Happy New Year,

I am sorry but I am again asking for further help: OK I am almost ready to submit the article: I have my article ready to go in a word processor. It is a biography The article in the print lay out consists of 13 pages that include also the references and the list of publications. I have the same article in web lay out. The size of the letters I used are 12. I shall copy and paste the text through the search box. 1st question: What size of letters are required? Should the letters be bold or regular?

2nd question: If I copy and paste just the text and would like to add the references and publications by using templates, what steps should I use? I read everything related to templates and I still don't understand (after submitting this article for publication I think I will have a lobotomy - ha! ha! ha!). I don't understand how to use Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).. I would appreciate if you can explain this step by step-----or should I copy and paste through the search box also the references and list of publications?

I apologize for all the disturbance; I hope that I am not a nuisance, and I appreciate all your help. Waiting for the answer that will come in 2015 (here we are still in 2014 - Dec 31, 8:30 PM.

Hi! We have an article wizard - click on the link. But if you have already created the article in a word processor, I suggest you type in the Wikipedia search window: Draft:Your article title, then click on the red link in the resulting page, which should take you to an empty edit field. Paste your text in there. At the top copy and paste this: {{subst:submit}}. Then click Save page. I suggest an edit summary like "Creating new article draft from off-wiki draft". Your article will then be submitted for approval through the articles for creation process; it will be evaluated and will be created after it is judged to be ready. This is the safe way to do it; you can simply create the article, but if there are big problems with it it runs a risk of being deleted before someone can help you fix them. Please help me with how to submit the following biography:
First happy New Year,
I have a biography that I would like to submit for publication. I am finally auto confirmed. The biography is about a prominent world wide know physician who was also a victim of the cold war. He has over 400 publications. He died 50 years ago. His biography does not figure anywhere in Wikipedia. The biography meets all your requirements. I have written the biography in a word processor and I have added manually at the end all the references and a list of his major publications.

Here are my questions:

1. May I copy and paste the text (about 20 pages) with the references and list of publications (about 10 pages) that I wrote in the word processor into the space provided by the wizard page? or must I re-write word by word my text into the space provided by the wizard page, with the references and and publications? or should I do it another way?
2. Can pictures be uploaded in the text prior to submitting my text (in other words can I submit the text with the pictures at the same time? or must I submit the text and after upload the pictures?
Please help. I worked a long time to reach this stage.

Hi Erica: You will have to do the pictures separately, and then insert them in the article. See Wikipedia:Uploading images. Be sure you understand the copyright issues discussed there.
You can write an article in a word processor and then upload it, yes. I did that with my first article. But turn off "smart quotes"; we prefer straight quote marks and apostrophes, and the Mediawiki software uses them in groups of 2 and 3 to make italics and boldface - slanted marks don't work for those purposes. It is better not to type out the footnotes, but to insert them using <ref></ref>. But if you type them out instead, it can be fixed. Don't use the footnoting capability of the word processor.
It sounds like rather a long article draft, and the question for Wikipedia is not so much how many publications he had or whether he was interesting as whether he was distinguished - held a named chair at a major university, made important discoveries - or whether he was written about a lot (for example, is much discussed in books or received an obituary in at least one major newspaper). For the first kind of "notability", see WP:PROF; for the second, see WP:GNG. And the article should be written neutrally and factually - with no personal interpretation and the minimum of quotations - so your draft may well be too long. For both these issues, I strongly recommend you create the article at Draft:Person's Name and submit it for vetting through the Articles for Creation process. This can be done by adding this to the top of the page: {{subst:submit}}. If you prefer, you can simply create it at Person's Name, but there is always a risk that new page patrollers will find problems with it. To do either of these, type the title - with or without the Draft: prefix as applicable - in the Wikipedia search bar. That will take you to a page saying we don't have a page of that title, and suggesting articles where his name does occur, or where similar names occur. There will be a red link near the top of that page on the exact title you typed; click on that to get an input box. The Article Wizard is similar but has preformatted sections to help you.

