NRHP Delisted Properties

I'm new to this Wiki talk page, so I hope I'm doing it corrrectly. I am doing case studies and am looking to create a list of NRHP delisted properties that where delisted for other reasons than fire or flood distruction, and that where delisted through appropriate processes. I've downloaded the Main.xlsx file, but it only list projects in standing on the register. I am proficient in MS Access, but cannot seam to come up with the correct file off of the NPS web page. Can you give me any pointers or assistance. I see where you had identified 1508 properties that have been delisted. I also found another site that identifed that around 980 properties had been destroyed (most by fire). User:Elkman/Sandbox3, etc

Found these pages while looking to see if you'd been active lately. Ever think of just creating one of these pages for every county in the state and using {{GeoGroupTemplate}} on all of them? I've found this system highly useful and have created sets of pages for two different states, User:Nyttend/Indiana NRHP and User:Nyttend/Ohio NRHP. Nyttend (talk) 21:37, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

I've been quite inactive lately, so I should really do something about that. As far as those sandbox pages go, I created a subset of those county lists because I went on a trip to Jackson, Minnesota a couple weeks ago, and I wanted to get pictures of NRHP sites along the way. Having those subsets as sandbox pages made them easier to print and to look up on my iPhone, in case I needed to look up the map to a place while on the way. I should upload those pictures at some point. The sandbox pages exclude the sites with pictures, as well as the places that weren't on my route. --Elkman ^(Elkspeak) 21:59, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Didn't even think about smartphones. I much prefer a basic fliphone to a smartphone, so I always print out my maps with addresses and other details that I need to find them. Since my interest is photographing the unphotographed sites, I simply chop sites once I visit them (example from a recent lucrative trip) and am thus able to use the GeoGroupTemplate output instantly to see where I need to consider going on the next trip. Generator modification request

Could you make a small change to the generator please? PumpkinSky is reporting that entries in Lewis and Clark County, Montana appear in the generator as "Lewis And Clark County", which results in erroneous category names. Thanks for the help! Nyttend (talk) 03:20, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

I'll look into it. I suspect I was doing something to make each word start with an uppercase letter, dating back to the previous database that may have had only capital letters, and that I don't have to do that conversion any more now that the database is modernized. Cottonwood County Courthouse

I undid your edit to Cottonwood County Courthouse before I realized Omeyer & Thori had been created. All of my information showed that the courthouse was created by O'Meyer & Thori. Some MN articles needed to support WLM nominated photos

Hi Elkman. There are a couple (or more) Minnesota NRHP topics within User:Smallbones/list articles, which is a list of needed articles where a WLM-nominated-for-a-prize photo exists. Editor KudzuVine has kindly provided new articles for South Carolina sites on that list; I and several others have started new articles on other sites where NRHP nom docs should be available on-line. Could you possibly please consider starting new articles that might use the WLM pics for MN sites, and help towards verifying those are valid pics of NRHP-listed places? cheers, --doncram 22:52, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

I took a quick peek at two of them on the list. Grant County Courthouse appears to have enough material online and probably offline to start a decent article about it. As far as the Heins Block in Olivia is concerned, there isn't a lot of information out there about it, but there's probably enough to start a stub. Elkman.net

Just a technical question — why is it www2.elkman instead of www.elkman? I can't remember ever seeing another page that was anything but www.name.domain Nyttend (talk) 23:28, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

It's a bit complicated for no real reason. I registered http://www.elkman.net for my own personal web site, which goes to a "real" web server hosted by visi.com. But, I also have the ability to host a web server on my DSL line at home, on my machine at home. Thus, I made www2.elkman.net point to my home machine. www.skateminnesota.org also points here, but brings up different content. I could have named my home machine "nrhp.elkman.net" or something like that, too. And, actually, http://nrhp.mnhs.org points to this page with National Register listings for Minnesota. So, not all Web servers need to be named "www". Now, if I wanted, I could explain all sorts of technical information like how en.wikipedia.org and fi.wikipedia.org can point to the same machine and display different content, but that's probably superfluous. --Elkman ^(Elkspeak) 02:48, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Microformat request

Requesting a simple change to the generator output — when it returns a specific year in the |built= parameter, could you have it envelop the date in {{Start date}}? See this edit for what I mean. According to its documentation, the purpose of the template is to improve microformatting without affecting the appearance of the article. Nyttend (talk) 21:48, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

Fine. Got it. I suppose I'm just going to have to deal with whatever the Arbitration Committee dishes out toward me. I suppose I'm eventually going to have to pay the price for whatever screwups I've made in editing over these past several years. (And, really, it's only my screwups that count.) I know quite well that if there's an Arbcom case, I'm going to be named as one of the defendants, and I'm going to be in a complete load of trouble over it.

