Well, I'm currently studying the Yapparungalakkarikai, and in the process I happened to notice that the reference was in the commentary rather than in the text itself. It's borne out by the Madras Tamil Lexicon's entry for "kunakankiyam". If you look at the online version (romanised), the reference it gives is "karikai, payiravurai"(i.e. karikai, commentary on the payiram section). I should add that it's not really a major issue - I just thought you might be interested in knowing. -- Arvind (talk) 22:06, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Seven wonders of India

edit

Dear Dinesh Kannambadi,

We have corresponded through these pages in the past. I find that Amar has not been editing the Karnataka pages. Who is looking after the pages for value editing?

I have created an article on Seven Wonders of India which includes two of our Karnataka heritage sites. May I request you to edit/ wikify the article and also introduce the photos of all the seven wonders from the interlinked wikipages. I have tried to do it since morning (sitting in San diego I have all the time in the world to browse wiki pages)but have not been able to do it. The article has two different spellings, Kavichakravarti and Kavichakravarthi for the same phrase ("emperor among poets"). I can't tell from references which spelling is more appropriate for the content. -- Michael Devore (talk) 20:07, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, DNK!

You have written the aritcle on Kadamba Dynasty. Some one had created a page on Kadamba tree and called it a mythical tree, which is not correct. Carnatic Music

edit

Hi! DNK, You have been an ardent and committed contributor/editor of the articles on Carnatic Music (Karnataka Sangeetha). I came across an excellent biography titled 'MS - A Life in Music" by T.J.S George-ISBN 81-7223-527-5 published by Pubishers -HarperCollinsIndia (absorbing reading), which has not been referenced in any of the articles on Carnatic Music. The book is worth absorbing reading. Some of the leading names are also missing such as Veena Dhanam, Bangalore Nagarathnamma, N.C.Vasanthakokilam, etc (Among the famous women vocalists). You may find the book interesting and informative to exapand the articles on Carnatic Music. It may also be a good idea to write a seperate article on the meanings of all Carnatic music terminology for the understaning of non southindian readers of the world.--Nvvchar (talk) 14:10, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Recent changes to articles and abuse by Special:Contributions/218.248.1.194

edit

Please consider this note a head's-up on a recent spate of articles changes and abusive talk page remarks by an apparent single-purpose IP account Special:Contributions/218.248.1.194 to Kannada-related articles. Those abused in the remarks include User:Dineshkannambadi, User:Sarvagnya, User:KNM, and User:Amarrg, per [1]. Additional abusive remarks and edit summaries directed to Dineshkannambadi are to be found in the IP's history log.

While I can revert the abusive talk page remarks, the IP's contribution history also shows a string of changes to multiple Indian history articles. Given the circumstances, it appears that these changes are of questionable merit. Unfortunately, I am not qualified on the topic content to determine if any of the other changes are correct. Accordingly, I am posting to the talk pages of the editors referenced by the IP so that you can collectively or individually take any actions on the change articles, talk pages, or the IP account that you think appropriate. -- Michael Devore (talk) 03:21, 20 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi! KNM, Thanks for the congratulatory message.

I have almost completed two more articles, one titled " Architectural legacy of Karnataka" tracing from Kadamba period to the present which covers all schools of architecture (Tibetan, Church, Neo Dravidian and Sikh architectre also included) and another on Mutts in Karnataka. In the first article I have substantially used material from your very remarkably well done FA articles on architecture of Hoysala, Chalukaya and other tempels including photos (I hope there are no issues on this aspect) and supplemented with more info and photos. During my recent visit to Bangalore I bought a very informative CD (valued Rs 500) on "EPIGRAPHIA CARNATICA" prepared by ICHR Southern Regional Cetre, Bangalore, which should provide me more info on the subject of my article. In the second article, I am still collecting info on Lingayat and Vokkaliga mutts. If you have any references to suggest please let me know.Nvvchar (talk) 06:50, 31 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Encyclopaedia and Encyclopedia in Literature in the Hoysala Empire

edit

Encyclopaedia and Encyclopedia are both common in British English, based on my searches and reading of reference materials, including several Wikipedia comments. An editor might want to use Encyclopedia so as to keep the spelling consistent with both American and British English usage, and perhaps be a bit neater. However, since Encyclopaedia remains relatively common in British English, it seems to me that this ought to be primary author's choice.