I just wrote the draft of part of a biography entitled "Professor Doctor Nicholas Blatt" through the space given by the search box for page creation and I pushed the save button. Everything was all right but then under "Adulthood" second paragraph: "While living in Tirgu Mures, Dr. Blatt performed, a very successful emergency Retinal Detachment surgery, on one of the members of the Greek Royal family, and a close relative of Queen Helen of Romania and of Queen Mary, who was traveling through Romania visiting the area. The surgery lasted 7 hours. As a result in 1931 Dr. Blatt was invited to move to Bucharest with his wife, to undertake the position of Official Ophthalmologist to the Romanian Royal Court"; it went into a special box and the whole paragraph went over the side limits of the page. It did that also in a few other spots. Why? what did I do wrong? and what does this mean? Please help! Thank you very much and Happy New Year! Please help me with...

That happens when you have leading whitespace at the beginning of a line. Fuhghettaboutit fixed it with this edit (and improved the layout a little), but you may want to take note of the edit summary: I have to agree that the article's tone is wildly inappropriate for an encyclopedia. We're here to neutrally report facts, not to sing Blatt's praise. An even more severe problem is that the article does not cite any references whatsoever. Happy New Year Mr. Huron! Thank you for your response. In my article "Nicholas Blatt" I don't try to "praise" anybody. I am just factually listing the facts as they developed to the best of my ability. I did not submit yet this biography for publication. I presented it through the search box to create the page. That is what I was advised to do by a few volunteers, and I was told that from there I can edit it as much as I need taking the time I need. If you feel that it needs to be shortened or do something else please advise, what and how, and I thank you in advance. for that. I was inspired for the text by other bios in Wikipedia that looked to me very similar. What concerns the references and publications I have a lot that apply to every fact that i am listing but i did not put them in yet because I did not finish yet. Since this is an open page that I can continue editing I planned to add all the references in the following days. In a previous communication with you I asked you for help with the references. I am looking forward to your very kind advice. Again Have a very Happy New Year1 and thank you.

  • If you honestly thought that you were writing the article from a neutral point of view, then that is a good illustration of one of the main reasons why Wikipedia's policy on conflict of interest discourages us from writing on subjects to which we have a close personal connection. A person with such a close connection is very often unable to stand back from the subject far enough to see how it will look from the detached perspective of an uninvolved observer, and very often such a person will write in a way that seems highly promotional to others, even if they sincerely thought they were writing neutrally. It is impossible to point out exactly why the article reads that way, as it is a question of the overall tone of the whole article, rather than specific details, but to give you a couple of pointers, it is very unlikely that any piece of writing peppered with such expressions as "internationally renowned" and "very successful" will be neutral, and use of the word "unfortunately" clearly indicates that an opinion or judgement is being expressed. I'm not quite sure I understand the question. You have written the note here; writing a draft would use the same edit window. In particular, all the word processor's formatting will be lost in the copy-pasting. Instead, your word processor may be able to export the text with wiki markup (I know LibreOffice has such an option, and I assume so have newer versions of Word, but I don't guarantee that). That would result in a plain text file containing the text with the wikicode corresponding to what formatting the text in the word processor had - you can then copy-paste that text-with-markup-code into the edit window instead of the formatted text. In particular, you need not bother at all with font size; simply doing nothing about that will result in Wikipedia's standard font size, and manually changing that for an entire article would not be helpful. Boldface should be used very sparingly; see the Manual of Style on that.
For the references I'd refer you to WP:Referencing for beginners; the video at that page explains how to easily create nicely-formatted footnotes for references. Huon (talk) 05:15, 1 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your response. Here is the situation regarding the bio I wrote entitled "Nicolas Blatt": It explains a lot: I am 80 years old and luckily going on 50 (excuse my joke) and i am a very active teacher of European History in different colleges and universities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Nicolas Blatt died exactly 50 years ago and he would be 125 years old now. He was my father. Regardless how I look at it and objectively, he was an important man during his times and he contributed a lot to the field of ophthalmology internationally and nationally. He also is an example of how scientist were treated in Eastern Europe during the 50s and 60s. What I wrote is objective and factual. I inadvertently used words which I should have not used because this is my style of writing: I am writing papers for my students and I am correcting their papers at test times. Since I saved in Wikipedia his bio, I edited it several times and I removed or changed all the no, no words. You are making the comment: "if I honestly believe that I was writing objectively---" Why would I be dishonest about it? Everything i listed in the bio took place, nothing is invented or subjective, I just narrated the chronological facts. Everything that I said is 100% documented and at the bottom I added numerically all the references, inserting the numbers in the the text in the area where each belongs. I also listed in bullets his most important publications indicating where each was published and where each can be found. Everything I said is verifiable. I don't look back at him in a flattering manner because of my connection to him. I also intend to add links from the computer of different writings where his name is mentioned by other people. He was mentioned in many Journals in the USA, England, France, Germany, Hungary and Romania. Many of them are not in the computers because in those days computers almost did not exist, however, those Journals are still available today in their existing officers and different libraries. I am all mentioning them in my references (British Journal of Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, American Archives of Ophthalmology, Archives dOfthalmologie (France), ‘Ophthalmologen Verzeichnis’ (Germany) and others. Also at the time of his death all this Journals wrote about it. Equally verifiable is the article written about him in 1949, in the "Romanian Review of Medical sciences" in which he was condemned for promoting Western Science instead of promoting only Soviet Science. His connection with the Royal Court of Romania and his work with Queen Helen of Romania in trying to save Jews from concentration camps are equally verifiable. In addition to the references I inserted in the text a few quotations from these different Journals and reviews. When he succeeded to leave Eastern Europe he was appointed Professor at the Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt Germany. That is also verifiable. I am not a wizard with computers, I work very well with computers for my classes, especially with Power Point, I had to learn a lot before I figured out how to edit articles in the Wikipedia pages, as such i made probably many mistakes in adding references and the format, but i am learning. Why nobody submitted until now his bio in Wikipedia, I don't know. In my writing I took the example of other similar bios in Wikipedia. There are also several people who are presently alive, and I believe that some have written their own story. This has nothing to do with me. I have pictures illustrating many of the facts I mention Please accept this bio. The facts are objective. Thank you

