Query about Women in Red's bot

edit

Dear Ipigott, Happy New Year to you! I am uncertain if you might recall our brief conversation when you welcomed me to the Women in Red project back in August. I have been busy these past few months, but I have decided to participate a bit more actively on this WikiProject as well as over at Requested Articles.

My query to you was: I often see that the lists for the Missing Articles are not updated by the bot allotted to the task (several blue links are among the lists), may I ask why this is the case? I tried to manually update the list by clicking the button for Listeriabot, but it did not work. I hope to turn quite a few red links into blue over the next few days and merely wanted this query answered.

I hope you are well and had a wonderful start to 2022. Kindest regards, Spinster300 (talk) 07:45, 4 January 2022 (UTC).

Spinster300: Happy New Year to you too. Good to see you now intend to participate more actively in Women in Red. We are aware of these problems with Listeriabot which are a result of decisions not to allocate sufficient resources to the updating process. The blue links are usually to be found in the longer lists which require more computer time. Most of our more recent additions are shorter or have less columns and are usually updated automatically. We've kept some of the longer ones as many of us find them useful despite the updating problem. Please let me know if you run into any other problems.--Ipigott (talk) 07:53, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
Dear Ipigott, thank you very kindly for this clarification. I will move forward with my article creations, regardless of the bot not working. I am so excited for this project! I hope my contributions lead to many wonderful, exciting and interesting articles. Thank you for reviewing my latest two articles, you are so very kind. Regards, Spinster300 (talk) 08:26, 4 January 2022 (UTC).

Delisting of J. K. Rowling as FA

edit

As J. K. Rowling was about to be delisted as FA, I asked for a bit more time to work on improvements. Thanks to Z1720 we have now been granted another week or so to add a section on literary analysis. I'll start putting something together in my user space as soon as time permits, probably tomorrow. Anyone with suitable experience interested in helping me along should let me know here. I'll then be able to keep you posted on progress.--Ipigott (talk) 17:00, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

For those interested, work has started directly on the J. K. Rowling page. See more details on Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Women_in_Red#J._K._Rowling_delisting_as_FA.--Ipigott (talk) 10:28, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the invite

edit

Hello! Thank you for reviewing some of the pages I recently created and for inviting me to join the Women in Red project. I'm interested in participating in Women in Red, but when I filled out the form to do so and clicked the "join" button, nothing happened. I tried again, and it was the same situation--I wasn't redirected anywhere and the dialog box wouldn't close until I finally exed out rather than fruitlessly clicking "join" once more. I just want to let you know that even if I don't figure out a way around whatever error is barring me from joining the project, I do intend to continue creating pages dedicated to overlooked North American women poets and to notable women poets and fiction writers of South America who don't yet have entries on English Wikipedia. Thanks for encouraging me along, and best of luck progressing toward the endgoals of Women in Red.--Carscrumper (talk) 09:46, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for telling me about this problem, Carscrumper. I don't know why the Join button doesn't work on your talk page but will look into it. You'll see the original of the January invitation at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red/Outreach/2022 where the button works for me or you can go to the mains wp:Women in Red page and use the box at the top. Please let me know if this works or if you encounter further problems.--Ipigott (talk) 10:41, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks again! The Join button worked from the original version of the January invitation at the Outreach page you linked me to. I'm now officially in!--Carscrumper (talk) 12:33, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

What do you suggest I do from here ? What would be your next move --Susanne413113* (talk) 16:06, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, Susanne413113, and welcome to Wikipedia. On your talk page, you'll find some suggestions about how to gain experience in editing. You might be interested in participating in The Wikipedia Adventure, an easy way to make a start.--Ipigott (talk) 16:15, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

Irina Fedotova

edit

Hi, thanks for reviewing this article, and updating its talk page. Are you also able to remove the "Reviewer" tag from the Irina Fedotova (model) article main page too? --Death Star Central (talk) 10:46, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

I just realized I could do it myself too. Sorry for the bother, still relatively new to the features here. --Death Star Central (talk) 10:58, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
Death Star Central: You'll see I have reintroduced a number of additional changes. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you run into further problems. As you have written a number of women's biographies you might like to become a member of Women in Red. You can do so in the box at the top of the main project page. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 11:19, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
Ipigott Thank you, for help and advice. Greatly appreciated. --Death Star Central (talk) 04:51, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

in friendship

Thank you for being around, especially for the women in red! - Happy new year, in friendship! - One of my pics was on the Main page (DYK) and even made the stats. - In this young year, I enjoyed meetings with friends in real life, and wish you many of those. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:31, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

All the best to you too Gerda. Good to see you were together with the Three Kings yesterday. Beautiful pictures. Always nice to hear from you. You might not believe it but I have never met any Wikipedia editors in real life. But now that everything is getting more and more virtual, the chances of meeting any are being reduced by the day.... Maybe in 2023?--Ipigott (talk) 15:40, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
I met 2 (no more, a German and an American) and I enjoy regularly email chat with a one-digit number, - suspicions of my network as expressed in the Sibelius discussion are greatly exaggerated ;) - All the best --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:03, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt: Well as far as I can see from your recent messages, your network consists of no less than 48 primary contacts. I must say I'm proud to be among them! Then there's your "Precious" index -- and perhaps much more! Anyway it's good to know that someone's holding everything together.--Ipigott (talk) 16:36, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
Yes, and great, and appreciated, only I dislike the idea of me and my flashmob "forcing" infoboxes in articles that's still in some heads, although I never had one. I have observed the scene, and - yes - I made a list of where infoboxes where reverted. That was deleted as an attack page, DYK? In the new year, we can do better. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:41, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, I have never seen you suggest nor request infoboxes be added to any article by your "flashmob". Perhaps before I came along? I've said it before and I will repeat it again, I believe you are one of the most civil and kind editors I have had the good fortune of meeting here. --ARoseWolf 16:46, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
Good to see you are still contributing, ARoseWolf. Happy New Year! Hope the conditions are not too rough up there in Alaska.--Ipigott (talk) 16:50, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
Define contributing. I'm trying. I want to finish a couple of drafts I started for State Parks here in Alaska and there are a few more red links. I completed about a hundred or so redirects for Tribal entities in Alaska (Thank you @Rosguill wherever you are for your patient reviews of them) before I had to take a two week trail run. I want to eventually circle back and create some articles for these tribes so the redirects can go away. My crown jewel will be a collaboration with Susun in the Spring though. I want to soak in as much about her amazing research skills as I can. Writing has never been an issue for me. It comes to me so naturally. Being able to properly research and find those nuggets of information has been a challenge. Happy New Year to you as well, Ian! The conditions here are marginal at best. We've had some of our coldest actual temps so far (-48°f) this winter. The snowfall hasn't been as excessive as years past and I probably just jinxed that. --ARoseWolf 17:03, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
(ec) I said I never had a flashmob. In former times (2015), I had to request infoboxes on the article talk per my restrictions, for a probation time of six months. All requested infoboxes - mostly operas - where installed. When restrictions were rescinded, I added them myself. I don't need others for things I can do myself, really. Still, just check out why WP:QAI/Infobox has no talk page, in case of interest (but I think it's a waste of time, - Sibelius went well, and mercifully short). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:08, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
Of course you don't need nor have you ever had a "flashmob". I was being extremely facetious. I have probably read most every discussion concerning infoboxes and the issues of the past and thoroughly read through the edit histories of almost everyone I have interacted with here at some point. Notwithstanding the beautiful people you have put me in contact with that are no longer with us. How better to connect with the people I admire? --ARoseWolf 17:19, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
It's great to have such wonderful wikifriends discussing matters on my page but it's funny this has turned to infoboxes again (I've never been strongly for or against). But on a more positive note, ARoseWolf, I would just like to let you know that I've been contributing a bit more to June Preston and I think we are nearing the point at which it no longer risks deletion.--Ipigott (talk) 19:04, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
Great news! I've been following the progress. It might not be what Sabrina wanted, we as children of our parents tend to have somewhat of a skewed opinion or view of our parents, but it is a win for the encyclopedia when we can retain and improve articles. In my eyes my Papa was larger than life, kind but firm and the most amazing man that has ever lived. I understand the love of a daughter. I am quite sure many of the attributes I could offer for him are true but I am sure a portion of himself was hidden from us. --ARoseWolf 19:16, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

in case of interest, yesterday's snow and today's music in memory of Jerome Kohl --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:46, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

2022 began happily with vacation. I uploaded images but stopped at 22 January - click on songs. 30 January means 10 years of Precious. It's also the birthday of a friend, - I'm so happy I mentioned his DYK on his 90th birthday when he was still alive. I have a great singer on DYK whom I heard, Elena Guseva, and wait for a Recent death appearance of Georg Christoph Biller whom I saw in action. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:38, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

Gerda Arendt: Has Precious really been running for 10 years? Amazing how time flies but it's also an amazing idea, especially as you keep reminding us all of when we were first included. It must be one of the most inspiring initiatives on Wikipedia. Elena Guseva looks good. From the photo, we can almost hear her powerful voice.--Ipigott (talk) 06:36, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
Precious: it wasn't my idea, - I remember being honoured by "my day" in 2010, by Rlevse who had also inherited the idea (see history). He left, and returned as PumpkinSky, and we did things together, such as Yogo sapphire. I had the idea of contiuing the award, and gave the first to Rosie, but it was not yet called Precious, just Award. When PumpkinSky was blocked (because others also noticed that he was Rlevse), I gave him Precious with that word in the header, still not in the header, - from "my" start it was often an expression of protest ;) - He was unblocked, and we wrote Kafka together, the so far most successful TFA in terms of views. Beginning with the next, Precious was the header, in barnstar format. - I wish the photo had been there in the nomination, but better late than never, and fingers crossed that it can stay free. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:16, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

Anna Féresse-Deraismes

edit

Hi Ian, If and when you have time/inclination would you please check my translation of Anna Féresse-Deraismes from fr:Anna Féresse-Deraismes? Thanks! --Rosiestep (talk) 21:52, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

