Baseball
editHas Rockhurst won or played for a championship in baseball? I remember something about second place in 2004. I'm going to post that for now, and see what kind of responses it gets. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by AgBrick (talk • contribs) 02:24, 6 December 2006 (UTC).
Editing
editIf a person feels inclined to modify, or completely alter the structure as a whole, then he/she should check the "credibility" of the person who originally made the installment.
On a personal note, I should add that I am not as competent and versed as many others in the way of operating this website, or the internet all together. However, I have an objective to help make this website as good as it should be. -AgBrick
Athletic Section
editPhotographs and more
editThis page is beginning to look really good. Does anyone live around Rockhurst that could take some pictures, indoors and outdoors? Also, should we consider reorganizing the championship sections since there's so much information there now? And lastly, anybody have some old pics? Pat 22:37, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
Football Section Needs Massive Clean-up
editTo comport with Wikipedia's standards, the football section (which, along with "Soccer", I just separated from the general "Athletics" section) needs to be cleaned up in a big, big way. The short list of problems:
1. The section seems very sympathetic to the football team rather than objective and fact-oriented. This is likely a result of the shortage of information the original author had at his/her disposal about the history of the program, perhaps in part because of how young the author may be (it appears the section may have been written by a member of one of the 1998-2005 teams.... For example, in paragraph three of "Football": "It is widely believed that had (the 1998 team) won, they would have also won in the finals against Riverview Gardens, as the Hawklets were loaded with talent (perhaps the best team never to win state at Rockhurst)." This subjectivity and speculation is repeated throughout the section.
2. The scope of the football section is too limited, and the amount of detail being given to the 1998-present teams -- given the long history of the program -- is undue. Of the school's seven state championships, only two occurred after 1998, and though it is good to have lots of information about teams, the section should be pared down and, additionally, more detail needs to be paid to teams in prior decades. The section needs to be evened out. If there is lots of info out there to be added to this section, great, but quite frankly it should be made into its own article in that case (perhaps "Rockhurst High School Athletics" or more narrowly "Rockhurst High School Football").
3. Lastly, and related to 2., the amount of space given to the football program is inordinate when the article is looked at overall, especially for an article about a secondary school. Currently, the football section of Rockhurst High School is longer than its non-football section, including its academics and institutional history. In addition, the Rockhurst High School football section is even longer than the entire Athletics section of Notre Dame, which of course includes its football program. Something is very wrong with that. Worth noting is that Notre Dame's football team has its own article, and when there's enough meaningful info on the Rockhurst program, that alternative should be considered by the article's contributors. In the meantime, the section just needs to get cut down and its original content (minus the subjective portions) moved to a new article when more history about the program is known.
The detail about the football program is great to an extent, but it's inordinately biased and takes away from the focus of the article itself, that being the institution. Anybody interested in revising this?
small other point from other reviewer: i attended rockhurst a few years ago, and unless things have changed in pretty dramatic fashion, the average class size is certainly not 12 students. in fact, given the student teacher ratio of 12 to 1, every teacher would have to be teaching at all times, which clearly isn't true. and since teachers probably teach about 4 classes a day (if memory serves), the class size should be more like 21, which seems more likely to me. to emphasize the guestimate nature of this, i'll insert ~20 (sorry, i'm new to this, i hope that seems like a reasonable way to deal with things. no, its not verifiable, but it beats the hell out of 12).
Another point: somebody edited in humorous but untrue comments about several Rockhurst teachers; I took the liberty to remove them but if somebody did it once it will probably be done again.
Points from another editor: I have added many people to the notable alumni section. I also have added athletic championships beyond first place. My additions are not meant to be final. I hope that others can improve upon my ideas. -AgBrick
Alumni links
editA lot of the alumni links had previously directed to completely different people. I did some fixing, but now there's a lot of red names listed. It might be wise to do some trimming. Fair use rationale for Image:RockhurstHSHawkletlogo.jpg
editImage:RockhurstHSHawkletlogo.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
William Chrisman or Columbia Hickman?
editIn the 'Football' section under 'Program Specific Accomplishments', it states that Rockhurst played its first football championship at William Chrisman High School. However, the article previously stated that they played at Columbia Hickman High School. Because no source was cited for this edit and because the edit was made by an anonymous user, I am not sure if this is correct. The Rockhurst High School web page has no information regarding this, and I haven't found any other sources so far. Does anybody know where Rockhurst played the 1971 Football State Championship?
Campus
editArticle calls the campus "suburban". I do not know the correct answer to this. The campus is totally within the city limits of a central city, Kansas City Missouri, but nowhere near the central core. In fact, it is right across the street from a suburb, Leawood, Kansas, but the campus itself is not in a suburb. But I would hard pressed to call the campus central city, but I certainly could call it urban. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.143.34.161 (talk) 00:14, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

Varsity letters section
editAs to tagging this, there's little hope of finding an article on it anywhere. I've toned it down to a concise explanation. I checked all over the web and could not find pictures of students wearing their letters and pins. Jzsj (talk) 07:57, 25 March 2017 (UTC)
- Removing the unsourced tag because you cannot find a source is not appropriate. I've removed the section. It has been unsourced for three years, and per WP:WPSCH/AG#WNTI the material really doesn't belong inthe article. Meters (talk) 03:28, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
Edit warring on Varsity Letters section
editAt the moment, we have an editor who reportedly has a COI who appears to be reverting all attempts at removing the Varsity Letters section. I'd like if this can be addressed without violations of WP:3RR. @Kchawklet: we do need our editors to be willing to communicate with each other rather than just reverting edits without commentary or reasoning. May I please know your reasoning for restoring the section? - Galactic-Radiance (Talk) 17:57, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
- I can look out in the Hallway and see young walking around with their letterman jackets on as I type. Not sure why this keeps getting deleted. I work at RHS and have for the past 20 years. Please restore this item on the page. I have made lots of edits in past and never had any problems. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kchawklet (talk • contribs) 18:11, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Kchawklet: This started with an edit by User:Meters, who removed the information and left an edit summary reading: "This section was challenged three years ago, and it does not belong in the article even if sourced." You've repeatedly reverted without ever once responding to that, just kind of repeating over and over that the text is accurate. Text added here absolutely needs to be true. I believe you've met that standard. You've come up short with regards to several other issues, though.