I have a question. I wrote several articles in my Sandbox for the purpose of practice as I was advised. I did not submit any of these articles for publication. Nevertheless, I found one of them, "the Plantagenet Empire under my user name in Wikipedia through Google. That means that any student or anybody who looks me up can read that article. That article was not meant to be read, it needed first a some editing which never happened, I wrote it just for practice. What happened? I wrote another article also in the Sandbox only for practice entitled "A Different Pope". I found out that that article is on a waiting list for review for eventual publication. What happened?

Hello Bazj,

Thank you for your responses, for making the effort and for letting me know about your background in IT. Regarding more information and references on Blatt, I think I am again confused: When I wrote the original article I added at the bottom a whole least of references about the activities of Nicolae Blatt. Among others I referred to the American Journal of Ophthalmology of April 1949, volume 32, #4, page 594, article entitled a "Romanian Eye Journal" in the section of editorials, The article is about Blatt and he is mentioned at length. The original issue is in my possession and I have it in front of me. The British Journal of Ophthalmologt (August and October 1948) is writing about Blatt's beginnings along with some of his articles. It is on Google and appears when you put in his name. One article refers directly to his name and another article is untitled "Ophthalmology in Romania". Now, while some references are shown in the Wikipedia page, the above totally disappeared. Also in my original submission I included a list of about 45 published articles with the exact place where they were published (Name of Journal with their countries and year) Those also disappeared from the article in the Wikipedia page. I also had as Reference an article from a Romanian News Paper called "Curierul Rominesc, that in their issue of June 1994 (29 years after Blatt's Death) has a whole article about Blatt. That also disappeared from the biography on the Wikipedia page. Should I re-enter all these? Regarding the Romanian Journal: "Revista Stiintelor Medicale" in which Blatt is condemned for his scientific and political beliefs: I have that entire issue in my possession and I am looking at it. I am sure that it is also available in Romanian libraries. I speak, read and write fluently Romanian. I don't know how to make this available to you but if you want to verify that maybe through the Romanian Wikipedia that is a possibility. I did not submit anything to to the Romanian Wikipedia. I have translated from Romanian into English long excerpts from that article and I incorporated that in the form of quotation in the original form of the biography, but I see that it disappeared.The same goes for the French article in which is mentioned at length his death in the Journal called "Archives d'Ofthalmologie". I have the original in front of me. I speak read and write fluently French. In addition of mentioning it in my references I translated the article from French into English and incorporated also this translation in the original text in the form of quotation. It is no more there. Should I incorporate these texts in their original languages? The "Institute for specialization and Perfecting Physicians was part of The Bucharest Medical School and it was part of the Resident Programs for specialized future physicians. An article written by Francis Schneider in Romanian, entitled "Evocations" is also on Google and talks about Blatt's situation. Another article entitled: The Ophthalmology Discipline that appeared in UMFT - University of Medicine and Pharmacology Victor Babes in Timisoara is also on Google talking about Blatt. The Medical Historian Samuel Izsak, in 2003 during a an interview about his life in English talks about Blatt on page 18. It is on Google. In the Magazine entitled "Viata Medicala (Medical Life), Issue # 16 published on 25 April 2014 and entitled "The Frantic Waters of Romanianism" written by the physician. . Radu Iftimovici talks about Blatt. It is on Google. In JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) in their issues of March 1931 and 1932 have articles written by Blatt. They are on Google. The German Medical Journal Albert Graefes Archives in their issue of 1965 #168, published postmortem a long article article written by Blatt. It is on Google. The cover of his Ophthalmology manual for students: "Cercetari in Oftalmologie (Ophthalmology Reserch--" published in 1935 is on Google. So please let me know how I should handle all this. Much of this information was on the bottom of my original article. Thank you for your concern about not taking it personally. I don't, I am much too old and also much too busy to take anything personally, I don't have time to get offended. Regarding my comment in our talks on "why nothing was submitted so far to wikipedia about Blatt, I was not asking a question. It was a figure of speech that I inserted in our talk. No I was not being subjective. I am old enough to be pragmatic about what can be considered personal issues. I just believe that a scientist who had a lot of contributions to medicine and science could be mentioned in encyclopedia. I did warn you that there would be changes you wouldn't like. Confronted with a huge mass of unformatted articles, unable to read the Romanian/German material, and not having any medical knowledge that would allow me to assess the material, I took the view that it added little to the fact that that he was an academic surgeon and went way beyond the scope of what was necessary to tell his story. I could be wrong. The material is still available, click on view history at the top of the article and then click on the timestamp of the version you want to see, your last version is this one.
I've added the Cernovitz reference to the article.