Rosiestep: Pretty good translation. Just a few minor improvements. I don't know how well Voltairian is understood in English. For clarity, you could say "Her father was a religious skeptic, following in the footsteps of Voltaire." But perhaps my wikilink on Voltairian is sufficient.--Ipigott (talk) 07:37, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
Oh, Ian... I am most appreciative of each edit you made, and I reviewed each quite carefully for my own understanding. Though I studied French for four years in school days, I have little opportunity to use it aside from travel. I should probably put more effort into FR→EN translations on wiki. Again, thank you. --Rosiestep (talk) 12:54, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
If/When you have the inclination (please don't feel obligated to do so), here are other translations that would benefit from review: Stella Blandy/fr:Stella Blandy and Clotilde Dissard/fr:Clotilde Dissard. Thank you. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:16, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
Rosiestep: I've checked through both of these although your own translations were not too bad. As you know, I write many articles on women from around the world but I prefer to look directly for pertinent sources myself and create new articles from scratch, even if biographies exist in other language versions. I find this usually provides better results than word-for-word translations. Nevertheless, it's been an interesting experience to work on your translations from the French. I see that nearly all your more recent articles have been about women from the English-speaking world. I hope you will continue to cover more French-language writers as they also deserve to feature in the encyclopedia. Please feel free to ask for further assistance whenever you think I might be able to help. Collaboration is what makes Wikipedia so interesting.--Ipigott (talk) 13:07, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, Ian; I learned something from each of your edits. I enjoy doing translations for several reasons, including the obvsious: it tethers me to a language. Of course, there are so many articles already written in other language Wikipedias that aren't included in EN-WP so I like to do my part in adding them to EN-WP. But in addition, through attribution, translating directly from the other language Wikipedia pays homage to the editor(s) of the article in the other language. I recognize the benefits of starting from scratch using other language pertinent sources, but that adds yet another layer of complexity to the process, e.g., language nuances from another era, so I leave that complexity to those like you who are more skilled than me in foreign languages. :) --Rosiestep (talk) 15:47, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
I noticed this about the Stella Blandy biography but forgot to mention it in my earlier comment. The lede sentence in the FR-WP refers to Stella as a fr:femme de lettres ("woman of letters"). There is no EN-WP article for "woman of letters", and I understand why you changed it to "woman writer". Yesterday, intrigued by the phrase and wondering how to deal with it in an EN-WP translation, I searched for "woman of letters" on EN-WP and there are quite a few articles which include it (and ergo why I did). If I had wikilinked "woman of letters", it would have been a redlink, while, if I had wikilinked and piped with "man of letters", it would have greenlinked. So I am curious about your views on the "femme de lettres"/"women of letters" in general. Are "woman of letters" and "man of letters" of the same ilk? What is the distinction between d:Q6673651 vs. d:Q381353 (e.g. I included the latter for Stella; was that correct?)? --Rosiestep (talk) 16:29, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
Rosiestep: "Femme de lettres" and "homme de lettres" are common expressions in French and really do not mean much more than writer. The problem with using "woman of letters" or "lady of letters" is that in English it frequently refers to women who are remembered for their wide academic background rather than for any writing they may have done. The expressions may even be used for those remembered literally for their letters or correspondence. I imagine most of the articles which contain "woman of letters" are a result of poor translations, especially machine translations. By the way, while looking for background on Stella, I discovered she was born Françoise Stella Boué and that she married Blandy under English law while she was in England. The marriage was not recognized in France. Her husband died around 1877 if I remember correctly.--Ipigott (talk) 17:00, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying, and see what I mean (above) about "language nuances from another era", lol. I found a reference for Stella's more complete birth name and added it, but nothing WRT the husband. Maybe whatever you found is not viewable where I live? --Rosiestep (talk) 17:14, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
Rosiestep: Under "Blandy" on this page you can find additional details in French. We could go on expanding your articles with sources like this but I think your objective was simply to translate the French article. I'm probably more familiar than you on how to search in languages other than English.--Ipigott (talk) 21:08, 14 January 2022 (UTC) If you really want to expand the article further, there's some interesting stuff here. But so we could continue...--Ipigott (talk) 21:19, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

Rosiestep: As I had found these two sources, I thought it was worthwhile to expand the article a bit but I'm going to stop there.--Ipigott (talk) 13:19, 15 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for that, Ian. In the meantime, I've moved on to a few more 19th-century French feminists. Certainly, they are an interesting bunch, as are the links in their FR-WP biographies. I don't know the statistics regarding overlap/non-overlap between langauge Wikipedias, but it really is fascinating to consider. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:50, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
Rosiestep: As for overlap, not much. We have about 200 in our List of French women writers while there are 2,607 redlinks in Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by occupation/Writers - France. Then there are all the French speakers from Belgium, Canada, Switzerland and North Africa. Good to hear you are continuing along these lines. Let me know if I can be of any help.--Ipigott (talk) 14:12, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
I don't want to be a bother, but if you feel like peaking at the new ones, they are these: Gisèle d'Estoc/fr:Gisèle d'Estoc; Floresca Guépin/fr:Floresca Guépin; Lucie Grange/fr:Lucie Grange; Marie Léopold-Lacour/fr:Marie Léopold Lacour; and Marie Léra/fr:Marie Léra. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:22, 15 January 2022 (UTC) Sneaking in Gabrielle Réval/fr:Gabrielle Réval. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:37, 16 January 2022 (UTC)
Rosiestep: No bother. This reminds me of the old days when we all collaborated together. I've managed to go through the first one today. The others will have to wait until tomorrow. There's just one basic thing you could check for. The French bios are all in the present tense. In translating them into English, past tenses need to be used in most cases. It's certainly interesting to put all these forgotten French women back on the map. Perhaps someday an English-speaking PhD student will take a new look at them.--Ipigott (talk) 17:35, 15 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks

What a delight to wake up today and see that all my unassessed articles are now rated on the quality scale. And what excellent timing as one of them is on the Do You Know thing on the front page. Many thanks for your diligence in reviewing and assessing these articles. CT55555 (talk) 12:21, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

CT55555: I was attracted to your articles as a result of the women's biographies you have been writing and found your other articles equally interesting and significant. In connection with your work on women, I was wondering if you would like to become a member of WikiProject Women in Red where we trying to chip away at the gender gap. You can do so by registering in the box at the top of our main project page. In any case, keep up the good work and let me know if ever I can be of any assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 12:41, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
Your comment has made my day. Thank you. I consider myself an unofficial member of Women in Red. I wanted to learn more about Wikipedia and projects before taking on any responsibilities. But maybe now is the time for me to actually put my name to a project.
I am spending my time on Wikipedia doing three things. The first two are improving the coverage of humanitarian issues and also uranium mining and I seem to be having success with that. The third is trying to chip away at the gender gap and I'm really having variable levels of success for all the reasons that I expect you know in terms of the under reporting on the work of so many women. You've probably read enough of my writing to deduce that I'm focused on writing about women who work in human rights, peacebuilding and humanitarian issues. I guess you've seen the ones where I got enough citations for the articles to be successful. If I need any help, it's probably with the draft articles that are lacking background data, especially as I'm still learning all where to get good citations from and don't have access to many of the academic sources that others may have via universities etc. So that's where I need assistance the most. As I write, I start to wonder if maybe Women In Red is the place to get help with that, I guess it's time to sign up. Thanks again. CT55555 (talk) 13:04, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

Question from Anonymous-owl-contributor (18:32, 14 January 2022)

edit

Dear Ipigott, I've seen this month's Women in Red is about women in business and I have written a draft article about a prominent banker named Ida Liu from Citi Private Bank. It's been done as a favour to some of their comms team so I appreciate I may not have the most objective perspective but I was wondering if you may be able to help me understand any areas it can be improved from a neutrality perspective and make it more suitable for inclusion on Wikipedia? She has a really interesting background and I thought she would be a good candidate for inclusion. Someone else posted a version straight to livespace the other day which has now been draftified and I'm happy to support contributions to either version. The article I wrote: Draft:Ida_Liu, The alternate one that was written by someone else: Draft:Ida_Liu_2. Apologies if this comes across as pushy - that's not my intent and feel free to ignore if you don't take requests like this here :) Anonymous-owl-contributor (talk) 18:32, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

Anonymous-owl-contributor: It looks to me as if you have made a good start on this article. I'll look it at more carefully tomorrow. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 21:00, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
Anonymous-owl-contributor: I've now had time to look more carefully at your biography and have moved it to article space as it is certainly up to the required standard. Today is a feast day for which Bach wrote several cantatas including Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin, BWV 125, which was on DYK 10 years ago and TFA 4 years ago. I'm less happy that Georg Christoph Biller had to wait days for a Main page appearance under recent deaths, and then stayed not even for a full day. Question from VRlasso on Draft:Francia Russell (17:11, 2 February 2022)

edit

Hello- I am creating an Article for a notable person and I am not sure where to begin the text for the Article here under my draft: Francia Russell. What goes here?: {{AfC submission|t||ts=20220202171107|u=VRlasso|ns=3|demo=}} Is there a template to use here in either source editing or visual editing? Thanks in advance. --VRlasso (talk) 17:11, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, VRlasso and welcome to Wikipedia. I have left a message on your talk page with a number of suggestions on how you can learn about editing but perhaps the easiest way to get started is with The Wikipedia Adventure. Try this out and let me know if you need further assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 17:57, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
(talk page watcher)I would also suggest not starting out editing on Wikipedia by creating an article, especially not an article on (what I would assume is) a WP:BLP. Article creation is arguably one of the hardest things to do successfully here on Wikipedia. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 18:07, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

I had no clue when I started this that 1) there would be so many redlinks or 2) that both her husband and son Farai should also have articles. But, hers is now written (my reward to myself for finishing the nationality laws in Africa). I have asked GRuban to help me with photos, as I think I have found one that will work for her and photos of the hospitals too. If you have time, could you give it a copyedit? If you are too busy, no worries. Thank you. SusunW (talk) 18:57, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

  • SusunW Looks pretty good to me but I'm not at my best at the moment. I'm feeling a bit under the weather as a result of serious administrative problems in real life. Absolutely nothing to do with Wikipedia. I hope to get everything sorted out tomorrow or next week at the latest. If I'm less active, that's why.--Ipigott (talk) 19:39, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much Ian for looking at it. I truly appreciate it. Hope things calm down for you. SusunW (talk) 19:46, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

Question from Clientesmayteck (12:56, 7 February 2022)

edit

How is the best way to create a biography page for a client? Thanks, --Clientesmayteck (talk) 12:56, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

