Census

edit

Surely that 52,000 figure is for Kidderminster only, not for all three towns? Bewdley and Stourport add up to over 20,000 by themselves, and Kidderminster alone doesn't have only 30,000 people. Loganberry 13:20, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I've now changed that 52,000 to the 2001 Census figure for Kidderminster only. Loganberry 11:23, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I removed Jake Brown and Mattias Tamar-Gill from the list of people born in Kiddy, since Google doesn't show any sign of knowing about them. I think that makes them insignificant in Wikipedia terms. Loganberry 03:22, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

What is the origin of the town's name? According to one webpage the Domesday name was "Chideminster", and a book I have says this comes from "Cydela", but who was he/she?

I've always thought it was previously known as 'Chiderminster' and meant something along the lines of 'children of the minster'. The OED has a 'chider' as being an obsolete term for a 'quarrelsome person' dated from 1377. However, I found a source that says it 'was known to the Saxons as Chiderminster., from three words signifying "a hill, " "water, " and "a church."'[1].

Clent Hills

edit

The hills are at least 12km from the town and I have never really heard of them having fantastic views of the town, they are better placed for Bromsgrove and Stourbridge.

This needs deleting but when I did so before, was berated for 'vandalizing'. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.151.40.2 (talkcontribs)

Restructuring of the article

edit

The reference to the hills seems to have gone now. To be honest the article needs quite a bit of cleaning up - more sections, removal of a little POV, that sort of thing. I'll have a go at some point if nobody else does, but for now I've stuck a {{cleanup}} tag on the top. Loganberry (Talk) 14:26, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree with you and have made a start using Birmingham as a model and moving the existing sentences without alteration into some of the new sectional headings. Clearly there is a lot more to be done in terms of new sectional headings and then the paragraphs themselves to be tidyied-up. I hope that meets with general approval - well at least in principle. DonBarton 10:17, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

That looks much tidier, yes; thank you. I've changed one small thing (the Harriers subheading) because that way it shows up in the table of contents in a way that simple boldface doesn't, but other than that I think it's a very good base for future expansion. Loganberry (Talk) 12:28, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I think we're now in some danger of slipping back into the mass of information we had before; the "Economy" section is a good illustration of this. It's a fairly disjointed read now - do readers really need to know the exact location of every supermarket? - so might benefit from some paring down. Population discrepancy

edit

Where does the 55,438 figure in the Infobox come from? The 2001 census recorded 55,182, as mentioned in the lead. 81.158.0.135 16:11, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Kiddy or Kiddie?

edit

An anon editor changed the opening paragraph to say that the town was affectionately known as "Kiddie" rather than "Kiddy". While both abbreviations are used (compare [2] with [3], both from BBC Sport), I'm pretty sure that the Y spelling is the more common by some distance, and Google backs me up. For example, "Kiddie Harriers" gets 67 hits, but "Kiddy Harriers" gets 554. From personal experience, the Y spelling is definitely more common in the Kidderminster area itself. I've therefore reverted, and the Y spelling should be kept unless there is some evidence that the IE spelling is the more common. Loganberry (Talk) 22:34, 13 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

{{refimprove}} tag

edit

We definitely need better references in this article, in particular inline citations. For example, we have no citation about the Summerfield plant, about Jon Turley's Kidderminster residence (his WP article mentions the town, but we need a reference in this article, not just that one) or about Slingfield Mill being listed. The "Food & drink" section is entirely unreferenced. There are also some POV issues: not the worst of their type perhaps, but things like "The SEALINE yacht company manufactures fine, high quality boats for the luxury market" and "Victoria Carpets plc which is the manufacturing base in the UK for high quality carpet" are clear examples of POV and need attention. Climate Chart

edit

The climate averages are incorrect. I do not mean to be picky but for the sake of accuracy.... Check other sources. Donkfest1 (talk) 19:40, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Could you expand on that a bit, please? If you don't specify which other sources then we can't check! At the moment we have a source, and as I'm sure you appreciate we can't change the data simply on the say-so of a Talk page comment. If you could suggest another suitable source, that would be great. Loganberry (Talk) 23:15, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
Fair point - I can't find the one I saw on the net previously. The best source for averages is the Met Office site which does not cover Kiddy. I checked one town close by and they were nearly the same as those stated in the article. My apologies for interfering. Donkfest1 (talk) 19:19, 9 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
(I've indented your post for clarity.) No need to apologise; it's just the sort of thing people can easily miss. I live quite near Kiddy, and the numbers seem okay, though I'm not familiar with the source used and didn't add the chart myself. If a Met Office one did exist, though, I think it would probably trump the one we've got. Loganberry (Talk) 03:25, 10 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

This article may still be in need of a significant cleanup. See the proposal for a Worcestershire Wikiproject in order to enlist help. --Kudpung (talk) 18:20, 29 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Music and the Market Tavern

edit

Kidderminster has been the home of a large number of popular musicians, and the Market Tavern is notable as key venue for a large number of rock, indie and blues acts to establish themselves. Should the article have a section specifically devoted to this? It could take a reasonable amount of content out of the Famous Residents section (which is getting too long anyway). Will need sources to establish the notability of the Market Tavern; I can find plenty of individual references in band tour dates, but finding a source which brings this evidence all together may be more difficult. Andrew Oakley (talk) 11:23, 25 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Now that was a lot of years ago - I'd forgotten about the Market Tavern. Happy days.
Most towns have a 'Culture' section. I think you could make 'Dramatics' a subsection of that, and add a 'Music' section, or something similar. Yes, referencing is going to be a nightmare. After a bit of Googling (which reads like a back copy of NME), I see the Tavern has closed (bummer), so maybe there's a newspaper piece out there saying how good it was? Otherwise, add a smallish number of big names, ideally spanning a few years, to give the general picture. I did notice the large number of musicians in the Notable People list - it would be good to move them and explain why so many are centred on Kiddy.
Found one - here, from the BBC. If you can get hold of the book (local library?), that should do the trick. I'm so good to you ;-) GyroMagician (talk) 21:33, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I was the landlord of the market tavern at that time!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.222.123.15 (talk) 18:21, 11 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Ukawsaw Gronniosaw

edit

"Ukawsaw Gronniosaw, known also as James Albert, lived with his family in the town in the 1760s and 1770." Should that be "1770s"? It seems to me it should, or maybe "early 1770s", but the current phrasing is odd.Modal Jig (talk) 14:55, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

This sounds like fun. I won't be able to attend, but I've reposted on the WP:WORCS talk page to try to drum-up some more volunteers. Good luck! GyroMagician (talk) 10:22, 3 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Improvement

edit

Although identified as a problem in 2009, this article remains in need of serious attention. Whole sections are unsourced - "Transport/Education/Sport"; where there are references, they are few in number; the prose is POV and unencyclopedic and there is a huge section on "Notable People", often a bad sign. Have made a start by the removal of some very unsourced POV / original "research". KJP1 (talk) 17:41, 3 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

G-13114 - while the new image is certainly prettier, I'm not sure I'd agree that it's "better". It would be quite a nice image for the church but it doesn't show/tell me much about the town. KJP1 (talk) 07:44, 17 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

It's in the town isn't it? It's comparable to the lead images used in the Worcester and Reddich articles. G-13114 (talk) 14:39, 17 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
If you look at Worcester, or Malvern or Bewdley, you get a sense of the urban setting. With this, and Reddich you don’t. KJP1 (talk) 15:33, 17 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Ok, how about this then? It's of the town centre and arguably less random than the previous image. G-13114 (talk) 16:37, 17 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Much better. Many thanks for your consideration. KJP1 (talk) 18:04, 17 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