For the article Literature in the Hoysala Empire, the two spelling variations are a moot point. The reference books use the Encyclopaedia spelling, as clearly confirmed by an ISBN lookup at several different library and book-seller locations. Even if the original titles used the ash and were anglicized, "ae" (not "e") is generally considered an acceptable modern English spelling substitute. Based upon the book listings, Redtigerxyz was mistaken in editing the book reference titles to use the Encyclopedia spelling. You can revert the changes as being in error or, if you prefer, I will do so. -- Michael Devore (talk) 20:06, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Commons categories

edit

Thanks for your message. A photo or gallery page is placed in a category by adding the text [[Category:Temples of Karnataka]] (or whichever category you want) to the bottom of the photo/gallery page. See Commons:Categories for full details.

You should make sure that categories only contain appropriate content. By that, I mean it would be OK to put the Triprantaka Temple gallery into the Temples of Karnataka category, but it would be inappropriate to place the Belur gallery there because Belur is a town, not a temple of Karnataka.

Karnataka is the top level category for everything to do with Karnataka, including the temples, so you should be able to find everything you need in there.

The King, king business is pretty straightforward. The Manual of Style says here: When used as titles (that is, followed by a name), items such as president, king and emperor start with a capital letter: President Clinton, not president Clinton. On the other hand, it says: When used generically, such items are in lower case: De Gaulle was a French president and Louis XVI was a French king. By the way, I posted a question on the article's talk page about a place I got stuck, and I need your help to sort it out. Finetooth (talk) 03:44, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Dinesh. Some time back an editor has added "Manodharma Sangeetham" to Improvisation Section of Carnatic Music without giving English meaning. Hi Dinesh, since you've raised several kingdoms of southern India to FA status, how about listing them as featured topics WP:FT? =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:13, 6 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

History of Tamil Nadu, is one option, sine you need to get a "main topic" featured first. =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:55, 6 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
History of Karnataka is not a FA. Therefore it cannot be a FT. For a featured topic, a main topic must be featured. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:14, 6 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Look it it this way. If, say I get History of Kanpur, Geography of Kanpur, and Climate of Kanpur featured, it cannot be a FT. Why? Because Kanpur is not featured. Similarly you need to get Middle Kingdoms of India featured. Alternatively, if you can get another Hoysala topic featured you can bag a FT: Hoysala Empire (main) , Literature of Hoysala, and Hoysala article 3. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:39, 6 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm having second thoughts. Yesterday I ate at my favorite Pakistani/Indian restaurant, and the owners were very impressed that I had worked on Indian literature articles ... it would be nice to have something on my userpage that gives me something to talk about with my Indian friends! I have a question: was the work I did on our last collaboration worth a share of the credit for the FA as a co-nominator, do you think? Sorry, that wasn't clear ... I mean, if I did the same amount of work on this article as I did on our last collaboration, could I get co-nom credit? If not, is there something more I could do to earn that credit? - Dan Dank55 (send/receive) 16:19, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
No, I don't need anything for Literature in the Hoysala Empire ... you already gave me a nice barnstar (see User:Dank55/Shiny_things). Michael Devore does do a lot of copyediting ... people will check how many edits they made to the article at FAC, so it's probably not a good idea to offer someone a FAC co-nom unless they do a lot of work on the particular article you're nominating, but yes, if Michael or anyone else makes a lot of edits to an article, and if their work is important and even essential, absolutely! It's okay to offer Michael a co-nom for your next article (in which case, I wouldn't want to ask to be a co-nom.) - Dan Dank55 (send/receive) 00:18, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, there's absolutely no need to feel guilty; different people have wildly different standards for what it takes to be a co-nominator. Malleus Fatuorum and I copyedited History of timekeeping devices at FAC, which already had 7 co-nominators, and they liked our contributions so much that they offered us co-noms too! (We declined.) Other people feel strongly that their name alone should be on the nomination since they did most of the work. I am always encouraging people to work together and share credit, because that's how professional writing actually gets done (even if publishers like to hype the writer as the "star", so you often see just one name on a book cover or magazine article). It's completely up to you. My personal standard is that someone shouldn't ask for co-nom credit for doing a just few things, but I typically make a lot of edits when I collaborate; I know AP Stylebook and much of TCMOS, which reflects professional writing standards in the US; I know guidelines and policies, including WP's style guidelines; and I am familiar with FAC. So ... I don't mind asking, but it's up to you. (Feel free to reply here; I'm watchlisting) - Dan Dank55 (send/receive) 00:25, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Kannada literature in the Western Chalukya Empire

edit

Amazing work with Kannada literature in the Western Chalukya Empire, Dinesh. I learnt so much from that article. I have a few suggestions for improvement below.