  • Hi there, Clientesmayteck, and welcome to Wikipedia. First of all, I should point out that Wikipedia discourages articles about people with whom the editor has a personal relationship. In this connection, you should read carefully Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. More generally, all articles but particularly those about living people, need to referenced to informative secondary sources, such as newspapers, journals, published books and award coverage. If you are editing an existing article, you should ensure that each addition is adequately referenced. If not, it is likely to be deleted. I see the welcome notice on your talk page provides a number of useful links to sites which will help you with editing. One good way to get started is to use The Wikipedia Adventure. Please let me know if you need further assistance or run into problems. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 13:17, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
I would also like to say that if you're being paid, you are required to declare it per WP:PAID. Also read WP:BIOBlaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 13:23, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Question from VRlasso on User talk:VRlasso (20:40, 11 February 2022)

edit

Hello- I inserted an image of the subject I am creating an Article for. I asked the photographer permission to use it and she gave me full permission and copyright. I received a couple of combative and accusatory responses from two members of Wikipedia who I am guessing are volunteers. One informed me that I must be receiving money for writing the article (I am not) and the other accused me of being a PR person promoting the person I am writing about. My question is 1. Did I do the right thing with the image? Is there some other permission I need?? 2. Is there anyone to let know that some of the volunteers are unnecessarily disparaging? Honestly, I have put so much time in this project, but I am ready to throw in the towel. Thanks for any advice. --VRlasso 20:40, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, VRlasso, and welcome to Wikipedia. Unfortunately, as far as I can see the image is under copyright protection at [1]. I'm not sure the subject can simply give you permission to use it. It would be far better if the subject could provide you with a new image. I'll be tied up all day tomorrow but will try to get back to you on this on Sunday. Don't throw in the towel. I'm sure we can work things out together.--Ipigott (talk) 21:16, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for getting back to me. There are no other images the photographer has that better represent Ms. Russell. I can just remove it and not have images on her Article although it's not ideal. — Preceding unsigned comment added by VRlasso (talkcontribs) 22:13, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
  • VRlasso: I've now had time to look at Draft:Francia Russell and the reactions on your talk page. I'm really sorry you've been treated so unjustly. I'm sure we can sort things out and make you much more comfortable about contributing to Wikipedia. I should first perhaps let you know that writing a biography of a living person is one of the most difficult tasks to undertake on Wikipedia. You can find help and advice at WikiProject Women in Red where we try to encourage the creation of more articles about women. In connection with biographies, we have two essays which I think you will find useful: Ten Simple Rules and Primer for creating women's biographies. You will see that at the moment your draft article needs to be improved by citing at least three reliable secondary sources which point to Russel's notability. These could include newspaper or journal articles, coverage in published books or biographical dictionaries, critical assessments of her work and write-ups in connection with the awards she has received. You could, for example, make a start by drawing on The Oxford Dictionary of Dance. Information presented in the article should be backed by a reference to such sources although the same source can of course be used more than once. As for the photograph, I agree with your suggestion that the most reliable way of adding the image to Commons would be to ask the photographer to do so himself. If you are able to follow these suggestions, please go ahead and try to improve the draft. You should also let me know if you run into any further difficulties. (You might be interested to know I've written quite a few biographies of women in ballet myself, including Dinna Bjørn. You might like to look at a few of those included in Category:Ballet mistresses or in our List of female dancers.)--Ipigott (talk) 11:02, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Thank you- this is very helpful information. I also appreciate the acknowledgement of the treatment on my talk page. It was bizarre to be treated that way and I think if we were face to face this would not have happened. I understand that they are trying to combat misinformation or people with vested interests, but I am volunteering to write about a famous woman within the arts community of Seattle on my own accord. I was surprised to see that no one had written an article on her and it's been a lot of my free time researching and figuring out how to do this on my own.
I haven't done my footnotes yet; perhaps I am approaching my writing of the article differently. I have many reliable sources including the University of Washington special archives (they have an entire collection on Francia Russell and her husband) as well as the New York Public Library, Dance Magazine, Ballet Review and articles in the NY Times, New Yorker and National Public Radio. I haven't added them yet as I know that doing references is going to be challenging!
I looked at Dinna Bjorn's article and I will look at the links you gave me as well as the Oxford Dictionary of Dance. Thank you again for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by VRlasso (talkcontribs) 17:56, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

  • VRlasso: Just remember to let me know when I should take a new look at your draft. I entirely agree with you that it is strange that no one has written about Francia Russell until now. I try to cover important players from countries where English is not the first language but given the enormous interest by Americans in their heritage, why on earth had no one covered her until now!!!--Ipigott (talk) 19:36, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
lpigott@Ipigott Helllo! I am finished with the rough draft of the article on Francia Russell. I was hoping you could look it over and offer any suggestions if you could? I appreciate your help; it will feel good to have this submitted soon. It has been a hard, painstaking process but rewarding knowing this is a valuable contribution to Wikipedia!! Thank you. I look forward to hearing from you. VRlasso 18:19, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
VRlasso: At first sight it looks pretty good but it's my bedtime now. I'll look at it more closely tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 20:54, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! There's no rush. -VR VRlasso 21:48, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
VRlasso: I must say you've made an excellent start with this. I would have moved it to mainspace but this will now require the assistance of an administrator as the name was already used in a redirect. Well done! Hope there will be many more.--Ipigott (talk) 09:07, 15 March 2022 (UTC)
VRlasso: Now in mainspace. I've added categories, authority control and defaultsort, and made links from occurrences of Francia Russell in other articles.--Ipigott (talk) 16:14, 15 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! I appreciate your help and guidance and am so glad to have had this experience- it took a lot of patience, but it was worth it knowing Francia Russell will finally be noted. VR VRlasso 03:19, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
lpigott @Ipigott- Am I supposed to do anything else? Do I need to submit the draft or has it already been submitted?
Thank you again for guidance! VRlasso 03:23, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
  • VRlasso: No, you don't need to do anything else. Francia Russell is now in Wikipedia's article space. You are of course welcome to make further improvements at any time. If you intend to write more articles about women, you are welcome to become a member of WikiProject Women in Red where we're trying to chip away at the gender gap. You can do so by registering in the box at the top of the project's main page.--Ipigott (talk) 06:56, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

(And, to keep this in one place: @Ser Amantio di Nicolao and Gerda Arendt:) And she's now an FP! If we want to schedule her, we could either go for 2 October 2024 (175th birthday) or 27 October 2026 (250th anniversary of her death). Or we could just leave it to the queue, but I suspect that's similar timeframes. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.6% of all FPs 21:00, 17 February 2022 (UTC)

Perhaps the schedulers know (or could be told) that March is Women's month, and place her then? - Congratulations! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:24, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
I'd imagine that might have issues insofar as there's a lot of women who could take that slot that haven't appeared yet. In reverse order of oldness, and solely looking at opera File:Marian Anderson.jpg (2022), File:Rosa Raisa (1917) - Archivio Storico Ricordi FOTO002701 - Restoration.jpg (Oct 2020) File:Atelier Nadar - Fly scene from Offenbach's Orphée aux enfers with Jeanne Granier as Eurydice and Eugène Vauthier as Jupiter, 1887 revival, wide-angle shot.jpg (Sept 2020), File:Nelly Martyl by Jean Reutlinger (Image 10715).jpg (Sept 2020), File:Lucy Arbell as Queen Amahelli in Massenet's Bacchus, wide view.jpg (July 2020), File:Rosa Raisa (1917) - Archivio Storico Ricordi FOTO002701 - Restoration.jpg (April 2019), and I didn't look before that. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.6% of all FPs 01:02, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
Congratulations, Adam, for succeeding in bringing it up to FP. It looks to me as if the 150th (not 250th) anniversary of her unfortunate death would be appropriate. It might look a long way off but it's amazing how quickly the years speed by on Wikipedia. Maybe in the meantime, perhaps with the assistance of Gerda Arendt we could at least try to nominate the article for DYK. I believe there are special provisions for Women's month but I don't remember exactly what they are. Nattes à chat might also be interested in promoting the image on the FR wiki, no doubt with a translation of the article.--Ipigott (talk) 07:49, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
Too late for DYK, I looked - and blamed myself for having looked too late. Adam, do the others you mentioned have clearer anniversaries a little closer? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:07, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
ps: while I was disappointed that I failed to nominate her in time, I consoled myself thinking that - as TFP - her face gets the prime attention, while on DYK - knowing some of the players, just look at the latest singer's nom, Elena Guseva - they might not take the pic at all and want to speak only about her death to please the "broad" audience. I have a different idea of "broad". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:16, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
Anderson would be great any last day of February, switching from Black month to women's month. Or 22 April to match Kathleen Battle for TFA. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:19, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
Hi Ipigott I posted a message here on the sans pagEs talk page here about Marguerite Priola. Nattes à chat (talk) 16:58, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
Let's see:
  • Rosa Raisa (30 May 1893 – 28 September 1963) - 60th anniversary of her death?
  • Lucy Arbell in Bacchus - I'd say 5 May 1909, premiere of Bacchus, is the key point. Which pushes us to 2034. Arbell (8 June 1878 – 21 May 1947) gives us a convenient 21 May 2022 75th anniversary, but we have several featured pictures of her, so might want to have a poke there.
  • Nelly Martyl (1 April 1884 – 9 November 1953) - Well, that's kind of obvious. 70th anniversary of her death, 9 November 2023.
  • Marian Anderson - her 125th birthday is this month, but the slot's already filled and changing a filled slot is.... best avoided unless you have a very good case. April 8, 1993 leads to a possible April 8, 2023 slot.

Set all these up (except Priola). That just leaves the Jeanne Granier, though, honestly? There's a million photos of her on Gallica so I'm tempted to give her a sole focus one. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.6% of all FPs 18:34, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

@Ser Amantio di Nicolao, Gerda Arendt, and Ipigott: Here's the Granier options. Should be four pages, fifty images per page, and several of them are really good. Let me know of any you especially like. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.6% of all FPs 11:37, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

Perhaps Cg2p0B0u8m would be interested in selecting one or two of these.--Ipigott (talk) 13:56, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
I have a bit of a hard time choosing of so many presented so small. - I nominated Bailac for DYK, with the last opera by Saint-Saens, - I'd have trouble saying something where I can't verify the fact because most refs are in French. Adam, could you perhaps crop the pic for DYK purposes, because her face is too small for stamp size? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:33, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt: Thanks for working on Bailac and nominating for DYK.

