"In 1893"
editUnder the career section, it's not totally clear where this information is exactly coming from or what it's supposed to mean. First off, it's not included in the source given, which says that she held the position but doesn't put a date on it. Second, once it's clear where the date comes from, does it mean at least as of 1893 she held this position because we don't know definite start and end dates
? Or is this itself supposed to represent the start date? TimothyJosephWood 14:40, 31 July 2017 (UTC)
Ornithologist?
editWhile the article has categorized Ernst as an ornithologist, this is not accurate and should be removed from the category listing.
Ernst was an elected (that is, approved) as an associate member of the AOU. However, in that era it was not necessary to be an ornithologist in order to be a member. At the time, one really only needed to pay the $3 annual dues in order to be considered for membership. As a member, her obituary was then published in The Auk along with other members such as the entry following Ernst (Pompeo Margherita Maresi) who were clearly more amateur enthusiasts than those actually conducting scientific studies of birds as ornithologists.
Ernst also served as the director of the St. Louis Bird Club. This position does not necessarily mean she was an ornithologist, only that that she was elected as the club president, undoubtedly due to a combination of determination, leadership ability, and love of natural history.
A Google search does return one contemporary reference to Ernst as "the fine ornithologist", but this does not appear to be anything more than a mark of admiration, rather than to be taken as literally factual.
Ernst is not known to have published any scientific writings, or even informal bird journals of observations. Nor was she employed as a researcher with any ornithological collection. From the sources provided, she appears to have been a fascinating individual who was a pioneer in the field of education, but alas, no ornithologist. Unless sources to prove otherwise can be found, this category listing should now be removed. Loopy30 (talk) 14:46, 23 December 2017 (UTC)
- No further supporting sources found, "ornithologist" categorization removed. Loopy30 (talk) 12:54, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