Hello Rankersbo thank you very much for your kind message. However, somewhere it is a mistake. I never submitted the article "A Different kind of Pope" to create a page, I was simply practicing in the sand box as I did with other small writings. When I finished I pushed the save bottom that writing was supposed to disappear but it did not. I would never submit an article in that condition and without a lot of editing. Hello Bazj First thank you for your last message. (I really mean it). Now help! I made a mistake: I pushed the button "View History" as you told me in order to look at the previous version of the bio and then inadvertently I pushed save; and now regardless what I do, I am incapable to go back to the version that you last saved and formatted. Please help to bring that version back. Thank you. I also have a couple of questions: 1. You mentioned that it would be nice to have the original of the Romanian article from The Revista Sttintelor Medicale (The Review of Medical Sciences): written about Blatt's Journal of Ophthalmology. As I mentioned, I have it in my possession. In the previous version of the bio I translated a large section of it and inserted it as a quotation. Should I insert instead the same text in the bio in Romanian? Should I scan the text into the computer, or how do you suggest that I should proceed? 2. Regarding the French text that I also translated and you mentioned that it would help to have the original, I noticed just a little earlier that it figures in the bio under reference #12 or 11. Is that enough for that or should I proceed otherwise? I do have the original. 3. In our earlier talk I told you that a whole list of Blatt's papers that originally listed after the text disappeared; but again earlier I noticed that under "External Links" when I click on that, it takes me to a list of 35 papers written and published by Blatt. Thank you for doing that. Are those enough or should I translate some from German? (I am fluent in German). Should I add in the introduction of the bio, that Blatt wrote numerous papers? 4. I think that another reference could be the 2 articles from "The British Journal Journal of Ophthalmology" in which actually an American ophthalmologist called Gifford talks about Blatt's interesting work in the beginning of his career. Both articles are on Google. 5. I have in my possession an original letter from Queen Helen to Blatt; I intend to take a photograph of it with her signature and insert in the text. 6. Regarding the efforts made by the international ophthalmologic community to help Blatt in leaving Romania, most of the people are dead, but i could procure a letter from a member of the family of his sister in law, a person who was very involved in the action, and who could explain, how everything happened. In 1966, the New York Times Review had an entire article, explaining in general Romanians could eventually leave their country if they had family abroad who wanted to pay for their freedom. I think I finished for the moment, please,please help to bring back your last format of the bio which I can nor find anymore.Please also point out what other editing I should do to the text. Hello Yngvadottir, I don't know if you have received my last message. You might be on vacation, and if so I hope that you have great time. Since we communicated last, thanks to your guidance. I was able add about 4 references with citations in the Blatt bio. Now I am able to do it myself. However, I can not figure out how to link with an article that is on google. I put all the info in and insert the citation bu I don't know how to connect it with the link I see on line. I also need help with a small problem that appeared this evening: on reference #12 I put in the info regarding the romanian newspaper "Curierul Rominesc" with the title, and afterward it tells me:"Unknown Parameters-title of article ignored. I don't know what to do about it, I tried several times, I checked the spelling and everything seems to be correct. Please help. Thank you. Hi, sadly no, just busy :-) I've poked around in the article citations, including combining two that referred to the same article. I think your problem may have been that you typed title of article= instead of just title=, and