  • While I understand that there's a need to give the historical context of the powers in throne at various points in time (given the subject), you should consider separating those into background sections separate from those that talk about the literature itself. For example the text below, though completely relevant to the article, doesn't gel with the text following it in the same para (there is an abrupt change in flow). Nor does it fit the section title.

{{cquote|The 11th century witnessed intense competition between the Western Chalukyas and their arch-rivals, the Cholas of Tanjore. The contemporaneous Eastern Chalukya Dynasty of Vengi, cousins of the Western Chalukyas, became increasingly influenced by the Cholas through their marital ties.[67] According to Kannada scholar R. Narasimhacharya, despite some important contributions, literary development may have suffered during this period because of Chola invasions into Kannada lands.[68]}

  • The text in the lead should be sharpened to focus more on the literature and grouping the story about the empires to one para.
  • The article has a lot of content. In the interest of summary style, the sections need to be condensed with the original text moved to separate main articles.
  • Do we need to give context in parentheses to the extent of explaining that Karna was a half-brother of Arjuna? It'll definitely help the uninitiated, but they can always look the linked articles, right? Similarly, in one instance, you explain who Shaivites are, and later you explain who Shaiva Brahmins are. This adds to the already lengthy article.
  • Doesn't it merit a mention that the Veerashaiva movement and the emphasis on using native metre and vocabulary has a similarity with the movement of Azhwars and Nayanmars?

I leave it to your discretion on this. If and when you do the summarisation, please drop me a note. I'll probably do some copyediting. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:11, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

On a related note, I recommend reverting the recent edit which changed the references to use a scroll area. This behavior is prohibited by the Manual of Style (see MOS:SCROLL). I suspect that if an editor who was a stickler for MoS style in featured articles saw it, the existing FA Chennai would be changed as well (it probably only has scrollable references because it is an older featured article that predates the MoS requirement.) -- Michael Devore (talk) 09:46, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

On a quick read-through of the entire article, it looks like you've really improved it quite a lot over the past two weeks. I would still like to get in a couple more longer editing sessions, probably with talk page feedback to you, though. -- Michael Devore (talk) 08:45, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Chandrayaan-1

edit

Dear Dinesh, I appreciate your contribution to Chandrayaan-1 article. I didnt intend in pin pointing some one by mentioning regionalism. just felt bad when important info of Satish Dhawan Space center, Sriharikota was not mentioned at all in Intro para while other info have been mentioned. Carry on your good work. Thnx Indianprithvi (talk) 15:36, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Dinesh,

Someone has modified ur sentence to "The ISRO chief scientist Mylswamy Annadurai was identified as the project director and mission leader". Im not sure on the authenticity of this sentence, but it was ambigious so I modified it to "The ISRO chief scientist Mylswamy Annadurai was the Project Director for this mission." Request you to Review it and make this WP more readable, as its read by international community.

Also the sentence "Chandrayaan in many languages roughly means" doesnt sound good. Plz modify it to say "Chandrayaan in Sanskrit means moon-craft or moon vehicle" like that whatever is more accurate

As its important article in presenting our nation, so we shud present confidence rather than ambigous things.

Thnx, Indianprithvi (talk) 09:04, 24 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

For the next few weeks, this article will receive numerous hits. I suggest we wait for the euphoria to settle, when it will be easy to copy edit the article and maintain its stability. Right now, no matter how many citations we provide, it will be vandalised repeatedly. I suggest we create a section "Notable scientists" at the bottom and completely remove the lines mentioning the two scientists currently in the lead. There must be at least a dozen important men involved in the project whose names we can get out of the Chandrayaan main web page or somewhere.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 12:08, 24 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Vithoba: Failed FAC