This image in colour, already cropped, may be more suitable. Others can be found in Commons. Maybe Adam could enhance it further.--Ipigott (talk) 12:54, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
That IS better, and I even prefer File:Germaine Bailac, 1913.jpg which shows without many words how famous she was. It will have to go to the article. - There: some things I didn't touch. The lead should have no refs, just be a summary of sourced info below, - you can tell better which ref should go where. You will have seen that she didn't perform the title role in SS's last opera, and the one she did isn't even mentioned in our article about the opera, sigh (other than in the roles' list), - always more little things one could do ... --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:59, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt: I've included the image as cropped but mentioned the magazine in the caption. I don't think appearing at the Cannes Casino indicates particular success but it's a good picture.--Ipigott (talk) 13:21, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt: Thanks for the box but I think it would be better to include the colour image. Can't we re-place the other one on the left as I had it before?--Ipigott (talk) 13:26, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt: I agree the old image looked strange on the left but it was even more messy at the bottom. I've substituted a new one and think everything looks fine now. Thanks for all your efforts.--Ipigott (talk) 13:52, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt: What's with the caption "Bailac as Carmen (2016)" - that can't possibly be the right year. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.6% of all FPs 21:56, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Why ask me? Would I insert a left image sandwiching the text? ... a left image under a header?? - seriously: I go to bed now. And tomorrow: continue translating de:In Freunschaft, another "recent death", and a birthday gift. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:22, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Also, if ye are interested, I found this: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b53225154b.r=Germaine%20Bailac?rk=21459;2 Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.6% of all FPs 22:00, 21 February 2022 (UTC)
Adam Cuerden: That's the one we had originally. It's on Commons. Gerda and I both preferred the one in colour. I had place the one with the piano on the left but Gerda though she was facing in the wrong direction. Perhaps we could include a gallery. There are others on Commons too.--Ipigott (talk) 07:47, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
The present doesn't work, and I was tired and snippy last night, sorry. If we use Carmen, which I think is a good idea, I'd take that to the ibox, and have the coloured one below it. The piano image really shows more her precious surroundings than her face, - marketing value but not much information. When DYK is over, we can use the piano pic instead of the coloured one. - Background: left images should only be used for people looking right, but not if right under a header (displacing text), double not when sandwiching text, and triple not if displacing not only text but even the following header. In this particular case: to connect Carmen to Early life is a bit misleading also ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:27, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt: I certainly appreciate your work to date on Germaine Bailac as well as your views and experience with DYK. Nevertheless, from now on I'll leave further discussion and adaptations to you, Adam and any reviewers who appear. I would prefer to spend my time on creating new articles, including more on forgotten French women opera singers, than in discussing the merits of picture selection and placement in the Bailac article. That said, if you need further assistance with the French sources or the text of the article, please let me know. As you've no doubt noticed, the French version of the article contains much more detail on her performances, with multiple references. It seemed to me that for a biographical article in English, these precise details were of limited importance but I know some editors like to include such chronological lists.--Ipigott (talk) 10:38, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
I didn't want to edit-war, so thought I better propose here first, and also explain image placement considerations which are not only for her article. Please let me know of others who might go to DYK, and thank you for what you do for forgotten women, all the time, not only in March. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:47, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Gerda Arendt: Thanks. I also try to avoid edit wars at all costs and am happy to say I have never yet been accused of participating in any. Apart from obvious violations and insults, I very rarely revert anything. If I really need to, I leave a talk page explanation. My most recent French opera singer is Rose Delaunay. I'm not happy with the image but there's one here on Gallica, which could perhaps be cropped for DYK, and others on Commons, e.g. File:Rose_Delaunay_Album_Mariani.JPEG.--Ipigott (talk) 12:03, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

I am sorry I have only just seen the alert for me to contribute something - but I am not clear what. If there is still something needed from me, please do let me know. /Cg2p0B0u8m (talk) 20:40, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

Don't worry, Cg2p0B0u8m. There's nothing you need to do.--Ipigott (talk) 20:58, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

  • Hi there, Just Another Cringy Username. Thanks for taking an interest in this article and following up on the PROD vs AfD explanations from Asilvering. I can hardly agree with you that the existing references were inadequate but I took advantage of your notice to add more recent material. I have looked through your edits and can see you have carried out useful work on cleaning up existing contributions. Unless you come across articles which you really think are strong candidates for deletion, I suggest you concentrate on improving articles yourself rather than adding deletion tags. I see you have also prodded Elias Diab and are considering taggig Professional Convention Management Association. I was surprised you added AfD to Artem Avetisyan, a biography with many valid sources in Russian. Your PROD on Clifford Williams (actor) has been removed. If you are keen to improve your performance as an editor, just let me know and I can no doubt help you along. (cc Liz)--Ipigott (talk) 11:25, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
@Just Another Cringy Username On the Clifford Williams one, even with bad sourcing this one would be an obvious keep. See the "Laurence Olivier Award for Best Director" template at the bottom? Even if you don't know anything at all about this award, and have no idea if it would be likely to make someone notable, you can expand the template and see that every other winner in the nearly 50-year history of this award, barring only two exceptions, has a Wikipedia page. If you see something like that, you know that deleting this article would make it a significant exception, so you know to leave that one alone unless you are really, really sure you have a compelling reason for delete. And that takes a lot of work, while removing unsourced claims but leaving the article up is quick and easy. For a similar example, I would never bother to PROD or AfD an Olympic medallist. They may well fail to pass WP:GNG, but is it worth my time to prove it? eh. -- asilvering (talk) 19:25, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
  • @Asilvering Yeah, I went on a PRD tear yesterday. I think all these badly sourced fanboy articles and the "put my favorite professor in Wikipedia" thing are starting to get to me. I'll admit to being jaded by nature. Happens when you grow up watching Daria. Just Another Cringy Username (talk) 21:50, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
@Just Another Cringy Username A useful guideline to have in mind for professors is that many of them will easily pass WP:NAUTHOR but articles on academics rarely are written with passing that particular guideline in mind. If you see they've published more than one book, chances are the sources are out there to establish notability, so you might as well move on unless you want to go look for them.
If you start feeling too jaded about the "fanboy" stuff, it might be time to step away from the Newcomer Task firehose-of-drek for a bit. (I am definitely a lot more optimistic about this project since I stopped using that thing!) Make a WP:WOMRED turn blue, or toss together a quick article on the last nonfiction book you read (does it have at least two academic reviews? then it passes WP:NBOOK and you're good to go). -- asilvering (talk) 00:42, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

Response to Talk Page Response for Catherine L. Ross

edit

Hi again! So sorry, I'm really new to Wikipedia, so please excuse me if I am fumbling around. I am an intern for a center affiliated with her, I manage a lot of her online websites and it came to the center's attention that her Wikipedia had a strange undisclosed paid editing tag. Again, I'm very new to Wikipedia pages and the talk pages I was in prior to this one, told me to come to this page and ask for a review, as I wouldn't be able to review/ edit it myself due to my affiliation, and the Women in Red talk page was super passionate about notable women bios on the website. In terms of why I think her page deserves to be reviewed, is due to her multiple accomplishments as a black woman in a traditionally male dominated field. In addition, I looked through her page myself and everything on it seemed accurate, to my knowledge, with sourcing for most of the biography. So I would really appreciate it if you could review it or refer me to someone who could review it, and if it still doesn't comply I would be more than willing to ask for sources from around the center if that's what's missing. Thanks again for your response and apologies again for any fumbling! ReginaDevi (talk) 19:55, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

ReginaDevi: I'll get back to you on this tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 21:45, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

@Ipigott: Thank you so much!ReginaDevi (talk) 22:22, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

ReginaDevi: First of all, I am pleased to see that over the past 24 hours Beccaynr has made considerable improvements to the article and removed the tag. The tag was placed on the article as the editor in question believed that important details had been added by someone who was being paid for the work. (In this connection, see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest.) This may or may nor be the case but it looks as if everything is now in order. Please let me know if you need further assistance.--Ipigott (talk) 07:15, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Hi ReginaDevi, thank you for asking for help with this article. I have access to the Wikipedia Library, so I used this resource to make updates, and based on the sources added and her massive CV posted on the Georgia Tech website, there is likely more that can be done. I encourage you to review the conflict of interest guideline and to make edit requests on the article Talk page. The article is on my watchlist, so I may be one of the editors who can respond to a request to make changes to the article. I am also hoping we can add a more recent image to the article, and there is a description of how to request a photo from the subject of an article here. Thanks again, Beccaynr (talk) 14:17, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

@Beccaynr: Thanks so much again, you all were so helpful! I will definitely follow up with you on the picture and review the guidelines and procedures!ReginaDevi (talk) 19:08, 28 February 2022 (UTC)