citation= instead of quote=. What is the name of the journal for the Radu Iftimovoci reference? To answer your question, there are three ways to achieve a link to an online version of an article. Two apply when using citation templates (which this article does), the third applies when not using the citation templates (which is my preference in articles I create). To take that third one first: the syntax is: [http://andtherestoftheurlfromthebrowseraddressbar text you want to be linked to (the article title, or I often use the page number in a book I can see on Google Books)]. The single brackets make an external link and the space after the URL indicates that what follows inside them is to be the link text. When using citation templates: if it is a JSTOR article, the parameter jstor= (lowercase) followed by the article number (given on all JSTOR pages for the article within the "permanent link to this item") will make a link on the JSTOR number. You don't need to also add the URL from your browser bar in such cases. (ISBNs work similarly: isbn= will make a link to a page where the reader can choose to look at various listings of books by ISBN.) More usually in the citation templates, the link is made on the title of the book or the article, using the url= parameter. Again, copy and paste it from the browser address bar, being careful to include the http:// or https:// at the start. Does that make sense? A lot of editors like the citation templates, partly because there is a widget that one can download that transforms a URL into a templated citation, but they are temperamental - you have to get the field labels exactly right and adding italics within a citation can produce the reverse effect from that intended. One trick that's worth knowing, however, is that within the citation template, the fields can be in any order, so at least that's one thing one doesn't have to remember. Help! Help! Help! I messed up something: the name of the Journal of Radu Iftimovici (ref.11) is "Viata Medicala" (Medical Life or Medical World). I tried to fix it so that it would read right in the References, and I managed to mess it up. Before it had a direct link to the article on Google and know I lost it, Safari tells me that it does not exist, and I can't bring it back. The article's ISSN number is: 1583-8862. It used to be in the ref. and now it is gone! Sorry to disturb you again, I know that you are busy. Thank you for sending me the instructions regarding the links. Unfortunately this time I am really struggling. Your explanations are perfect, but I just think that my brain is far from perfect! So first question: Should I at this point try to get the links with the third method that you prefer? or should I use the method with citation templates that is my case? I have a hard time understanding each: I don't think I get the syntax; here is what I have [http://andtherestoftheurlfromthebrowseraddressbar ? This all came together! I don't know what to do. The one I am especially anxious to link is the article published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology about Blatt's book "Cercetari in Studii de Oftalmologie written in 1935, and the critique appeared in the August 1936 issue of the British Journal, volume XX, #8,, page 490.I listed all this in the references also with quotation. I saved the article on my Desktop, it is there but I can not find it anymore on line. The articles in British Journal of Ophthalmology about Blatt's work are also on line, 6. There are a couple of articles from the American Journal of Ophthalmology that are on line. You were kind enough to link the one entitled, a "Rumanian Eye Journal". What I am trying to say is that the bio is no more an "orphan", because Blatt's name appears in several publications on line. This morning, for ref #13, I replaced my translated quoted text with the original version in German. Another matter that concerns me is the wording: I eliminated to the best of my knowledge anything that would sound like promoting the subject or that would sound subjective. If not so please let me know where. If possible I would like to have those 2 notation on the top of the article removed. Thank you again for your great patience, and please let me know.

