Merge with sexual assault

The articles about sexual violence and sexual assault largely overlap, and I think they should be merged. -- Gabi S. (talk) 19:11, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

They are different topics, as sexual violence is a broader topic and does not automatically equate to sexual assault. As for overlap, like Wikipedia:Content forking#Related articles states, "Articles on distinct but related topics may well contain a significant amount of information in common with one another. They either need to be merged, or have the definition of a sexual violence actually be a form of violence. Right now sexual violence has a looser and more broad definition than sexual assault. Which is backwards. Assault includes threats (as opposed to battery, which is hitting someone). To have violence be the looser term goes against it's defintion. A cat-call could be considered an act of violence under the current definition in the lead. This stems from the dilution and expansion of the definition of violence that is occurring. Once everything is violence, nothing will be. If someone stabs me in the gut, I don't want that in the same category as whistling at someone. 97.122.95.30 (talk) 04:56, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

We go by what the WP:Reliable sources state with WP:Due weight. It's that simple. I get that you want to think of violence as simply physical violence, which I just addressed at the Violence talk page, but the preponderance of reliable sources in whatever field (in this case, the field of sexual violence) trumps personal opinion. This might be a bit silly, but reliable sources for the field of defining basic words would dictionaries

And of course they have different defintions for the word "violence": 1) the use of physical force, injury, intense turbulent or furious and often destructive action or force. 2) undue alteration. 3)swift and intense force. 4) rough or injurious physical force action or treatment. 5) an unjust or unwarranted exertion of force or power as against rights or laws. 6) a violent act or proceeding. 7) rough or immoderate vehemence as of feeling or language. 8) damage through distortion or unwarranted alteration. 9) Extreme force. 10) Action which causes destruction pain or suffering. 11) Widespread fighting. 12)(figuratively) Injustice wrong. 13) behavior involving physical force intended to hurt damage or kill someone or something. 14) Violence is behavior that is intended to hurt injure or kill people. 15) If you do or say something with violence...[literary]. 16) Behaviour involving physical force intended to hurt damage or kill someone or something. 17) Strength of emotion or of a destructive natural force. --- These are the actual authorities on the topic of what is and isn't violence. I get that you want to use Johan Galtung's redefinition where everything is violence. Do review WP:MEDRS and WP:SCHOLARSHIP. Dictionary sources are not the main types of sources we use for medical/health material, or academic topics in general. And violence/sexual violence material is medical/health material, and these two topics are academic topics. Flyer22 Frozen (talk) 02:43, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
