In my work at the Teahouse and Article for creation, I deal with new users a lot. As I've found, a lot of our editors are readers who just saw an article that they wanted to fix, or wanted to make an article where they saw a need. I'd say most editors started out as readers.
My advice to you is simply to, once in a while, take a break from your labors and get absorbed reading an article. Wikipedia is famous for inspiring long, interconnected reading sessions by way of wikilinks - there's even a game where you have to link two random articles just by clicking links.
If you're having a dispute with someone, go take a walk, but if you don't want to do that, just take a Wikiwalk. Browse a random article, and if you see something interesting, click on it. Pretty soon, you'll find yourself engrossed in something you didn't even know existed an hour ago.
