RfC - Is the Horn of Africa region the same as Somali Peninsula?

edit

In lead it says “Horn of Africa, also known as Somali Peninsula”, are these two considered to be the same? If not the same Somali Peninsula should be excluded from lead. Leechjoel9 (talk) 08:02, 29 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Not the same The definition of a peninsula is landmass that is surrounded by water. The Horn of Africa region which consist of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia, stretches far into mainland of Africa and are not surrounded by water. Here some sources that distinguishes Somali peninsula from Horn of Africa, and also includes Somali peninsula as a part of of Horn of Africa region:

[1] Makes a distinction between Greater Ethiopia and Somali Peninsula throughout the paper. Somali peninsula covers Somalia, Somaliland and a fifth of Greater Ethiopia.

[2] “The Somali Peninsula is part of the Horn of Africa and is a term used to refer to eastern Ethiopia and Somalia”

[3] “Part of the Horn of Africa region is also known as the Somali peninsula; this term is typically used when referring to lands of Somalia and eastern Ethiopia ..”

[4] “The Somali Peninsula, one of the most culturally homogeneous regions of Africa, was divided into British Somaliland, French Somaliland, Italian Somaliland, Ethiopian Somaliland (the Ogaden region), and what is now Kenya's North-Eastern Province.”

[5] Describes Somali Peninsula as areas that consist of the Somali Plateu and sorrounding areas and not as the whole HOA region.Leechjoel9 (talk) 08:19, 29 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Economy section

edit

The Economy section does not describe the economy enough, not explaining what is grown there, what is traded. The big numbers of the value are supplied. There is a lot about nations unhappy because the national governments are not able to get money from the trade because people do it directly — what is the trade? I think it is mainly agriculture, both crops and animals, but that is me guessing from the few words included and reading about areas with good rainfall in the Geography section. I had hoped to learn more about the economy of this area, and possibly its role as part of the African continent. I hope there are editors who have sources about the economy and can write some plain sentences about it. - - Prairieplant (talk) 01:13, 7 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

I offer one source from 2018, on the economies of 4 nations and opportunities for investment, especially by South Korea. It is by the Africa Development Bank, and found online here. Maybe it will help in describing the economy of the Horn of Africa in more specific terms. - - Prairieplant (talk) 01:37, 7 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Map 2022

edit

The maps currently shown on the page aren't too helpful. On looking through the options available at Commons today, this map (added in 2013) is an obvious candidate for this page.

It shows the countries which are *sometimes* included with the Horm. Twang (talk) 21:51, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

5 countries? Why? Isn't it 4?

edit

According to the source cited by the article (Encyclopedia Britannica), the Horn of Africa is comprised of Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Djibouti.

Why, then, does the article say "5 sovereign states" in the standout box? Isn't this incorrect? (I attempted to edit it to say 4, but the edit was undone as "non-constructive"). 23.121.7.97 (talk) 17:22, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Legendarycool can you please stop adding Puntland on the list of unrecognised countries? Oromia is more of a country than Puntland since Ethiopia a federal state with its capital Addis located IN Oromia. 95.146.177.157 (talk) 16:17, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
First I know how a federal state works and I would count Oromia… if it
  1. Didn’t recognise Ethiopia’s central government
  2. Acted independent from the central government
while Puntland does want to fully reunite with Somalia when it is more stable it in now a ‘unrecognised state’
P.S. despite this disagreement I nonetheless wish you a good day. Legendarycool (talk) 23:25, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
