editYour statement "Most typewriters of the era featured vertical apostrophes, rather than angled or curved ones". should acknowledge that no typewriters ever used 2 symbols for opening and closing quotes. This is due to the inability of the typewriter to have the intelligence to separate opening from closing quotes. This is a simple matter for computers.