- The information you're trying to include doesn't help a reader understand anything about the school. See WP:NOTEVERYTHING.
- It's very promotional, and we try not to allow this website to be used for promotion.
- If you work at the school and your goal is to promote it, we have another policy that says that's a no-no.
- And no matter what, six reverts look terrible. You were warned about that and to be honest, the only reason I haven't tried to get both your identities blocked is because you're finally showing a willingness to stop edit warring and discuss. CityOfSilver 18:59, 27 March 2017 (UTC)

The only thing I know that it is a true statement about the letter at RHS. The student are very proud to get them and it is a big honor. Guys wear them around town. So I am not sure why some one would have a problem with a letter in a schools facebook page. Seems silly that you all think it is to promote it as the students around it a very strong prideful item. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kchawklet (talk • contribs) 19:24, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
- See WP:OWN. This is not your school's facebook page. It's not even your school's Wikipedia page. It is Wikipedia's page about your school, and it should only contain material of encyclopaedic interest. See WP:WPSCH/AG#WNTI. There is nothing special about a high school having athletic letters, and I see nothing unusual or notable about the specific details of your school's letter program. If the granting of letters for academic achievement is unusual then that would be worth mentioning briefly, but you would require a reliable source to show that such recognition is unusual. Has anyone written a newspaper article or paper discussing this? Meters (talk) 20:05, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
Does the Kansas City Star count? Wrote one back in the 60's and the 80's. Talked about on how you only get a white R if you a state championship at the school. Tim Kaine the former VP Candidate talk about never getting a letter on Stephen Colbert show. Kchawklet (talk) 20:32, 27 March 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kchawklet (talk • contribs) 20:23, 27 March 2017 (UTC) Kchawklet (talk) 20:32, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
- No. I'm not asking for a source showing that the system exists or that people did or did not get a letter. I'm asking for a reference showing that the system is unusual enough to have received coverage of the system itself.
- Rereading the original version I see that I misremembered what was meant by "academic". Your letter award system is for extracurricular activities in general (athletic and otherwise) and does not include academic course achievements, so I'm even less inclined to believe that this is worth including. Meters (talk) 20:38, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
Students can get a letter Speech and Debate, Robotics club, Chess Club, and many more non-Athletic clubs. But the majority do come from the athletic side. But there is a system for both sides of academic or athletics. You never attended this high school I guess you will never understand what it means to every student in the building. No one messed with this for about 10 years. Just leave it alone and let us RHS people decide what should be on our wikpedia page. Kchawklet (talk) 21:07, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Kchawklet: It may ring of importance to the students in your high school, but it isn't significant in an encyclopedic article because it really doesn't stray from the norm in most schools. I doubt that a section like this would matter to you if it was on an article about any other school.
- As CityOfSilver mentioned above, editors who have a conflict-of-interest are generally advised not to edit on pages that they have the COI on - see WP:COI. It can run the risk of the article being biased or having sections added by the people with the conflict-of-interest that don't represent Wikipedia's best practices. As per Meters's link to WP:OWN, nobody owns an article, your school included, so a member of the school can't add in content that was determined by a Wikipedia editor to not conform to our best practices just because they're a member of the school. If you're confused about these policies, I and others would be happy to clarify, but the content is, unfortunately, not be likely to be restored in its current form. - Galactic-Radiance (Talk) 21:35, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
Article needs trimming
editThere is a significant amount of material (beyond the athletic letters section discussed above) in this article that does not belong in this Wikiarticle. See WP:WPSCHOOLS/AG for the School wikiproject article content guidelines. I'll open the discussions here before making any changes in an attempt to minimize the to and fro edits we saw with the letters issue.
Athletics
editFirst up: The school has an impressive list of State championships, so there is no need to list every second and third place finish. This issue was discussed in a recent RFC Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Schools/Article_guidelines#RfC: Is being a finalist in a major championship notable for school articles?. I suggest replacing the table with a list of sports offered and championships won.
The program specific accomplishments section is just non-encyclopedic football boosterism. No-one but school members cares about trivia such as old win-loss records, various ESPN national rankings, how many titles it has won compared to the winningest schools, or the fact that it has won a championship in each of four major championship venues. The coaches mentioned don't have wikiarticles, and don't seem all that notable. The Knute Rocky Awards would go to showing notability, but are not sourced, and it's not a coaching award. The USA Today Coach of the year award is just a selection by one journalist. Meters (talk) 05:52, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
- Starting work on this now that I've remembered. Meters (talk) 20:46, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
Alumni
editIt's not up to editors to exclude certain alumni based on their opinion that the alumni are not notable enough. In the recent case of Nathan Scheelhaase it does not matter that he never played pro ball. All alumni who are notable enough to have a wikipedia article (Scheelhaase does) and for whom there are reliable source showinging attendance for even for one day (Scheelhaase did) are to be listed. See WP:ALUMNI. Meters (talk) 02:57, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
