Multiple names

edit

Maybe we should follow the Florina and Bitola convention here as well and only refer to the official name (Serres) without even the Greek transliteration?--   Avg    13:36, 29 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

The Greek speeling of Florina was removed by Telex yesterday without giving any reason. In the case of Bitola, there is a section called "Name" where Macedonian and Greek names are explained in more detail. Generally, there has been a constant revert war about Slavic names going on for the last several months with many towns in Greek Macedonia, and no consensus could be reached in this politically very sensitive issue. See also the Danzig/Gdansk dispute.   Andreas   (T) 13:51, 29 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
It was removed, because there is a naming section (which I wrote a few weeks ago). --Telex 13:56, 29 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Amphipolis,SERRES, Central MACEDONIA, GREECE, MAY ALSO BE THE FINAL RESTING PLACE OF THE GREEK KING ALEXANDER THE GREAT. A MASSIVE MARBLE TOMB IS BEING EXCAVATED AS I WRITE THIS..... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.222.249.11 (talk) 01:21, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Serrai redirects here?

edit

I just entered the place name Serrai, which according to Expedia Maps in located in Central Macedonia. Am I to understand according to the redirect, that these are one and the same place? I have some historical information attributed to Serrai that I need to confirm. -- Thanks, Deborahjay 08:00, 6 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Of course it is the same place. All ancient Greek words in feminine plural ending in "ai" end in "es" in Modern Greek. There are a few exceptions for place names like Patra, Athina and Thiva, but Serrai became Serres. Go ahead and add your information.  Andreas   (T) 14:15, 6 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks -- Now that I've overcome my reticence and am oriented towards tackling the Greek, I see the notation as to new and old forms of the name. As for the information (about the fate of Serres Jewry in WWII), it requires further corroboration that will take some time. -- Deborahjay 06:38, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Page moved

edit

I was bold and moved the city to Serres from Serres, Greece. All other items on Serres (disambiguation) are either minute villages or surnames of people of not-so- importance. Plus, there were many links to Serres, intended for the city, which are now automatically fixed. If anyone objects, I don't mind a regular WP:RM. Duja 11:41, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Merge proposal: Kamenikia to here

edit

Classicwiki proposed this. Classicwiki, can you please put your reason(s) here? Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 18:21, 28 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Boleyn, I haven't looked into all the WP's regarding neighborhoods so I can be in the wrong here. But as far as I can tell Serres represents about >1% of the population of Greece. It is a start class article, and has room available in its neighborhood section. Kamenikia is pretty sparse, and even more bare when I nominated the merger. Just didn't seem notable and thorough enough to have its own section. Just my opinion though. Classicwiki (talk) (ping me please) 02:44, 30 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Classicwiki, Boleyn, I am just writing the article about the neighborhood in Bulgarian Wikipedia and I strongly support that it has a separate article - the neighborhood has its own history and is a traditional well-known historical neighborhood mentioned in various reliable sources.--Алиса Селезньова (talk) 13:26, 16 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
