Incorporation into Leeds

edit

In the 1880s, Wortley became incorporated into the expanding (then) town of Leeds.

According to Pigot's Directory of 1834, Wortley was already part of the Borough of Leeds by this time. This is corroborated by White's History, Gazetteer and Directory of the West Riding of Yorkshire of 1837, which confirms that Wortley was within the borough prior to the Municipal Corporations Act 1835—the borough was extended under that act to include Coldcotes, Osmondthorpe, Skelton and Thornes, which had previously been in the parish of Whitkirk.

The borough was created in 1626, and included the whole of the parish, as described in a second charter issued in 1661: Our most dear father Charles the First, lately King of England of blessed memory, by his letters patent under the Great Seal of England, made bearing the date the thirteenth day of July, in the second year of his reign, of his special grace did ordain, grant, and appoint, the town aforesaid to be a free borough of this his real of England, and that under the name of the borough of Leedes aforesaid the whole parish of Leedes should be comprised...

Wortley therefore appears to have been incorporated into the town of Leeds in 1626, not the 1880s. Skinsmoke (talk) 10:26, 7 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I am concerned that this page only gives details of the Wortley on the outskirts of Leeds, and note should also be made of the Wortley some 4 miles south east of Penistone, Yorkshire

Article needs updates

edit

The imagery on this article is outdated for example the Neto has not been there for years, Phillips should be added to the notable people, the main photo shows a gas container that is no longer there, and there are a number of car showroom garages and that should be included in the article such as Aston Martin. Macro is now Brooker.

The little free libraries in the are should be added to the article as they are an integral part of the community. There are also a number of businesses and offices in the area worthy of note. 62.60.62.114 (talk) 08:57, 29 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Propose to reorganise the article into wortley areas

edit

The article already references that wortley is actually three very distinct areas and communities; New Wortley, Upper Wortley and Lower Wortley.

These areas should be in subsections of the article, with a more expanded overview explain the differences and similarities. Currently the section they are in is very long. 62.60.62.114 (talk) 09:00, 29 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
