Can Waldir support the claim that Jintang is the closest island to China's continental shore? From the map, there are many islands close to the shore.Wai Hong (talk) 08:57, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I guess you're right. I must have misinterpreted the map. The problem is, there's no indication of which islands belong or not to Zhoushan. I'll assume all the islands in the map do. So, what do you think would fit, "from the Zhoushan islands, it is one of the closest to the shore"? or perhaps "it is located 3,300m off the continental shore"? In any case, mapclip can give you approximate measures with the Distance tool, though not exact, evidently. Btw, do you know of any free map source we could use to make an map of Zhoushan highlighting Jintang? Thanks, Waldir talk 12:46, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Jintang Bridge

edit

Hey there Wildir. I went through the article you sent me. It's basically a geographical analysis and report on the sendimentation and sea ebbs surrounding the Jin Tang Canal. Since it's not really relevant to your question and has too many technicalities I shan't dwell on that. (Perhaps a more able person at geographical jargon can explain in detail)

However I did a search in google and came up with this article on an accident involving the Jintang Bridge.

In April 2004 construction began on the Jintang Bridge. The complete construction of the bridge will bring much convenience to the people of Zhou Shan as the mode of transport to Jintang will no longer be by boat anymore.

The accident happened on the previous day 27th March 2008, involving a Taiwan freighter that hit the bridge construction site. 2 pieces of reinforced concrete from the bridge weighing 3000 tons each got stuck in the freighter's cockpit. Of the 18 passengers on the ship, 14 had been saved while 4 remained missing as of at that moment on the 28th March.

Before the incident, the authorities had issued warnings to passing ships to watch out for the construction site, however it is noted that within 500 miles of the bridge, there were no light signals. The main factor that contributed to the accident was that the bridge pillar that was knocked had been a temporary fixture and had not been properly connected to the main bridge structure yet. Additionally, the large freighter was moving at a fast pace.

As of the time of writing the article, authorities are quoted as saying that cannot accurately determine the extent of the damage to the bridge but are sure the accident will result in further delay to the completion of its construction.

It's my belief that the "roads" you saw on the two maps you posted was a representation of the future bridge link between JinTang island and Zhou Shan. Mineowyn (talk) 15:31, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

^Note: I made a mistake with the dates April 2006 and the area of the origin of the freighter which is from Taizhou, Zhejiang which has been changed. Additionally, do have a look at the 2 hidden comments I've placed in the main article: one on linkage and the other on geography. I actually have 2 parts of the article linking to same reference url link but I'm not very familiar with linkaging. Mineowyn (talk) 03:25, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Transportation

edit

The construction of 6 runways in Chengdu in jintang is not referring to Jintang Island but Jintang County. (not to be confused) But that article could be a good addition to the Chengdu wikipage. Mineowyn (talk) 01:43, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for all your help. I did what I could to improve the article with the info you provided me, but the expansion you just made is fantastic! good work :) I believe there is not much more I can do for this article. I'll now let it grow and keep watching it to look for vandalism. Long life to the wiki way! Waldir talk 17:42, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Cheers Wildir~! ;) Actually we're still scratching only the surface. I think there are many more articles with better information for Jintang. But I think we need a geologian to expand on the geographical and map aspects for the page. How is your progress on the map btw? - Mineowyn (talk) 06:20, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh I kinda forgot about that after having found the image the article currently has; I generated a locator map from OpenStreetMap, I'm going to add it to the article. --Waldir talk 12:55, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
The map is in svg, which means it is editable. Perhaps it would be good to modify it to include labels with the names of the islands on it. If you want to give it a shot, try inkscape. --Waldir talk 12:19, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
