Pretty good article, but no mention of his work on the philosophy of logic, eg the paper `What is Logic?' JourPhil (1979). 131.111.164.210 10:29, 27 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

What is his status at UC Santa Cruz? Check their faculty page and he's there.

Casimir Lewy

edit

In "Why is there Philosophy of Mathematics" (pp. 259-260) Hacking says

Casimir Lewy is my own role model of a ‘careful analytic philosopher’. For an obituary giving some flavour of his work and character, see Hacking (2006). Wikipedia describes my teacher as ‘Casimir Lewy, a former student of Wittgenstein’s’. That is totally misleading. Yes, Lewy went to many of Wittgenstein’s classes, and Wittgenstein speaks of him in recorded notes, but Lewy’s man was G. E. Moore, of whom he became the literary executor, and from whom he learned to be a ‘careful analytic philosopher’.

So I think our text should reflect the actuality (though it makes Hacking's text false!). · rodii · 19:28, 13 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