Polite request for help with draft article

edit

You were kind enough to say I could contact you when I had a draft page ready. I have taken a woman in red Carol Van Strum, USA environmentalist and have done a bio page in VisualEditor in my sandbox with citations, internal and external links, categories etc after watching/reading all the helpful things you suggested. However, as a rank beginner, I realise I have probably made many mistakes. I also know you are very busy! I wonder if you or someone else in the women in red project might have a look and offer pointers on how I can improve my draft. Apologies for butting into your time.Balance person (talk) 12:16, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Balance person: You made a really good start on this with pertinent references. I've worked mainly on rewriting the lead, emphasizing the reasons why she is notable. As a result, I added a short section on her early life. I hope the reference I have used is correct. If not, please substitute a more appropriate one. As you've probably seen, I've moved it to article space, added a few categories and default sort, and included the WIR climate tag to the talk page. I hope this is the first of many more biographies. Please let me know if you need further assistance.--Ipigott (talk) 14:12, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your help with Carol VS

edit

Wow. That was quick and so helpful! As the article is now in 'Article space' (?) what happens next? Is it the same as Main space or do I need to do other things? If it is public now, others can edit it? How long would it stay up? In other words, can I tell my friends yet? !! Balance person (talk) 14:34, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Balance person: Article space is exactly the same as mainspace. You don't need to do any more. The article has now been "published". You are of course welcome to work on it further if you wish. Feel free to tell your friends. I can't guarantee it won't face any further problems, one never can, but everything looks fine to me. If you're interested, I've also added Carol Van Strum to Wikidata here.--Ipigott (talk) 15:07, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Dear Ipigott, I hope you are fine.
CVS actually made it on to the DYK column so that was great!
And new topic
I am still working on the visibility of women's 'stuff' in Wikipedia. I have made a possible stub of a page for Women's Report. I wonder if it would be possible for someone in the women in red project to take a look at it? It is not a woman in red at all but it relates to women. I could put this message in the Tea House if you think that is more appropriate? I hope you can access the draft at User: Balance person/women's report but knowing me I will have done something incorrect! Ipigott (talk)</nowiki> Balance person (talk) 09:03, 15 April 2022 (UTC)
Good to hear from you again.Balance person. Yes, well done with Van Strum and the DYK. Women's Report is just the kind of article we encourage on Women in Red. Rather than consulting the Tea House, you could have posted a message on the WiR talk page. But now that I have looked carefully through the draft, it looks to me as if it's almost ready for article space. I could have moved it now but I thought you might like to look it through once more and complete the section on bibliography, if possible with refs or ISBN numbers. Just let me know when you want me to move it.--Ipigott (talk) 09:58, 15 April 2022 (UTC)
Gosh, that was quick! Thank you. I have added the ISBN for the bibliography. A query...if things are in the references section, they do not need to be in the bibliography section too...is that right? If so, then I guess I have finished for now and the page could be moved, much to my delight. If not, I will have another go at the Bib. Thank you for your time as always. And I note where my query can be posted next time. Thanks! Ipigott (talk)</nowiki> Balance person (talk) 10:14, 15 April 2022 (UTC)
Balance person: I couldn't see you had made any further edits on the article. Perhaps you forgot to "publish".--Ipigott (talk) 10:25, 15 April 2022 (UTC)
Sorry...in my excitement I forgot to publish. Yours, Bonkers. ~~~ Balance person (talk) 10:32, 15 April 2022 (UTC)
Thank you very much for moving Women's Report. I am delighted and will continue to improve it as I find more information. ~~~ Balance person (talk) 07:15, 16 April 2022 (UTC)

Polite request re Sylvia Ashton-Warner stub

edit

Please forgive my getting in touch again but....I came across a woman's biography page that is not a woman in red but is a stub. I have done some work on the page and wonder if you or someone connected to the work on the gender gap in wikipedia might take a look at it. As you know, I am just beginning as an editor here so.... I may have upset the original maker of the page by changing so much. Then, I want to get rid of the reference to wordpress, as I now understand it is not accepted as a reputable source. Not sure how to do that. Also I have no idea if I have put too many reading references in and also am not sure if I have managed to edit the original citations list properly either. In short, I may have made a pickle! I also have no idea if it is still a stub or not. If not, I have no idea how to change its status. Final question, should I have done this in my sandbox instead of on the page itself? I am assuming sandbox is for brand new drafts rather than alterations to a page already made. No hurry at all from my side. Just trying to contribute to the March 2022 push for women. Balance person (talk) 11:12, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

Balance person: You don't need to apologize. I'm always happy to hear from our contributors, especially those who recently joined. If you want to get rid of a reference to Wordpress, then you'll need to find another suitable source to replace it. I've looked through the article and it seems to me you have made a number of useful additions. As it's certainly no longer a stub, I've removed the stub tag and rated it C class on the talk page. I've also added the WIR-217 tag and listed the upgraded article on the corresponding page. The section on Awards probably needs attention. You should either keep it to short bullet points or preferably rewrite the whole thing in running text. Each award should be referenced. You certainly don't need to use your sandbox for additions to existing articles. In some cases, if you are in doubt about the changes you want to introduce you can mention them on the article's talk page. If you're lucky, someone will respond. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need further assistance.--Ipigott (talk) 11:45, 6 March 2022 (UTC)
Ipigott (talk) Thank you for your help. I have improved the wonky citation and improved the awards section. Balance person (talk) 19:13, 6 March 2022 (UTC)
(talk page watcher) Hallo @Balance person: Thanks for your work on Sylvia Ashton-Warner - I've just had a look at it out of curiosity. A couple of points:
  1. When you mention an article on a talk page it's helpful to make it a link, for the sake of the editor you're talking to and anyone else who wants to follow up.
  2. We don't leave a space before a reference - I've tidied these in this article
  3. We don't use sloping/curly quotes/apostrophes, only the straight one: " ' ". I've tidied these.
There's a lot to learn about editing Wikipedia but it's an interesting journey. Welcome, and Happy Editing! PamD 16:19, 6 March 2022 (UTC)
@Balance person: Intrigued by "Despite a somewhat troubled relationship between Ashton-Warner and New Zealand ...", I looked at the ref 10 cited there, and found a fascinating description of a colourful and somewhat controversial life. Plenty of scope there to expand the article, and perhaps it does need something more about her time out of NZ to explain that "troubled relationship"? PamD 16:31, 6 March 2022 (UTC)
PamDThank you for doing the tidying up! There is indeed a lot to learn but I am taking notes and looking forward to when this becomes more or less natural! I left out loads about SAW because it does seem to be so subjective. Half of the people who knew her think she is a haloed genius and the others think her husband was a saint. Women seem to be subject to different and exacting standards. So, I chickened out Balance person (talk) 19:25, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

Thank you. Sadly, over all this, I forgot about the French singer, and now she's one day late for DYK, and I'm sort of too proud to nominate. You could, though, you'd probably receive more lenience. I'll do the normal copy-edit. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:11, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Stella Madzimbamuto

edit

On 8 March 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Stella Madzimbamuto, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that South African nurse Stella Madzimbamuto filed an appeal in 1968 with the Privy Council of the United Kingdom that resulted in the Rhodesian government being declared illegal? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Stella Madzimbamuto. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Stella Madzimbamuto), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Thanks, Gerda Arendt. Pity we have just one batch of eight for today. Thanks to the two-batch approach last year, we were able to clock up 36 by 8 March compared to only 13 this year. Perhaps you and other enthusiasts such as Victuallers can help us to compensate during the rest of the month. There should be plenty of new articles to work on.--Ipigott (talk) 08:32, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
Check my user page: several are written and nominated (5 on top of the two in prep), others to be written and nominated, one today of course, two more planned, and more to be found. What you could do is review. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:12, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

Now, you can also listen on YouTube, and more music, the piece by Anna Korsun begins after about one hour, and the voices call "Freiheit!" (freedom, instead of "Freude", joy). Music every day, pictured in songs. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:39, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

Thanks, Gerda. Always nice to hear from you with your music links. I was wondering whether the QPQ problems with Gloria Rojas have now been sorted out in connection with Germaine Bailac. DYK for Rose Delaunay

edit

On 25 March 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Rose Delaunay, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Rose Delaunay (pictured), a French operatic soprano who began her career at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, and her husband, an actor, celebrated their diamond wedding in 1937? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Rose Delaunay. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 00:02, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi there! Apparently the 3,000 performances sentence is unreferenced in the article and the DYK reviewers are asking for a reference for it. Is it mentioned in [2] or is it in a different source? Please clarify this as soon as possible, thanks! Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 01:21, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

Narutolovehinata5: Yes, that's the source. "...notamment celui de Carmen, qu'elle a chanté près de trois mille fois avec le succès le plus éclatant."--Ipigott (talk) 08:46, 27 March 2022 (UTC)
Noted. Because the sentence is talking about a DYK fact, DYK rules require hook fact sentences to have a footnote even if a relevant one already exists elsewhere. For DYK compliance purposes, please duplicate the reference after the 3,000 performances sentence. Thank you. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 09:22, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

Question from MullickAyan (20:56, 27 March 2022)

Hello Sir

I was wondering if it's possible to speak with my mentor over a video call.

Best regards

Ayan Mullick Madison, WI, USA. --MullickAyan (talk) 20:56, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, MullickAyan, and welcome to Wikipedia. I would be happy to hear about your problem if it is related to editing on Wikipedia. You'll see I've left some suggestions about gaining experience in editing on your talk page. Please let me know if you run into any problems. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 05:53, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for your response, @Ipigott.
I was wondering if the below prehistoric timeline could be visualized with like the Urbanization timeline below.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_prehistory
A Visual History of Urbanization - Metrocosm: metrocosm.com/map-history-cities.html MullickAyan (talk) 22:28, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
MullickAyan: A Visual History of Urbanization does indeed offer a very effective overview of the development of cities but our Timeline of prehistory covers many different types of development. If you intend to develop videos yourself, they could for example be included to illustrate certain aspects such as the development of Homo sapiens but I think it would be too complicated to cover all the items covered in one video. Unless you can trace the map yourself, you could be confronted with problems of copyright.--Ipigott (talk) 05:59, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
Minor addition - rights free maps at openstreetmap. Victuallers (talk) 09:41, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
@Ipigott, I'm not looking to create a video. I was looking for the prehistory timeline to be represented on a world map with a time slider on a page like in 'A Visual History of Urbanization'; instead of just texts without any visual representation of the progress by time and location. Is that possible to do on Wikipedia? MullickAyan (talk) 15:27, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
MullickAyan: I used the term video because that's how you started this exchange. If you prefer to use time slider, that's more specific. Everything is possible on Wikipedia providing you do not create any problems with copyright or duplication of developments on other sites. If you feel you are able to put together time-slider illustrations, please go ahead. I agree with you that they would be far more interesting and effective than text alone. Let me know when you think your first one is ready.--Ipigott (talk) 15:37, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
Aah, so I wanted to do a video call with someone who could put in place the underlying framework on Wikipedia so I could plug in the details from the link below into it. :)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_prehistory
I'm not familiar with Wikipedia's tools enough to put together that first PoC. I wanted to video call with someone who could. MullickAyan (talk) 18:45, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

Women's/gender studies list

I'm exhausted. Tried to cover Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. Figured most folks who edit on here are UK/US based and would have access to sources. I hope we get a lot of articles. SusunW (talk) 18:38, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

Lajmmoore: Perhaps Sage (Wiki Ed) can help with this. I've included Gender studies in the Meta page Celebrate Women April which might be useful.--Ipigott (talk) 11:38, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

