Minor Plot Summary Error

"She says that it's okay, not many guys are interested in her and she knows she is not all that pretty and is sorry, it's a mistake and she will leave." This is a minor point but it sounds as though Sandra says "...there are a lot of guys that um...wanna go out with me" which contradicts the original paragraph; subtitles seem to support that and later in the film her father also points out that she has no shortage of suitors (although this works with either in order to establish his pride in her). This runs with her mentioning earlier in the scene that they "don't have to go out." N3v (talk) 16:54, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Too Much Interpretation in the Plot Summary

It was strange for me, reading this plot summary. It didn't seem to be describing the film I'd just watched. I mean, the film I watched seemed far darker and more bitter. The plot summary goes on about how he, after being finally ditched by Michelle, realises he can build a happy life with Sandra. Does he? There's no dialogue to that effect, and I see no sign of any positive feelings in his actions in the final minutes of the film. His hug with Sandra at the end is 'passionate', is it? I saw it as purely resigned on his part. With Sandra he always seems to be acting out of I-suppose-ought-to/everyone-expects-it-of-me politeness, or at least that's how it struck me. Why doesn't he kill himself at the end? I don't know for sure. But it certainly doesn't have to be for any reason as positive as that he thinks he can lead a happy life with Sandra. Yeah, I agree with most of what unsigned 27 Mar 2020 says. The big arc might be one of a distraught, emotionally eviscerated guy being reoriented to a more vulnerable and open place through romantic interests and disappointments. But the fact that the turning point comes when Leonard looks at the glove Sandra had given him, suggests an epiphany. He had some kind of realization. And why does he cry when he gives Sandra the ring? There is plenty of ambiguity, and we are left asking, "just what are his final motives?". His final, knowing stare into the camera is only emphasis for our questions. His tears and the embrace could be sincere, if muted, love for Sandra. Or it could be he is grieving the loss of Michelle. Then again, it could be he is finally accepting emotional security and stable circumstances after ricocheting from one impulse to another, including suicidal ones, for months or years. Possibly it is some combination of these. But that makes the film a little more interesting. Even if the writers were simply too lazy to make Leonard's motives clear. White Nights

It seems incorrect to claim that this film is loosely based on White Nights. The article cites Dostoevsky as an influence, but not necessarily for this movie. The plot description for White Nights on the linked page doesn't even mention a second lover, so I doubt there's a connection.76.69.85.231 (talk) 14:31, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

I agree. There is very little similar between the movie and the short story. There is no second lover in the Dostoevsky piece, which is about a loner helping a woman reconnect with her lost lover, while coping with the odds of his own feelings and loneliness. Their relationship was never even romantic in the modern sense. Adding the second lover completely changes the nature of the protagonist and storyline. All the characters are completely different. Even a claim of it being "loosely based" is a stretch.
