imdb
When did it switch to being "editable by anyone" (see here)? I have been a member nearly 20 years and certain parts of it always have been this way.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 23:35, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Vchimpanzee: Not sure, really. I could be mis-remembering, but it seems like they used to be more reliable and became less so, maybe coincident with the changes where they moved some stuff to IMDBPro, added all the aggressive ad backgrounds and popups, etc. I think I remember submitting fixes that took forever to get approved (or never did) but now it seems like it's easy to get changes through (I forget what the structure is (whether it's reputation-based, or peer-review or what) because I don't bother any more – perhaps you can elaborate if you know). WT:RSN Archive 3 has pointers to discussions through 2010. WP:RSN Archive 1 is saying it was unreliable in 2007, so maybe it was always so, and cites to it were just not as well patrolled until more recently. {{IMDb warn}} was created in 2008. Heck, maybe I just mistakenly cited it myself until I knew better. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 00:04, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
- I don't know much about imdb. I have reviewed close to 1000 movies and I have submitted trivia and asked for corrections. In some cases I had to make the corrections myself, which causes me to doubt the reliability. But there were certain parts of the site I assumed were always reliable because the information came from the companies. That changed when I was asked to submit the information for a movie that wasn't there and they made a mess of it because somehow I didn't do it right. But as I do here, I looked for sources that seemed reliable.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 16:54, 4 January 2020 (UTC)

Question
You reverted my edits which I did in Mark Zuckerberg, Mukesh Ambani and Jimmy Wales.Why?Ankitroy1997 (talk) 14:05, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Ankitroy1997: For the reasons stated in the edit summaries. Your stated reason for removal of degrees from the education parm of infoboxes is incorrect. The purpose of an infobox is to summarize important characteristics of the subject from the article. If the educational institution belongs in the infobox (which it does), leaving off the degree is leaving off half the story. It would be like leaving the date of a marriage off, or leaving off the place of birth while showing the date. The same applies to the dates that you removed from the Zuckerberg article. Your intent here is obviously not to improve the project, but instead to make a WP:POINT, which is wrong on several levels. Several editors have been extremely patient with you. You're not fooling anyone by claiming to be a new editor – your behavior makes it clear. Please stop now. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 14:18, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

You are jealou* of Indians. You blo*dy basta*d fu*k off.223.230.172.219 (talk) 20:20, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
- You are saying that I'm partial but not you are partial. What a wonderful explanation degrees should not be removed from Jimmy Wales article's bio infobox but in Shamsheer Vayalil it can be removed from bio infobox. This is because Jimmy Wales is not Indian he is citizen of USA so partiality can be shown. Is this your policy? I'm sorry to say this is discrimination. You know what one day India will have separate wikipedia which will be created and edited by Indians only. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 223.230.172.219 (talk) 20:38, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
- I did no such thing. I've now spent a bunch more time and documented my edits and the reasons for them at Talk:Shamsheer Vayalil#My edits. Not that it matters any more. I'm officially notifying you, based on the history of your behavior and personal attack above, and the edit to my user page, that you are prohibited from making further edits or additions to any of my user or talk pages indefinitely. This applies to user Ankitroy1997 as well as any of the Bharti Airtel IP addresses that geolocate to Patna, Bihar, including, but not limited to, 223.230.128.0/18 and 106.207.32.0/19, and any other accounts or IP addresses that may be used by the group of editors in question. Congratulations – I don't think I've ever had to do this in my 12 years here. I will also ask administrators to do whatever else they feel is necessary to address the ongoing disruption. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 23:45, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

Why would you call Loose Pulley Junction a "fictional populated place"? It has a GNIS entry and appears on several maps. Magnolia677 (talk) 21:37, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Magnolia677: It was based on the explanation for the naming I gave in the original article (and the source), though I guess the place itself is not fictional, and I really meant to say that it was not an official name. I note I edited the MILW article just before that, and it probably came up in relation to that. I wish I could come up with a good explanation for why I created the article, or felt that the cited forum posts were reliable – I can't defend them, though I think the story about the naming is likely correct. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 23:49, 27 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi, User:AlanM1 how are you? my friend is a Turkish writer famous he writes with popular newspaper and he has 2 books in amazon and kobo and other websites can you create a page about him? I will give you the references as you like --Ahmadqatari (talk) 09:12, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Ahmadqatari: Hi. Who is your friend? Creating articles from scratch is not something I do. It's one of the most difficult things to do well on Wikipedia, and quite time-consuming. I will say that, unless those two books were very well- (or poorly-) received and reviewed by several, reliable sources, independent of the author, publisher, friends, etc., it would not be accepted. Also see WP:PROUD, describing why you might not want to create such an article for your friend.
- If you'll let me know who it is, and provide the references, I can give you my opinion on whether such an article might be acceptable (i.e., if he seems to be notable for Wikipedia's purpose). You might also visit the Teahouse (if you haven't already) and read responses to similar questions regarding new articles. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 21:01, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