I'll tell you what: Why don't you, Georgewilliamherbert, just block me indefinitely right now? If you need a block reason, just put down: "Idiot editor who can't get along with people." Or, put down the reason that if I failed at a different Web site (in this case, a costuming and propmaking forum), and got banned there, then maybe I deserve to be banned from Wikipedia as well. Why on earth would I block you? We have no idea if he's going to file, you didn't poke enough now or when he was first blocked to merit a formal warning, etc.

He's being sensitive to the situation, you're being sensitive to the situation, you two should probably just stay apart for a while. Me telling you that is not a threat or severe criticism. I'm just trying to avoid anything escalating.

New URLs for generator?

I just noticed that the generator can spit out a URL of http://www2.elkman.net/nrhp/infobox.php?refnum=xxxxxxxx — is this a new feature, or have I just overlooked it? I expect I'll find it beneficial either way; thanks. Nyttend (talk) 05:29, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

That's been in there all along. I added that in there so the user can click from a list of properties in a county or city and then pull up an individual infobox. Technically, it's the difference between using HTTP GET, with arguments in the URL, and HTTP POST, with arguments that come from a form. --Elkman ^(Elkspeak) 13:49, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

"Dynamics of the platform" may be one thing, but I could very easily be arbitrated out of existence here. After all, I got banned from a Predator costuming and propbuilding forum after I had an argument with a moderator there. Apparently, my "quality and integrity" were bad enough that they didn't want me to represent them in public. Generator got confused

I decided to try http://www2.elkman.net/nrhp/anyquery.php and was curious to see what the "Rice County, MN" option would do, but no matter what I try, I get

I don't generally have any reason to look up Rice County data (and if I do, I know how to use the querybycounty.php page), so please don't think I'm asking you to do anything for me. That query dates back to the previous schema of the NRHP database, before they changed the database schema (and denormalized it, really). Question

Hello. I saw the question that you asked TDA on the proposed decision talk page. You could ask the same question of me. I involved myself because I'd seen all the previous Doncram postings on noticeboards and felt that Orlady needed some help in sifting through the vast number of articles involved. I've done a small amount of editing about historic sites in the UK and France, which is easier because there's usually more history and documentation. I wrote most of La Vieille Charité, Porte d'Aix, La Couronne, Bouches-du-Rhône, Chateau of Vauvenargues, Cambridge Whitefriars, Hanover Square Rooms and Handel House Museum. I am bemused at the moment by AGK's reactions to some of my statements. As someone very experienced in writing NRHP articles, do you think my comments on editors and editing have been accurate? I think your comments on editors and editing have been accurate. You've studied the situation and you made a few proposals that have been considered by the committee. I don't think you've done anything wrong in commenting on the case, although I see you've had some friction with AGK. And, "exasperated" is an accurate description of the situation and my feelings about Doncram, both in regards to article-writing completeness and in regards to his behavioral issues.

As far as The Devil's Advocate (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log) goes, he appears to be the kind of person who just follows people around and complains about admin misconduct and ArbCom misconduct, but doesn't appear to write substantial article contributions. In his recent editing history, I'm having a hard time finding substantial mainspace contributions other than vandalism reverts. That's not exactly the attitude needed to build an encyclopedia. --Elkman ^(Elkspeak) 22:58, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

What good work? Is there some sort of consensus that I'm doing anything worthwhile or good for Wikipedia by editing a church in a small town in Minnesota? I just wanted to expand the thin stub while I still have the book checked out from the library. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Doncram closed

An arbitration case regarding Doncram has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

1. Doncram is placed under a general probation indefinitely. Any uninvolved administrator may, on his or her own discretion, impose sanctions if, despite being warned, Doncram repeatedly or seriously fails to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any normal editorial process or any expected standards of behavior and decorum. These sanctions may include blocks, page or topic bans, instructions to refrain from a particular behavior, or any other sanction that the administrator deems appropriate. Sanctions imposed under this remedy may be appealed as if they were discretionary sanctions. Doncram may not appeal this restriction for one year and is limited to an appeal once every six months thereafter.
2. Doncram is indefinitely restricted from creating new pages, except for redirects, in article space. He may create new content pages in his user space, at Articles for Creation, in a sandbox area within a WikiProject's area, or in similar areas outside of article space. Such pages may only be moved to article space by other users after review. This restriction may be appealed to the Committee after one year.
3. For edit warring with Doncram, SarekOfVulcan is strongly admonished to behave with the level of professionalism expected of an administrator.