Some more new editors

edit

Hi. I'm attending this event and there are are several new-ish editor attendees. I know you are expert at working with new editors, inviting them to WiR, etc., so I thought I'd bring this to your attention but no worries if you're busy with other things. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:16, 31 March 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the alert, Rosie. As you may know, I've been following the Smithsonian initiatives with interest and am happy to hear you have been taking part. From the page you linked, I can see two short articles were created but unfortunately there is nothing in the Outcomes section. I'll certainly try to assist any new contributors I can identify. There were no Women in Red registrations yesterday from any the new participants listed.--Ipigott (talk) 07:07, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
Rosiestep: Spent quite some time looking into this but found that most participants just made minor improvements to existing articles. The exceptions were Paulukon and Yawlsbins. I left short messages on their talk pages. While it is useful to have Wikipedia pages for editathons, many now make use of dashboards which provide info on the contributions of each participant as well as on the articles created, etc. You might suggest this to the Smithsonian and other organizations which regularly host meetups. See Creating your dashboard event.--Ipigott (talk) 09:33, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

Thanks, Thirukannan, for creating this interesting article. It has already been linked to the German and Spanish versions by a Wikidata bot. You can make such links yourself by clicking on "Add links" under "Languages" at the bottom of the left-hand margin. Creating Draft Articles

edit

Hi Ipigott, hope all is well with you. I was trying to figure out if there is a space where I can create draft articles and keep working on it with some of your experienced reviews on it so that i can better it before the article is actually ready for publication? I understand that the sandbox is a practicing tool for article creation but that it also clears out the space later. I'm certain there must be a draft space somewhere where we can build articles in our own time and have them reviewed and revised before the final publication. I just don't exactly know where that is. Could you please help me out with it? Knight Brad (talk) 16:59, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

Knight Brad I am not Ian, but I watch his page. I work in draft all the time. See instructions Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Essays/Primer for creating women's biographies#Creating the article for creating a draft. SusunW (talk) 17:04, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
Knight Brad: The easy answer is that instead of using your sandbox, you can create a draft article in your user space as user:Knight Brad/article name. When it is ready for article space, it can be moved. Hope this helps.--Ipigott (talk) 19:45, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
Hi Ipigott, thank you for replying. Yes, that really helps. Thank you very much. That's what I'll do then (create the new articles on the User Page). But since it would be my first article, I may need to approach you from time to time on matters that may seem trivial to you but deeply confusing to me (like the proceedings of Wikipedia Articles). I hope that's okay? Knight Brad (talk) 21:15, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
Hi SusunW, thank you for helping me with this link. It doesn't exactly mention where to create draft articles but it has loads of other useful pointers in article creation which is very valuable especially when creating the very first article. And going through that link made me feel more confident that I'm on the right track. So thank you so much for your help on this. I'm glad I got to know another person out here ~~~~
Knight Brad (talk) 21:10, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
Knight Brad I am not remotely technically inclined on Wikipedia. It is the most frustrating part of writing articles here to me. You have to know how to code stuff, just to write.   However, if you just do a search for the name, click on the red link that appears, and then press the forth bullet point that comes up (It says "You can also start your new article at Special:Mypage/ARTICLE NAME. There, you can develop the article with less risk of deletion, ask other editors to help work on it, and move it into "article space" when it is ready.") you can follow the steps in the essay. I'm sure what Ian said is probably easier, but since the WP technology gives me a headache, I just do what I know how to do. Feel free to reach out if you need help with stuff that isn't technically related   SusunW (talk) 21:33, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
Hi SusunW, I absolutely understand what you're going through because I seem to be in the exact same boat. It's not so much about the researching or article creation or editing or formatting. That's all well and good. It's what comes after that - the whole Wikipedia procedure that seems to be throwing me off the field. It's like sitting in a math class with everything flying over my head and just waiting for the literature class to ring in, just to get back in touch with my own intellect.
But I've been trying my best to learn everything out here because my very reason for being here is the 'Women In Red Project' and I don't want to do the opposite of helping these women. So thank you for being so kind so as to offer the help that you have done. The link you sent earlier did help me too. And now we've also connected with each other so we can help each other out as and when required down the line.
I know I'm still new here. But if you need my help on anything, then you can count on it. Thank you once again ~~~~ Knight Brad (talk) 23:50, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
Knight Brad: I'm glad to see you have made contact with Susun. She's one of our most competent editors and is a good example of how people who have difficulty with technology can nevertheless achieve excellence on Wikipedia. Just let me know when you have progressed with your first draft and I'll take a look. I'm always happy to help out whenever contributors experience difficulties.--Ipigott (talk) 06:20, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much Ipigott for the encouragement. In fact, I've been moving forward only because of your previous encouragement. So it means a lot. Thank you. Yes, after I create the first draft I'll get back to you because I wouldn't know how to move forward from there, or if I've made some mistakes or something. So I'll definitely need to get back to you for your help and advice. Thank you so much ~~~~ Knight Brad (talk) 15:20, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

Thank you so much for creating her. She was one of the standouts during my research for the list and I was so hoping you would write her. SusunW (talk) 17:45, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

Yes, she certainly deserved an article. At least two of those who worked with her should also be covered.--Ipigott (talk) 18:57, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
Well that is my hope, that in writing about these women, we discover others that can be added to the redlist for future work. They are in a hard period as many of these women were born during WWII and they became active in the 1960s and 1970s, so records about them are unlikely to be digitized. I am thrilled with the outcomes so far. SusunW (talk) 19:23, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
Yes, as you say many of them are my contemporaries. That's one of the reasons I find them interesting. Among those deserving articles are Lene Koch born 1947 [3], [4], [5]; Eva Hemmer Hansen 1913-1983 [6], [7]; Tania Ørum born 1945 [8], [9], [10]. I'll try to cover these sooner or later but in the meantime will add them to the redlist.--Ipigott (talk) 09:09, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
Yes, and mine for the ones who began programs in the 1990s. I just discovered a woman from Slovenia, while working on my "foundational" Romanian. For me, that is often how it works, I find one, which leads to others. I am absolutely amazed at the breadth of these women's fields. The obvious historians, sociologists and anthropologists are joined by literary scholars, philosophers, lawyers, and even in the case of Aili Nenola, the Finn I just finished, theologians and folklorists. Interdisciplinary indeed. Thanks for adding them to the list. SusunW (talk) 13:24, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
And a Sinologist, who would've thought? Flora Botton was fun for me. She shares a birthday with my favorite great aunt (who's only 6 months older than my mom). SusunW (talk) 18:23, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Question from Nadja1968 (15:36, 6 April 2022)

edit

Hello, I am just getting started! I want to create a page for a woman artist, Diane Esmond, 1910-1981. I see that I must first earn some credentials by editing some pages. Is that right? Also, will this process end in my being allowed to create a page for her? --Nadja1968 (talk) 15:36, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, Nadja1968, and welcome to Wikipedia. Diane Esmond looks like an interesting artist to write about. One way of gaining some basic experience in Wikipedia is with The Wikipedia Adventure. You will see I have also left a number of links on your talk page, some of which you might find useful. When you feel ready to start writing a draft on Esmond, you can do so in your user space by creating user:Nadja1968/Diane Esmond (just click on it to start the draft). You might also find it useful to look through our Ten simple rules for creating women's biographies. Let me know when you have created a first draft and I'll try to help you along. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 15:54, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
By the way, your copy edits look pretty good.--Ipigott (talk) 15:58, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
Hi Ipigott,
I wanted to add some edits to the "works" section of Liliane Atlan but editing seems to be blocked there.
Also, I had some formatting problems with Motti Lerner--I wanted to add a bibliographic reference but I can't get the same typeface as the reference above it. Any suggestions?
thank you,

how many edits do I have to do before I can create a page? --Nadja1968 (talk) 17:37, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

There are no rules about this. If you feel you are ready to create a draft, just go ahead as I explained above.--Ipigott (talk) 20:02, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

Question from Mary.fouladian on User:Mary.fouladian/sandbox (11:28, 8 April 2022)

edit

Hello. I appreciate some help here. I want to create a page for a journal.

I want to set a title page but I cannot create a page of my own choosing. My username is by default the name of the page --Mary.fouladian (talk) 11:28, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

  • Hi there, Mary.fouladian, and welcome to Wikipedia. It's not very clear from your question exactly what your problem is but if you wish, you can start a draft in your user space by writing user:Mary.fouladian/name of article in the Search Wikipedia box. I think nevertheless you should first gain some basic experience using the links I have left on your talk page. One easy way to start is through The Wikipedia Adventure. If these suggestions do not help, please let me know the name of the journal you want to write about and when and where it was first published. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 11:57, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
I see you have now already made a start. I suggest you copy your sandbox text to User:Mary.fouladian/Journal of Renewable Energy and Environment and add necessary references. These need to refer to secondary sources from journals, books, critical assessments, awards, etc., which provide detailed information about the publication.--Ipigott (talk) 12:06, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
You should also be aware of copyright violations. You cannot simply copy text you find on the internet. You must re-express everything in your own words.--Ipigott (talk) 12:09, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