edit

Would you please look at the article and guide me what I should do next? Also do you know any efficient peer reviewers (except yourself of course), who can point more faults? I need someone who has the patience to go line by line through the article and detect any "lack of coherence or topic sentences", which was a major factor in the failed FAC. --Redtigerxyz (talk) 14:56, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Currently, there seems to be a real shortage of copy editors, the existing good ones generally tied down by too many projects. Sometimes, when readers find it difficult to understand an invloved topic, they generalise it as lack of coherence. Indian religion related articles are the best examples of difficult topics. User:Nvvchar is an user who seems to have good knowledge of Hinduism related topics and he seems to often write DYK articles on Sanskrit related topics. If he is free and interested, he can guide you regarding clarifications, topic sentences and such.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 15:14, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Copyedits

edit

I think I'll have time later tonight to invest in an involved copyediting session on Kannada literature in the Western Chalukya Empire. It will probably be spread out over several hours, but I'll keep each edit to a single sentence, so you can more easily revert or rework any problems you have with the changes. -- Michael Devore (talk) 23:58, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

In the mainstream paragraph, "Ranna's lexicon Rannakanda (990)" comes before the wikilinked "Ranna (983) found it suitable to compare his patron". The "Age of Ranna" section with introduction comes later, but the 2nd wikilink is probably ok there. -- Michael Devore (talk) 02:57, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Could you make my requested change to the article? I couldn't do it myself somehow. --Kalarimaster (talk) 16:07, 2 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Kannada literature in the Western Chalukya Empire‎ final edits

edit

I should be able to get together my final edits and talk page remarks tonight. After that, you can decide whether to take it directly to FAC, or perhaps consider asking another editor for a final look. I've worked on the article for so much, I no longer have the necessary distance to see remaining issues and have begun to second-guess myself. The wording is a bit rougher in some spots than others, but you have made very significant improvements there in the past two weeks and the entire article reads better for your work. I don't think you should get a flat rejection on prose at FAC, though further work may be requested to ultimately get promoted. And, of course, there are other issues of content, structure, and controversy unrelated to prose which can come into play, as with any FAC. -- Michael Devore (talk) 20:54, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Karnataka kingdoms and Indianisation of South East Asia

edit

Contrary to popular opinion this cite says that it was the Calukya, Rashtrkuta influence that led to the Indianisation of SE Asia. Taprobanus (talk) 14:46, 19 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Which page is it on. I could not find that in the link page. Regarding influences, over the period 1-1000AD, just about all the famous South Indian empires had extensive trade with SE Asia in addition to the west. So their influences are bound to be accumalative. Chalukya includes Eastern Chalukya from Andhra Pradesh. An interesting recent finding/debate is the prolific sculptures of "corn" in many shapes and sizes, in Hoysala temples, especialy in the hands of certain deities. This according to some scholars was because of extensive Hoysala trade with S.America where corn is said to have originated. Corn as an object of sculpture is probably not found or was not prolific in centuries prior.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 14:58, 19 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
The cite says it is the traders, artisana and Brahmins from the west coast (karnatak) that spread the influence then followed by Pallavas and others in Page 124, 125.....Taprobanus (talk) 17:45, 19 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

BTW, unfortunately I can't seem to dig out enough time to work on FAs these days, but wanted to work on Districts of Karnataka and get it to WP:FL – this is still a medium term project for me. I've started collecting some etymological information that I plan to add to the article (similar to this FL) here (some may or may not be accurate), but can't seem to find the origins of some district names. Would you happen to know how any of their names are derived? Thanks! AreJay (talk) 00:52, 20 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Map of Mysore

edit

Why did you remove the map? I agree that there is already a map of Mysore in the article but the one that exists is for the kingdom of Mysore and the one I added is of the princely state. I found the map to be comprehensive not missing even the minute details. That's why I added.-RavichandarMy coffee shop 15:45, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ravichander, my removing the map was not a knee jerk reaction. There is a second map which represents Kingdom/princely state in the 19th-20th century. It has better perspective from a India point of view. The map you added is crowded with so many details and it a zoomed in map, which if anything is confusing. Three maps is too many. I hope you dont mind. If you really insist, you may add it in such a way that it does not hamper the format of the box. Thank you.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 16:26, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

My priority is a thesis in real life, and Vithoba FAC if I can help with that. I will see what I can do. The topic of your article interests me, for Jainism, yes, but also for language, literature and sociological reasons as well. I will learn more than I give by copyediting.