Hello, thanks for helping with the national register info. I had no idea how to format everything properly. Why no info box though? Expand generator output?

Just a request to expand the generator output a little: when a site isn't in a town, the generator doesn't give anything for Location, and when coordinates aren't available, the coordinates parameters are omitted. Could you have it always supply Location and the coordinates parameters, and then have it simply leave them blank (as it does for Architect, for example) when it doesn't have information on them? It's simply that when I write an article about a place with no NRIS coordinates but with coordinates from some other source, it's a little bit more work to copy/paste the template code from some other page instead of simply filling it into the template. Server crash

Just wanted to let you know that something's crashed on your www2.elkman server; all infobox-generator queries return errors. For searches by refnum, we get Invalid query: select arstyl from arstyle where arstyle.refnum = [number] ;Table 'arstyle' is marked as crashed and should be repaired For searches by site name, we get precisely the same error; the refnum parameter is filled in the error message, whether I search by refnum, by an unambiguous listing name such as "Archeological Site 15 Ad 33", or by an ambiguous listing name such as "House". Put in a refnum, and everything's fine, with the only difference being your "Edited, let's hope this works". Put in a property name, and it returns an error. I ran a search for Woodville with no state specified, and it gave me

Invalid query: select state, mpsname, pdflink from mydb.mpsref where mpsname like '%Wakefield MRA%' and state = 'MA';SELECT command denied to user 'elkman_apache'@'localhost' for table 'mpsref'

However, if you search for Logan County, you get two correct infoboxes (Old Logan County Courthouse in KS; Logan County Courthouse in CO) before it breaks while producing results for something in ND, and it doesn't produce anything for OH, AR, or OK. Nyttend (talk) 11:14, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Just checked back here for the first time. Thanks! There's still a slight error when I run the Logan County search: all infoboxes display properly, as far as I can tell, and the left-side information and URLs for Focus are also right, but at the very bottom (immediately above "Enter a property name to search for:") is a big warning, Warning: mysql_close(): 5 is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /home4/elkman/public_html/nrhp/infobox.php on line 100. NRHP tools broken again (or still)

I just tried to use the NRHP infobox generator, at the old URL, and discovered from this page that the URL had been changed. (And I've now updated the links at WikiProject NRHP, though I'm not sure that I caught all of them.) However, I tried the new URL and it's not working. I don't know whether it was ever working normally after the discussion above, from two months ago, because I hadn't seen that discussion until now and had not tried using the infobox generator since about August. When I use the new URL, I get the familiar "Infobox Creator" page, albeit now with the comment noted above, "Edited, let's hope this works", but whenever I enter a (valid) number in the reference number field, the field just blanks out, does not generate anything. I had similar results when trying to use any of the search tools at the parent page, www.elkman.net/nrhp/ – either the field just blanked-out or an "invalid query" message was given. They haven't updated their online database since 2010 or so, so I haven't downloaded anything. Actually, according to their research page, they have all the listings up to 9/17/2014 in an Excel spreadsheet. But, the listings in that spreadsheet just include the property name, address (except when restricted), city, and state. Fortunately, they've been doing a lot of digitizing, so a lot more states have NRHP nominations online. Unfortunately, since the database isn't available, I can't provide stuff like location coordinates, architect, architectural styles, year built, or any of those other pertinent fields. I suppose I could try joining the Excel spreadsheet to their fairly-recent list of coordinates, but that still isn't really enough for a complete infobox. --Elkman ^(Elkspeak) 22:56, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

Linkrot

Just wanted to note that the generator's generating one piece of linkrot: the GeoHack maps link (provided whenever a site has coordinates) no longer works, since this and similar tools have been migrated to WMFLabs. You only need to change a few characters at the start of the URL; for example, http://stable.toolserver.org/geohack/geohack.php?pagename=Infobox_generator&params=40_48_8_N_81_31_22_W_region:US_type:landmark is broken, but https://tools.wmflabs.org/geohack/geohack.php?pagename=Infobox_generator&params=40_48_8_N_81_31_22_W_region:US_type:landmark works well.
