Just like its predecessors: Pagii, ZCubes and Homestead Technologies, Wix is a web-based design platform, that enables the creation and publication of rich internet applications like:
websites, social profiles, web widgets, blogs, presentations, intros, banners, comments etc.
Users can create any personal or business user generated content without coding in Adobe Flash/HTML or being constrained by web templates.
At the heart of the product is a Drag & drop WYSIWYG editor that allows users to pull in any content from the web or from their own media files (video, audio, animation, text etc) and create web content.
Background
editThe company was founded in 2006, and has offices in Tel-Aviv and New-York.
Its founders and CEOs are Avishai Avrahami, Nadav Avrahami and Giora Kaplan, which have all served in the Israeli army intelligence, and have since worked in start-up companys and hi-tech companies.
They were joined by co-CEO Allon Bloch, who has worked as a consultant for McKinsey & co, and was a partner in ‘Jerusalem venture partners’ where he managed venture capital investments for many start-ups in the internet media sector.
The main investors in the company are Bessemer Venture Partners and the "Mangrove venture capital" firms.
During 2008, Wix was chosen for promotional campaigns and MySpace contests by Universal Studios and the Hearst Corporation.
In July 2008, Wix was picked as the most promising web 2.0 Israeli start-up in the TWS conference. [1]
Features
editThe Wix web application is compatible for all the main web browsers like: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera, and It is used by many PC and MAC users from the professional and private sectors alike.
The platform enables the use of Hypermedia parts like: audio, text, video, vector drawings, pictures, photos, etc. and integrates them all into one seamless design based on flash.
Compared to other desktop publishing services based on Adobe Flash, the unique aspect of Wix is that it is fully Search engine optimization compatible. Every creation in Wix has an HTML mirror that enables it to be detected and ranked high in search engine sites like Google, yahoo, Aol etc.
Users can choose & use readymade layouts, customize them according to their needs, or create new ones from scratch.
Like in any web 2.0 rich internet application, users can add special effects, animations, links, web feeds, HTML behaviors and more to any object or website design that is worked upon.