- @Ahmadqatari: I think that both Yenişehirlioğlu and al-Nafisi are probably notable and articles would be accepted if done properly. Translation from the arwiki articles is probably the way to go, though you'll have an easier time of it if you can find some English sources (there seems to be enough coverage in English of al-Nafisi at least). After reading WP:YFA and WP:TRANSLATE, if you want to tackle it, I definitely recommend using WP:AFC to get the benefit of other editors' review and assistance. I'll note that Myxomatosis57 is a currently active Turkish-speaker listed at WP:TRLA, who may be willing to help (they should see the alert that I mentioned them and contact us here; if not, after a few days, drop a message at their talk page). - @Ahmadqatari: There's nothing stopping you from editing here and I don't have any power to allow or prevent it anyway. Follow the process outlined in WP:YFA and WP:AFC to create and then submit your article for review, improvement, and potential publishing to the main article namespace. If that's too much, you can just add entries in the right categories at WP:Requested articles and someone may eventually come along to create them. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 23:01, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

- @Ahmadqatari: Creating the two articles above in Draft space was the right thing to do, as they are not yet ready to be mainspace articles, quality-wise. That is why I suggested the AFC process. Try having a look at articles here for other similar people. There is a certain layout of sections that is typical. More importantly, it needs to read like an encyclopedia article. The prose should consist of complete, grammatical sentences with correct spelling and punctuation. The Yenishehiroglu page is really not an article at all – just a list of references. I've moved it back to Draft space so it can be improved, if not by you, perhaps by someone who might be able to help you. I didn't do so with Alnefisi, because it is more complete, but someone else may do so, as it needs plenty of work – specifics that may have been given to you by those who do such things in the AFC process. As far as the copyright violation articles that you created and have been, or will be, deleted, please stop and read the notices on your talk page. Copyright violation is a serious offense, subjects the Wikimedia Foundation to potential legal action, putting everyone's work in danger, and simply can not be allowed. Those who do it, especially after being notified, cannot be allowed to continue editing here. Thanks for listening. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 14:05, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

Could you please explain...
WRT [1] could you please explain what an "unfit" url is? Geo Swan (talk) 19:23, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
- You also changed the accessdate fields of {{cite}} templates, from when they were first accessed to the current day. I have never seen anyone do that before, in the 12-13 years since they were introduced. Are you sure that this is what you meant to do? Geo Swan (talk) 19:26, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Geo Swan: Hi. If you go to the original URL, you'll see why – it's now a sexual escort site. The
|access-date=
is updated if I have verified the information in the cite against the part of the article that it is citing. Both are per the {{Cite}} docs. As to whether I updated the date incorrectly, it's certainly possible – that was a few thousand edits ago. Is there a discrepancy between the cites and the material? Cheers. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 21:24, 20 February 2020 (UTC)- You are correct that Siku News is now a sexual escort site. I used webcitation.org to archive that url. Here is something strange. The webcitation.org links to Siku News don't work anymore, but some of the other webcitation.org links do work.
- WRT access-date, {{cite}} unhelpfully says "the date the url was accessed", without saying whether it should be the date it was first accessed, or the date it was last accessed.
I suggest that, when a URL is archived, and the archive-date field is filled, this is a sufficient for the date of last access, even if it is not the date of last access. I suggest the date of first access is the most important date. Urls to newspaper sites generally link to a page that has a single article on it. Sometime a newspaper url will be to something like "this week's top stories, this month's top stories, or this year's top stories. Lots of non-news sites do something like this.
When you go and try to add an archive link for a URL like that an access-date to the date the URL was added as a reference is the important date. The person adding the archive link can pick the archive closest to the access-date, and examine it to verify it supports what the reference was put there to substantiate.
I have done this dozens of times.
If a {{cite}}'s accessdate field is empty, I add the current date, when I double-check the ref.
As to the value of recording the date when an archive is found to have gone stale - hmm. If this is an important date to record maybe it needs a brand new field?
- Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 01:03, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Geo Swan: I was referring to this in the doc:
access-date: Full date when the content pointed to by url was last verified to support the text in the article;
, which is the process that I usually follow. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 01:42, 21 February 2020 (UTC)- Later in that paragraph, too:
Note that access-date is the date that the URL was found to be working and to support the text being cited.
—[AlanM1(talk)]— 01:44, 21 February 2020 (UTC)- Thanks for taking the time to give my questions serious consideration. Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 17:54, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

Teahouse Hosts
Hi Alan. I've been having a bit of a tidy up of all the inactive Hosts listed at the Teahouse, and I spotted that back in November (after a bit of a wobble by Interstellarity, I think) you added yourself to the 'Featured Host' list. I have no problem with that as you have been pretty active, for which we're all grateful. However, I've only just spotted that you never actually added yourself to the main Host list, which you can see at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Hosts. So, would you like to do that please? Just click the 'become a host!' button in the Teahouse header, or go to Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host start to create a new host profile for yourself there. Many thanks, Nick Moyes (talk) 23:45, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

