired the concept of vampires and an evil, murderous, count; Irving inpired the specific character of Count Dracul, his mannerisms and personality. The connection becomes clearer when you know something of Irving's personality and relationship with his employees, as I hope the added section in the article now communicates. --Xover (talk) 07:42, 18 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Misattributed daughter

edit

Ethel was not his daughter as far as I can tell. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethel_Irving details Joseph Irving as her father, not Henry. 83.52.175.9 (talk) 08:55, 28 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Dear 83.52.175.9;
Thank you very much for your posted message above; it seems you are quite correct, since Sir Henry’s entry at the EB mentions only two sons.[1] I will remove the mention of Ethel Irving from the Infobox.   Done. Thank you once again.
With kind regards;

Is there a reason for the use of a smeary, AI-upscaled image for this article? Claiming that a sloppy 2009 remaster of the 1888 portrait is itself the 1888 portrait is highly disingenuous. 134.50.140.11 (talk) 21:42, 1 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
