Welcome to the project

edit

Hi Don, and welcome to Wikipedia (well, welcome since 2006). I must say I was rather surprised to find you on here. Most historians (especially those that make money off their craft) don't spend much time here, let alone write on Wikipedia, which is typically looked down upon by the professionals. I'm not a professional. Well, not a professional historian, at least. I'm a writer/editor/user, whatever you want to call us here, and a member of a Wikiproject called Wikiproject Capital District and we are working hard to better the quality of articles related to the Capital District. I'm familiar with much of your historical work, since I've been using many of them as sources here (preferably only when I can't find the primary/original source myself). I'm not sure how much experience you've had on here, but Wikipedia can be a great place, and in my opinion it is the perfect medium to share local history since there is unlimited capacity and opportunity (it all depends on who's willing to help out). Based on your contributions, I'll assume you don't have that much experience here, but you might be surprised to find the level of quality you'll see in articles here, especially about the Capital District. Oakwood Cemetery (Troy, New York) is one I got elevated to featured article status a few months ago, Central Troy Historic District is a good article, written by a NRHP buff, etc.; these are some of the other articles that are of high quality here. I also do a lot of photography around the area. Just recently, the librarian at Union College rewrote that article (I expect we will pass a good article nomination in the near future). There's a lot of work going on here. You might be surprised. I'd like to ask if you'd maybe just peruse around a bit, maybe make some comments on some of the (better) articles and weigh your professional opinion. I'm sure we would all appreciate it. For instance, we're currently rewriting the Albany, New York article with the hopes we can make it into a featured article soon. upstateNYer 00:04, 2 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the welcome but not sure how to reply to this or find my way around here?

To reply, just type in the edit window and save your addition (like you did above). End your comments with four tildes (~~~~) to sign your posts so we know you said them. upstateNYer 19:23, 8 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

helpnme How do I find user Gutogonz here???

User names are listed at the following standard link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:___________. In this case you're looking for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Gutogonz. That user's talk page (where you leave messages) is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Gutogonz. But it looks like that is not a valid username. Case and spaces matter, if that has anything to do with it. Also, to use the help me template in the future, copy and paste the following text: {{helpme}} (including the braces). Type your question underneath that text. On an unrelated note, another editor and I are completing the list of NRHP properties in the city of Albany. I'm currently using the plaque for Fort Orange on the curb in front of the SUNY building to represent Fort Orange. However, knowing you did the dig for Fort Orange, I was hoping you may have a photo you would be okay making free (either CC-BY-SA or public domain) to represent the site. The other editor and I have agreed that the plaque is not an appropriate object to represent an entire fort or archeological dig. What do you think? You can respond either here or on my talk page. Add your comments at the bottom of the page under a heading ==Heading title== and sign your post with four tildes (~~~~) so I know you wrote it. Thanks, Matt Wade upstateNYer 19:23, 8 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello Drittner,

It seems to me that an article you worked on, Roger J. Cheng, may be copied from http://rogerjcheng.com/SCIENTISTS%20in%20WEATHER%20and%20CLIMATE-%20CHENG%20by%20DON%20RITTNER.htm. It's entirely possible that I made a mistake, but I wanted to let you know because Wikipedia is strict about copying from other sites.

It's important that you edit the article and rewrite it in your own words, unless you're absolutely certain nothing in it is copied. If you're not sure how to fix the problem or have any questions, there are people at the help desk who are happy to assist you.

Thank you for helping build a free encyclopedia! MadmanBot (talk) 14:48, 24 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Last Warning

You continue to ignore everything you have been told about this article. To be very clear: A) you need to provide actual evidence you own the copyright, saying "I own the copyright" is not evidence. B) Even if you do so, the page will still most likely be deleted for all the reasons I have explained to you before, it is biased, it is badly referenced and it is badly formatted. I have moved the page to your userspace (User:Drittner/Roger J. Cheng) for the time being, but I will not hesitate to delete it if you move it back without correcting it, nor will I hesitate to block you from editing if you continue recreating it--Jac16888 Talk 15:17, 24 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button (  or  ) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Don, I'm learning as I go. The article Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad and others has Sylvester's 1878 map. I think the D&H mostly follows the route, except the D&H bypasses Ballston Spa And Saratoga. I was just looking today and it looks like the "Jim Tedisco Fitness Trail" in Ballston Spa follows the route from Front Street to the Union Mill, I could see the abutments of a bridge over the Kaydeross. From there it presumably stays left of Route 50 (the D&H stays right) up to the "Railroad Run" trail in Saratoga. Next time I get out I may try to see where the ROW crosses Geyser Road.Peter Flass (talk) 22:23, 1 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello I am hoping some seasoned Wiki users can help me. I have published close to 40 books on various subjects and have been trying to post an article on a scientist that I have written extensively about. It keeps getting bounced saying there is copyrighted info in it BUT it is my information from my books and articles. I own the words. I have tried to explain this to an editor who keeps threatening me and ma quite fed up with it. Is there anyone who can look at the article and give me suggestions? Thanks. The article is Roger J. Cheng. Don

Please see the advice given to you when you filed on the DRN: Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/Archive 77#User:Drittner/Roger J._Cheng, the same advice I have given you repeatedly which you have yet to listen to--Jac16888 Talk 16:52, 16 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Re: Request

Sorry, I'm not all that active these days with other stuff taking up my time IRL. That said, I read through your situation here and there are a few things you'll want to know if you're going to begin editing Wikipedia:

  1. When you add something to Wikipedia you are completely giving up your copyright, period. Be aware of that. That means that if you're taking portions of already-written materials, you're giving up the copyright of those portions of your writings. More info at WP:C and WP:DCM. (That means that portions you've already given up have been completely released under Creative Commons. This is irrevocable.)
  2. Wikipedia is not a place to use terms like "important" and "major" in a biography without some serious backup. Those terms are limited to people like Einstein, Lincoln, and Newton. Across the content of Wikipedia, I would argue that Cheng does not qualify for terms like that, which is one reason the users are pushing back on your submission.
  3. That said, using your own works isn't against the rules that I'm aware of. In fact, use of the WP:OTRS system should allow for you to confirm that you are the true copyright holder. That said, much of the writing style you use doesn't fit with Wikipedia's writing guidelines. I'll go through your article and play with it a little bit to drop any bias or point of view (WP:NPOV).

I'll get back to you this. The writing style of Wikipedia isn't an easy one, and definitely isn't one that, based on your typical writing style (I've read many of your books) fits well here. So it requires some work on your part to be more "encyclopedic". That said, I don't believe that the editors that have spoken with you so far have given you the credit you deserve nor have they looked into all possible options. This could be a bit of a don't bit the newbie situation. Anyway, I'll get back to you in a bit. upstateNYer 17:52, 13 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
