Merger proposal
editI propose that Sock Dennis be merged into this article. Although it has a long history it has a very small population & is part of the Ilchester parish.— Rod talk 17:33, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
- As there were no objections I have now done the merge.— Rod talk 18:04, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Town or village
editIf it was once the county town was it once demoted to the status of Village? 77.98.164.98 (talk) 10:04, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
- Effectively this happened in 1889 - there was a long decline of the town, concluding with the dissolution of its corporation - see my editing to the opening paragraph. Argovian (talk) 18:26, 22 December 2014 (UTC)
Some questions about image captions
editI noticed that "Farm" is capitalized in the caption "Sock Dennis Farm" for the image in Ilchester#Georgian times. I wondered if this were the formal name of the farm, thus deserving the capitalization. If it's just a farm in Sock Dennis, then "Farm" does not need to be capitalized. I saw the phrase "Sock Dennis farm", with "farm" not capitalized, toward the end of the section Ilchester#Medieval times. I clicked on the link and found that "farm" is capitalized in the article title but not in the bit of text to which the link leads. However, I also saw the phrase "Castle Farm" at the end of the large paragraph in Medieval times. So, just wondering.
I also have a question about the caption in the image in Medieval times. It says, "The old market place in Ilchester". I assume that the grassy area was the site of the market, and that it was an outdoor market, but I'm not sure every reader would realize that. In some places, markets are indoors, and a reader might wonder whether the brick building in the background was the location of the market (even though it obviously was built after medieval times). Is there any way to indicate in the caption that the grassy area was the location of the market (if indeed it was)? CorinneSD (talk) 22:36, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

Monty Python Cheese Shop Sketch
editI think the fact that Ilchester is mentioned in Monty Python's Cheese Shop sketch deserves a mention, no? "It's quite staggeringly popular in the manor, squire." Johnalexwood (talk) 18:19, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