today, we have another Ukraine day: Maks Levin DYK, expanding Kyiv Symphony Orchestra, and creating Anthony Robin Schneider, the bass who could be heard opening the singing in Beethoven's Ninth twice on 10 March 2022, live in Frankfurt, Germany, and recorded in Auckland, New Zealand. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:53, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, Gerda for sprinkling round a bit more happiness in these difficult times. Talking about music, you might be interested in the two Swedish opera singers I've just been writing about: Lilly Walleni and Magna Lykseth-Skogman, both triggered by Adam Cuerden's enhanced images.--Ipigott (talk) 16:12, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
I finally looked, and found the first too "old" for DYK, and even the second, but tried anyway, hoping for mercy. I am not happy with the sentence "studied in Bayreuth", - knowing that there's no conservatory there, but she will have been exposed to the festival and it's artists. I know it is like that in the source, but we should rephrase anyway. Do you have an idea? As long as no other place or teacher in Germany is given, we might want to avoid "studies" in Germany. Perhaps they are in the other sources? - I'll look again later, - there are more roles in gsl, and that she made recordings, and the exact years when she used which name on stage. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:55, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt: Thanks for the DYK nomination. I've rephrased the Bayreuth bit. If you are interested, I've also created Anna Bartels, Liva Järnefelt and Paula Lizell but am hoping Adam Cuerden will have time to improve the images for the last two. I was pleased to see there were over 8,000 page views of Germaine Bailac.--Ipigott (talk) 08:57, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for more women! I'll look. Things you probably can do without me: every opera should come with a composer, just last name for famous, full name for others, link to composer only when opera has no article (but better to write that article in the rare case). The bible for singers is gsl, and the standard formatting to that ref is now in Lykseth. You can follow it to the book and search for the others. No refs are needed in leads for things referenced in the body (so usually no ref in the lead). Opera has no "parts" but "roles". (German has "Partie", - that's a trap for me.) Debut and premiere are decent English words, no need to use French accents. - Looking forward to more! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:08, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt: Thanks for your advice. As you have probably noticed, whenever possible I draw quite heavily on Großes Sängerlexikon. I've been using it for years. It's generally correct but in some cases there are minor errors (especially in connection with early life and education) and many pages are missing from the online edition (unless there is another way of accessing it in full). However, as you call it the "bible", I am surprised you say that for every opera there needs to be a composer. That is certainly not the case with GSL; just look at the article on Anna Bartels. The very reason I started leaving out the composers of the more popular works was that GSL was not including them. Until recently I always used to include them and will now follow your advice and start doing so again. As for the inclusion of references in the lead, this is simply because I create all my articles in mainspace and on more than one occasion have been faced with prod-ing within minutes of starting an article if there were insufficient references. So I always make sure every new article has at least three good sources from the start. But if you now agree to taking them to DYK, I'll be more careful. (You would be surprised to see how often new article leads are tagged "citation needed" by reviewers even when the source is given in the body of the article.) The accents on debut and premiere are from my Firefox spelling checker. I'll ignore them.--Ipigott (talk) 09:58, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for explaining, and I can follow ;) - I do the same, creating in Main space, but - unless in emergency - I try to have a ref ready the normal position. - Composers: Readers of Großes Sängerlexikon are typically opera specialists who know that Puccini and Busoni created a Turandot, but for the interest of our mixed audience, I think many are helped if we add the famous Verdi to Il trovatore, telling at a glance "Italian repertoire" without relying on a reader recognizing the language of the title. This has been called pedantic, but I believe it's only fair. - Confronted with film titles, I'd have a hard time finding from which time and culture without a name of a producer or director. - I think I confused you a bit with the author of a baritone up for deletion where gsl was not yet used, both this morning, - sorry about that. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:10, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

Gerda Arendt: Anna Bartels, Liva Järnefelt and Paula Lizell have now been edited in accordance with your suggestions. Please let me know if you detect and other failings. I was unable to find Paula Lizell/Frödin in GSL. Is that because the page where she should be covered is not accessible online?--Ipigott (talk) 11:45, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

Thank you, - I have no time to look right now, but will. Could be that the gls page is not shown because it's not online. Sometimes Operissimo and/or Online Merker have the same information (and Bayreuth Festival, but only if the singer performed there, and not complete if early = before 1945). Don't say "failings", it's just improvements from good to very good. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:08, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for your reviewing

edit

Thank you for reviewing all or almost all of the pages I have recently created for the contest. If you have any suggestions for improvement, please let me know. And sorry for making you work so hard. --Dandilero (talk) 10:38, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

Dandilero: While I'm really impressed by the number of articles you have translated, although in general your translations are good you are not always careful enough at checking through the text. As a result, there are frequently symptoms of machine translation from Spanish, especially present instead of past tenses, male instead of female pronouns and a few very literal translations. Most of the translations seem to comply with the general requirements of the EN wiki although the notability of some is borderline. I have accepted most of them but there are two or three I thought I would leave for others to patrol. My advice for avoiding possible deletion is to choose articles which clearly list awards or critical acclaim, or which are supported by meaningful coverage in recognized sources (journals, newspapers, published books, critical assessments, etc.) As you probably know, BLPs are looked at more closely than the biographies of those who are no longer living. I hope you will not find this too discouraging. In any case, I look forward to many more. Happy editing! (By the way, apart from those translated by editors I know well, I look through nearly all the articles submitted to the contest.)--Ipigott (talk) 11:05, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for your advice, from now on I will try to improve on everything you have told me.
As for the notability, I will review and try to improve the articles. I always try to make it as similar as possible to the Spanish article, keeping references. But in some cases (I don't understand why) the editors of the Spanish Wikipedia don't use the most "reputable" media for the references and use other less known. Today I'm going to improve old articles instead of creating new ones. Dandilero (talk) 12:38, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
Dandilero I just noticed your comment to Ian when I came here to write him an update on another issue. Each language version of WP has different standards. What may be acceptable as a source on another language is not necessarily so here. In fact, as you have said above, I often find Spanish sources listed that either don't verify the information which they are citing, or don't meet en.wp's reliable source standards. If I am translating (usually I just rewrite the article from sources I can find), I always check to see if they meet en.wp's rules. SusunW (talk) 20:12, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for all that you do to make Wikipedia more gender-balanced, from writing articles to encouraging others to reviewing, and assessing articles. It is appreciated. CT55555 (talk) 14:17, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much, CT55555. I do all this because I enjoy it, especially as slowly but surely we can see improvements, not just in the statistics but in our coverage. It's good to see all the detailed articles about prominent women who until now have been ignored. Those created under our current focus on Gender Studies are a good example. And as I've said before, I'm equally impressed by the great work you've been doing yourself.--Ipigott (talk) 06:18, 15 April 2022 (UTC)

Lilly Walleni

edit

I think there's two stand-out images for her - the Daria and the Navarraisse in the article at present. Which do you like better? I think the Navarraise is the stronger expression - can't dislike a good mad scene - but the kneeling gives an odd look to her lower body in the dress. The Daria is a better generic image, but no-one performs (or even writes articles on) Daria - it's by Georges Marty - anymore. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 20:34, 19 April 2022 (UTC)

  • Adam Cuerden: The Daria image is really impressive. I don't think it matters too much that the opera is no longer performed. The quality of the image is already good. Do you think you will be able to enhance it further?--Ipigott (talk) 05:47, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Would you like me to make a list of the artists depicted in the archives we have? Might be some good ones. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 03:27, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

  • Adam Cuerden: Thanks. Looks good. I think such a list would be of interest to all the contributors to Women in Red. If you draw one up, I suggest you post it there but if you find any other opera singers, please let me know.--Ipigott (talk) 05:43, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
[https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Black_and_white_photographs_of_performers_at_Kungliga_operan has most of them. Some amazing costumes in there, though the men have more fun ones on the whole. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 11:40, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

I'm using number of photos as a proxy, but Magna Lykseth seems to have a notably high number of operas under her belt. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 11:46, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

Adam Cuerden: Lykseth looks good. I've found a good biographical source here. Which image(s) would you like to work on?--Ipigott (talk) 15:14, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
Okay. I've reviewed. If we presume File:Magna Lykseth, opera singer, undated portrait - SMV - GL173.tif is her natural hair, and that some very unnatural hair in some of them are wigs, then we can eliminate a few possibilities, and I don't like the fade at the bottom in that one.. File:Magna Lykseth in Tosca at Kungliga Operan 1912 - SMV - GL170.tif is an amazing pose, but the amount of damage on the face concerns me, so let's leave that for a secondary image. File:Magna Lykseth in Valkyrian at Kungliga Operan 1902 - SMV - GL157.tif has a lot of glow from the shield, but great costume. But there's one standout: not too damaged, closeup, good pose:

Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 15:24, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

Adam Cuerden: Let's go for Tristan. She was noted for her Wagnerian roles and it would be more suitable for illustrating her biography. She is also remembered for Tosca if you feel like working on that one too. I'll see if I can put something together tomorrow.--Ipigott (talk) 15:32, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
I added some more details in edits, but, yeah, I think the Tristan is the standout, and also the least damaged of the good-quality images, which is nice. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 15:35, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
This is very rough still, but File:Magna Lykseth in Tristan och Isolde at Kungliga Operan 1909 - SMV - GL164.jpg is a start finish. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 16:23, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
Great improvement!--Ipigott (talk) 20:06, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

If it helps, no:Magna Lykseth-Skogman seems the better of the two, and I speak a little Norwegian. Not much, but.... Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 20:40, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

Yes, that's how it looked to me too but the German biography I mentioned above is even better. When I "translate" articles from other Wikipedia versions, I hardly ever present a word-for-word translation. I look at the sources used in the existing articles and try to find new ones. I then write a new biography in the usual way, although many of the basic facts many closely resemble those in other versions. There are quite a few Danish/Norwegian words in Scottish. I come from Newcastle where the local dialect, including the pronounciation, draws heavily on the influence of Scandinavian sailors but my own fluency is mainly thanks to my wife who is Danish.--Ipigott (talk) 05:47, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
I think I just pick it up by way of having chosen as a teenager the most useless second language to become fluent in: Middle English by way of Sir Gawaine and the Green Knight. But if you're in Newcastle, let me know if you're ever up in Edinburgh. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 07:16, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, but I have no plans to return to Newcastle. I no longer have any relatives or friends there. From time to time we travel to London for the theatres, exhibitons, etc., but otherwise we keep to continental Europe.--Ipigott (talk) 08:40, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
Understood! Ah, well. Just Would be nice to talk shop, y'know? Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 08:48, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

Would you rather have the whole newspaper page? THAT should probably be strictly en-wiki only.