- Ah yes I remember now. It was a bit maddening having them fussing about the featured Editor list, seeing them unilaterally add themselves, then moments later decide they didn't want to, so I think you got volunteered. No worries. Thanks for doing that, and keep up the good work. Nick Moyes (talk) 23:57, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Asian Business Leadership Forum
Hello AlanM1,
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Asian Business Leadership Forum for deletion, because it seems to be promotional, rather than an encyclopedia article.
If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

(Question) Draft:Sadaharu Yagi for submission
Hi AlanM1. I am from Teahouse regarding the article of Draft:Sadaharu Yagi. I was just advised to write on the user talk page instead of continuing it on Teahouse page. I would like to ask you what exactly I should do to get the draft article accepted, as I am not experienced and not clear what the issue here is. One user kindly mentioned that the issue is a tag of undisclosed payments from the past. Would it be the reason why the currently submitted draft is still considered “advertisement” and not having neutral point of view? If so, could you please advise me what I need to change in the article before making another re-submission? Thank you! 75.83.94.230 (talk) 15:47, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

WP doesn't have an article for a band named "MAZE", and I can't find evidence of a song name "Psycho" by them.I.e., neither the band/author/YouTuber/whatever, nor that song associated with them, were found in a Google search, so I believed neither is notable and removed the entry. If you have a reliable source that shows otherwise, please provide it. We don't have to list every jingle/meme/few-seconds-of-video posted to social media platforms that nobody will remember in a year or less, even if a million people saw it. Sukant Kadam
Hi,
I am Sukant Kadam International Para Badminton athlete. Will you help me in completion of article and page of Sukant Kadam (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukant_Kadam). I seen you proposed for deletion of it. If you can guide me to correct if there is any mistake I will be very happy.
Thank you!
Sukant Kadam (talk) 05:01, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Sukant9993
- @Sukant9993: I proposed deletion because it appeared that three of the four sources were written by you. That appears to have been incorrect, and another editor (correctly) withdrew the deletion, which I would have done as well, had I known. I did some work on the article earlier, fixing various issues and leaving a couple of requests for clarification. Please have a look. It's really not my field of interest or knowledge, so there isn't much more I can do for it. Hopefully, others will take interest and work on it over time. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 06:04, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the work on it. I added more clarification and information. Will you please tell me about which sources are written by? what is the meaning of proposed deletion means?
- Thanks again!
- Sukant Kadam (talk) 06:49, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Sukant9993
- @Sukant9993: If you look at the version of the page at that time (Special:Permalink/948687071), references 1, 3, and 4 all listed you as the author (incorrectly). That is why I proposed deletion of the article – because the references appeared to not be independent, which is one of the requirements for notability. The references have been corrected and the proposal for deletion has been removed. You might want to have a look at WP:EASYREFBEGIN, as well as those corrected references, for information on how to cite references. Also, perhaps you would confirm (or correct) the translation of the title of reference 3 at the current version of the article – "शासन धनणणय क्रमांकः खेआक्ष 1517/प्र.क्र.151/क्रीयुसे-2", which seemed to be the correct title of the document and Google Translate translated to "Govt. Establishment Number: Kheaxa 1517 / Q.151 / Creuse-2". —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 09:13, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
- @AlanM1: Thanks for removing the deletion proposal. I have corrected the reference 3 as you suggested.
- Sukant Kadam (talk) 11:12, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Sukant9993
- @Sukant9993: What I meant was, is the English translation of the document title correct? If it is, then it was correct as I wrote it, with the original Marathi title in the
|title=
parameter and the English translation in the|trans-title=
parameter. If the English translation is not correct, I just meant you should correct the|trans-title=
parameter with the correct English translation. Cheers. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 11:19, 3 April 2020 (UTC) - Pinging Sukant9993 —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 12:07, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

- @AlanM1: Thanks for explaining. I have corrected it. Please have a look. There is one more thing I want to discuss with you that what is the meaning of this message ( This article is an autobiography or has been extensively edited by the subject or by someone connected to the subject. It may need editing to conform to Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy. There may be relevant discussion on the talk page. ) how to resolve this?
- Thank you.Sukant Kadam (talk) 12:49, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Sukant9993
- @Sukant9993: Well, it's true, since you are the subject of the article and have created it and contributed most of the material. As others have mentioned, and provided links to things like WP:PROUD, WP:AUTO, and WP:COI. It's not really something I'm familiar with, so I can only surmise that, at a point some time from now, if other editors who are not related to or prompted by you, choose to expand the article substantially, the case could be made that it is largely independent and no longer needs the tag. I'm afraid that's about all I can suggest – give it some time. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 13:18, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

AlanM1, I had 2 accounts before. One I retired (Sayouloveme) and one when I got blocked (Combo Panda) because I wasn't here to expand wikipedia. (I was) I should had said I have school. Robloxloverandminecraftlover (talk) 16:58, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
- I am concerned that Roblox has started this new account, as under User:Combo Panda was indef blocked in January for insulting other editors, appealed, appeal denied. So far, all seen from Roblox is creation of a User page and a couple of queries at Teahouse. David notMD (talk) 20:31, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
