Singer and band not synonymous

edit

Elly Jackson is only half of La Roux. It's a "synth duo" - the other half is her production partner Ben Langmaid. That's according to the BBC's Sound of 2009 feature that the article references. Estesark (talk) 20:41, 8 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I was about to say the same thing. The article presents her as a solo artist, which wouldn't appear to be true. StevenEdmondson (talk) 01:40, 18 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I've just made a few quick changes to address this issue. Should suffice for the time being StevenEdmondson (talk) 01:45, 18 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Translation

"La Roux" is not French for "The Red-Haired One". That would be "Le Roux" (for a man) or "La Rousse" for the woman. See "roux" in the French and English Wiktionaries. — 217.46.147.13 (talk) 16:24, 29 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

It's a play on words. Is that not obvious? Also, just because it's gramatically incorrect does not invalidate it's meaining. "They is here" means exactly the same thing as "They are here". The difference is that one is gramatically correct, the other isn't. - EstoyAquí(tce) 16:41, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, a play on words. A play on words to imply what exactly?
The only thing I can think of is the homophonous La Roue (The Wheel), a French silent movie of the 20s which features a double unrequited incestuous love-triangle, as well as a male character called Elie.
But that, I concede, might be a bit recondite.

Haha funny! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.145.176.241 (talk) 15:12, 3 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think its supposed to be a play on the fact that she has a slighly androgenous appearence hence "La Roux" taking both the female and male counterparts of the correct french for red haired woman - in fact it's saying red haired woman or is it a man? Djbrewer

I agree - i think it's an expression of the Non-Specific Gender that is La Roux

... and "le roux" means "fried salty flour".
Maybe none of the band spoke any French but needed a pretntious bandname? We really need some sources. Maikel (talk) 08:52, 10 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Why is it pretentious ? because it's french ? There is nothing pretentious in french language or french words!!it's a language like others!!!signé moi-même 86.66.146.234 (talk) 20:43, 23 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
No, pretentious because it's *pseudo*-French. Obvious, n'est pas?

Do you actually have to tell people that la is a French article? Any moron should figure that out, even if the name is grammatically incorrect.

Thanks for that, I've added what she sais, and removed all the stuff about what it "might" mean- that's irrelevant. Rodhullandemu 16:30, 28 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Quicksand peek

edit

Quicksand peek in canda and HSS. any source? i haven't found any saource to confirm that --SveroH (talk) 19:07, 21 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I haven't had any trouble finding Quicksand on Youtube. BTW, my impression is that Jackson's voice is thin and perhaps limited to only one octave. Sussmanbern (talk) 20:29, 18 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ben Langmaid

edit

What evidence do we have that Ben Langmaid is no longer part of La Roux? --217.43.211.210 (talk) 22:03, 12 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Pronouns

edit

Hey everyone, in Elly's recent interviews, they have said that they no longer identify as male or female. Should we change all the female pronouns in the article to "they"? see: http://www.starpulse.com/news/index.php/2010/02/09/la_roux_s_elly_jackson_i_don_t_have_a_se I'm working now to see if they've actually stated their preferred pronouns anywhere. 2601:6:5280:815:F079:73F8:ADBE:D9A8 (talk) 19:35, 28 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

For a start, we'd need a better source than starpulse.com, I'd think: "Independent writers and aspiring journalists can submit articles for inclusion on Starpulse.com". [1] Not the sort of evidence for editorial control and reputation we'd need for sourcing such matters. There is also the issue that Jackson is apparently talking about sexuality, rather than gender, or at least not making the distinction clear. And finally, Jackson states "Of course, I can appreciate other women" - "other" implying a self-identification as female. On this basis, I'd have to suggest that we leave the article as it is for now, and await better sourcing and clarification if it comes. AndyTheGrump (talk) 19:48, 28 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
And incidentally, this discussion should probably be taking place at Talk:Elly Jackson, not here. AndyTheGrump (talk) 22:20, 4 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Organizing information after split

edit

After Elly and Ben split, it seems like Elly is now officially considered a solo artist simply using the name La Roux. As of this current version, the article for La Roux goes back and forth calling it a duo, then a defunct duo, and then an ongoing solo act, and then Elly has her standpoint article which only adds to the likely confusion. To remedy this issue, I suggest that this article be "ended" when it reaches the point where Ben leaves the duo, which would make this page defunct since they have split. On Elly's page, her earlier career as part of this duo can be referenced on her article and described in greater detail here, and then when it gets to the point where Ben leaves the duo, her article can pick back up and describe the transition of La Roux as a solo act. Unless something changes as her career continues, later projects can be added to Elly's page and Elly herself can be noted for recording as La Roux. Any thoughts on this potential arrangement? WikiRedactor (talk) 20:49, 20 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Personally I would say that as Jackson is continuing to record under the name La Roux, anything related to music releases should continue under the article La Roux, and the Elly Jackson article should continue solely as a biography. There must be several other examples where a band has ended up effectively being a solo outfit but continuing under the same name as the band (Matt Johnson/The The, Peter Cunnah/D:Ream) and I should imagine that unless Jackson starts releasing records under the name "Elly Jackson" rather than "La Roux", the same should apply here. Richard3120 (talk) 21:18, 20 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
I would keep her musicial career under the article "La Roux" since that's what she's going by. It's basically an odd version of a band that changes line-up. The editors should just make sure that there is internal consistancy that matches the chronology of the "group."

Broken Band URL?

edit

It looks like the web site, laroux.co.uk, is now a parking domain. Probably it should be removed from this Wikipedia page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:A44F:3999:1:790E:EFB9:3750:7D57 (talk) 11:20, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Default sort

edit

Any reason why it is sorted by "La Roux" and not "Roux, La"? I suggest that "La" (which means "the") should be moved to the end of the sort key. --Jameboy (talk) 20:18, 6 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