Adam Cuerden: I've made a start on this. As I don't think I'll have much more time to work on it today, you might like to add your image(s). I noted by the way that your Tristan image now appears twice in the Norwegian article.--Ipigott (talk) 11:59, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

Looks like I'll have to renominate her later. I have like 5 images on 4 supports, and it's not looking likely that's going to get fixed in time for her. This happens sometimes. Featured picture candidates sometimes just breaks. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 19:42, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

Also, I've extracted the Agnes Janson image, just want to wait to make sure we get consensus. Have a vague idea you asked me about something else, but I can't find it. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 20:29, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

Adam Cuerden: Glad to hear you are making progress with Agnes Janson. From the discussion on the WiR talk page, there seems to be agreement on the photographer. The other images I have mentioned: Liva Järnefelt which I've cropped as it's nominated for DYK, and [[Paula Lizell which still needs attention. Perhaps I should just crop that one too?--Ipigott (talk) 07:56, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
Give me a moment. Uploading Janson. Think I'm going to upload it locally, and then on Commons, because it's completely indisputably out of copyright in the US, and I could see Commons questioning the attribution at some point, although it seems pretty certain. Might hold off on nominating thigns for FPC for a little bit until things start passing, though. Looking like I'm going to have a whole raft of nominations fail, starting with Lykseth-Skogman. Cropsey is in no better shape, Il trovatore in worse shape, Carney at least has time to get the fifth, and Brannan isn't even getting voted on. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 11:35, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

Let's talk Lizell images. Here's ones I feel are a little more interesting:

The one in the article is fine, but these kind of show off her acting. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 12:05, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

Adam Cuerden: It seems to me that the first one would be good for the opera but less suitable for the biography. We could of course always include additional images in the biographies. But please go ahead with your own preferences which up to now have been pretty successful. I really don't want to cause any problems and am glad to see old Swedish opera singers are attracting new interest.--Ipigott (talk) 13:46, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
Might try to do both. Just need to make sure the one nominated is first. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 15:21, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

Let's look at images for her while we're at it. I'd say File:Liva Järnefelt in Carmen at Kungliga Operan 1914 - SMV - GJ052.tif is probably the easiest to restore. I also think we could probably do decent things with File:Liva Järnefelt, opera singer - SMV - NJ025.tif. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 12:15, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

Adam Cuerden: I like the Carmen image too but the second one would be more suitable for the biography.--Ipigott (talk) 13:48, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

Ottilie Sutro

edit

Greetings.! I have created an Article on Ottilie Sutro from the WiR list. However, later I found that already there is an Article Rose and Ottilie Sutro, which has information about Ottilie Sutro and her sister Rose Laura Sutro. Also there is a request for Article for Rose in the WiR list. This is to seek your guidance on whether these can be merged or redirected or the one I have created can be deleted?. Thank you.!Thirukannan (talk) 08:59, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

Thanks, Thirukannan, for bringing this to my attention. It's unfortunate you did not discover the other article until now. In my opinion, unless you are ready to expand Ottilie with substantial additional information about her life and works, it seems to me it would be best to add anything new from your biography to Rose and Ottille. Once you have done so, rather than deleting the article, you can simply replace the text with a redirect. Nevertheless, I suppose that ideally there should be separate biographies on each of the two sisters but this would require substantial additional work. So at this stage, I'll leave the decision up to you--Ipigott (talk) 09:30, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your valuable opinion.! There is also a similar issue in Teresa and Maria Milanollo. I do agree with you that there should be separate Article on each. I will try to work on it, and collect information from the reliable sources.! Thanks & regards, Thirukannan (talk) 10:53, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
Thirukannan: Yes, there are quite a few articles which group two or more members of a family relationship. In the case of husband and wife, editors have frequently made an effort to create a separate article on the woman but we have not been so active in the case of sisters. It would indeed be good if you could write biographies on each individual. Thanks by the way for all the other women's biographies you have created over the past couple of months. You are really making good headway.--Ipigott (talk) 11:08, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
@Thirukannan What a pity the article creator didn't think to add Redirects from the individual women's names. I've just added Rose Sutro, and checked that the Milanollos are both already redirected. PamD 13:36, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
@Ipigott, @ PamD
Thank you so much for your guidance and support.!

Found another opera singer for you. Tons of photographs - there's a lovely one of her as Olympia, though I'd say File:Andrejeva von Skilondz in Lakmé at Kungliga Operan 1916 - SMV - NS048.tif wins out slightly for those who don't get the reference. Adam Cuerden (talk) 09:40, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Adam Cuerden: The EN article is Adelaide von Skilondz.--Ipigott (talk) 09:50, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Ah. Well, there we are. Can at least update her image, though I think I'll hold off on restoring her until after Ukraine's liberated. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 10:19, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Let's not bring past opera singers into current politics. I think it would be great to have her featured on the main page, just to show how inclusive we are. As she's already on Adelaide von Skilondz, you could at least tidy up the borders. Alternatively you might consider improving File:Adelaide Andrejewa Skilondz Ord och bild 1916.jpg which is perhaps more suitable as a lead image.--Ipigott (talk) 10:32, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
You might be right. It just feels weird to work on Russian cultural heritage things right now. I'll at least neaten up the image. How about File:Andrejeva von Skilondz, opera singer - SMV - NS054.tif and see how many people we can make jealous of that stunning dress?

  • I don't love the fadeout at the bottom. It seems a bit crude. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 20:45, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
It's just that I think that if possible a lead image should clearly depict the face of the subject. But I'll leave the choice up to you.--Ipigott (talk) 05:39, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
  • Remind me to get back to her, but think I might clear my head before trying to choose one. Feeling more difficult than it should. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 15:54, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

Few more

edit
Anna Bartels/Anna Fernqvist - Opera singer, I presume one is her married name.
Anna Tropp - dancer, but performed in operas with ballets.
Anna Lagergren - opera singer
Anna Oscàr - opera singer

That's just from the first page of results. There's about 18 pages, so I'd imagine there's going to be plenty of options out there. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 11:39, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Of the above, I can probably put something together on Anna Bartels. As she's in Wikidata as Anna Bartels (Q26240336), I'm surprised she does not appear on the WiR redlists for Sweden and Swedish actresses. There might be similar problems with others on the list. Perhaps Tagishsimon can look into it.--Ipigott (talk) 13:59, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Adam Cuerden: Of the opera singers listed below, in addition to Anna Bartels, I think I will create biographies on Liva Järnefelt and Paula Lizell. Some of the dancers also deserve biographies but I'll leave them until later.--Ipigott (talk) 06:58, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
Not sure which is the best photo of Bartels. The Merry Wives one is good, but has a lot of light bleed, and her face is way out of focus. I like the Musette one, and it'll focus more if I crop the card, but.... there's no standout. I guess the Musette one has the advantage of not cropping her feet, which a lot of them do. There is a closeup, File:Anna Bartels, opera singer - SMV - NB048.tif, but it's A. in a wig, and B. very poorly documented. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.7% of all FPs 16:00, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

Images of female singers and dancers at the Royal Swedish Opera

edit

These are the women who are included in Category:Black and white photographs of performers at Kungliga operan on Commons, each with the number of images.

Trying to keep up. Had to dig through half of Commons recently to deal with a MediaViewer bug, so found a bunch of old stuff of mine I'm trying to clear out a bit. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 09:15, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

Question from Nadja1968 (01:58, 28 April 2022)

edit

Hi Ipigott, I have a couple of questions: 1. I created the Diane Esmond page. Please review it and comment. when will it be published? I also need to link her page to taht of her teacher, Edouard MacAvoy. I also included a citation (#1) which, however, does not show up in the draft! What can I do to fix this? 2. I added a bibliographic reference to the entry for Motti Lerner, but the typeface on my entry is different from the first one. How to I change this? thank you, Nadja --Nadja1968 (talk) 01:59, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, Nadja1968. I'm afraid your page on Diane Esmond cannot be published as it is a copy violation of this biography. You can draw on information from other websites but you cannot simply copy the text you find. I suggest you delete the current text and start again, re-expressing everything in your own words. You should also try to find at least three valid sources which provide detailed information on the subject. Please see these Ten Simple Rules for assistance and let me know when I can review your new version. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 07:57, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
Hi Ipigott,
thank you for your help! The text I used is not a copy violation since I am also the author of the website and all the text on it. I do not wish to assert copyright of my text and consider it to be in the public domain. It is based on interviews I conducted with the artist's son. However I am happy to change some of the sentences around if this is absolutely necessary! Please let me know.
I am very eager to make this wonderful painter better known. Aside from the reviews I have been able to find, the only other mentions are in the book I footnoted (footnote 1) and the online article by Marc Masurovsky to which I provided a link.
˜˜˜˜ Nadja1968 (talk) 11:21, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
Nadja1968: I can see we are running into quite a few problems here. If you wish to make you web article widely accessible, you should use and appropriate Creative Commons license. It's OK for you to tell me here you wrote the article but you cannot be identified from your user name. We also strongly discourage articles which are based on personal relationships, such as those you have had with the artist's son. Instead you should build the article on independent sources. I'm tied up now but will get back to you later.--Ipigott (talk) 15:25, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

Question from Nadja1968 on Liliane Atlan (10:49, 28 April 2022)

edit

Hi, One more question on Liliane Atlan. I want to add that her works are influenced by Antonin Artaud's "Theatre of cruelty" (I have a published source for this). Right now I am blocked from editing this page. ˜˜˜˜ --Nadja1968 (talk) 10:49, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

  • Nadja1968: Let's sort things out one at a time. It's now important you follow my suggestions on Diane Esmond, otherwise I will have to delete the page for copy violation. Unless you follow normal Wikipedia standards, you are likely to be blocked from editing other pages. Let me know when I can take a new look at Diane Esmond.--Ipigott (talk) 11:05, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

Question from Nadja1968 (14:13, 28 April 2022)

edit

Hi Ipigott, I have made some changes in the Diane Esmond entry. The photo is from 1950, is 72 years enough for it to be out of copyright? thank you, Nadja47 ˜˜˜˜ --Nadja1968 (talk) 14:13, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

Question from Nadja1968 (16:52, 28 April 2022)

edit

Dear Ipigott, In a couple of weeks I have an appointment with the local librarian who has agreed to help me with the Diane Esmond page. So let's just leave it for now, and I'll get back to you later. Thank you, ˜˜˜˜ --Nadja1968 (talk) 16:52, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

Nadja1968: That sounds like a very reasonable way of proceeding. I would be happy to review the page you develop with your librarian when it is ready.--Ipigott (talk) 05:53, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

The article List of women innovators and inventors by country has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unreferenced, indiscriminate list that mixes scientists (e.g. Marguerite Perey), inventors (e.g. Jamie Lee Curtis), mathematicians (e.g. Hypatia), and some other occupations. Similar to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of women inventors.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 22:00, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Germaine Bailac

edit

On 30 April 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Germaine Bailac, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the French mezzo-soprano Germaine Bailac (pictured) played the title role in Bizet's Carmen at least 3,000 times? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Germaine Bailac. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Germaine Bailac), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