Hi, I have fiddled with a couple of the references, adding URLs. I cannot find the British Journal of Ophthalmology citation online, or the interview, but a more thorough search when I have more time might find them. Try not to worry too much about teh templates at the top of the article, but it may be time to remove or modify some of them, yes. However, the orphan one is still correct: there are still few or no Wikipedia articles linking to Nicolae Blatt, and that's what that refers to. Thank you very much, don't work too hard. I am also preparing for my classes that start in 2 weeks. When I put in the Google frame the name "Samuel Izsak" It takes me directly to the interview that is presented in the form of a narration. On the left side is written the name of the interviewer, etc. In the section "Growing up", paragraph 3, he talks about Blatt, he refers to him with the first name "Miklos, that means Nicolas or Nicolae in Hungarian (at that time the city of Koloszvar/ Cluj Napoca was still under Austro-Hungaran government). I have taken the citation of ref. #2 directly from Google, I don't have the hard copy of that article. Regarding the British Journal of Ophthalmology, it is very frustrating: the Quotation I have on ref.12 come directly from that article on line (google), I don't have the hard copy. Thank you very, very, very much. I think that I am going to raise you a statue! You helped me so much and I learned a lot from you. Thank you also for the info on the Hungarian Wiki and the Esperanto Wiki. Izsak is an interesting scholar. Even though I speak fluently Hungarian, I struggle when I am reading, because I did not receive a formal education in Hungarian. When I was a teenager, I became very stubborn, rebelled and decided that French, Romanian, English and German were enough. However, I figured it out and I managed to read on the Hungarian Wikipedia the articles you referred me to. How does one access the Scholar Google? I wonder if I could find there the French article from the Archives d'Ophthalmologie, The Romanian article from the Revista Stiintelor Medicale, and from the Curierul Rominesc, and the German article from Klinische Monatsblatter? As mentioned I have them all in hard cover but I could not find them on Google. Oh! thank you also for removing 2 of the no no notations on the top of the bio. That of course!!! (being sarcastic with myself) brings me to another question: OK! I have external links that take a reader to a collection of 35 papers written by Blatt. However, the article section lists only one article when the man had exactly 373 articles. I don't mean to list them all but at least some of the most important. As we discussed before I had them listed before but they disappeared. I see that other bios have a bunch of articles listed with bullets. Is it possible for me to do the same thing? and if so do I list them through the same procedure as I used for the references? I try to minimize my questions, but somehow they keep pupping up. Sorry!

Dear Erica, your English is not so good, but neither is my Hungarian! But together we can probably fix up a lot of articles with your expert Hungarian and my expert English. The wife and I did the series of articles on the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, a few years ago, which was not so much doing the translation but doing the pics and biographies and redoing the maps so they had English captions rather than Hungarian ones, and so on. That was a struggle. I don't dare touch the Treaty of Trianon because that would be a nightmare, any change there would be so contentious, not worth bothering to touch. Dear Si Trew, this is adorable! Thank you for getting in touch with me! I inadvertently did not sign my message to Yngvadottir. I forgot. This is what Hungarians do when they get exited, and I was exited when I wrote my message. I hope that he is getting my message. How come that an English couple is living in Hungary? Even though I speak fluently Hungaria, I know its history, geography and both my parents were Hungarians, I have troubles reading and writing Hungarian, because my parents who lived at a certain moment in Transylvania, later moved to Romania, and I was born in Bucharest. So I was formally educated only in Romanian, French and German. I learned Hungarian by listening to my parents. So you told me "Good Morning" and I am telling you "Yo esztet" (please don't mind my spelling) meaning "good evening": I am in San Francisco and here it is 6:30 PM on January 12. You must be an early bird because right now in Hungary it is 4:30 AM on January 13. Thank you very much for your offer to help. It's OK. I see from your history that you have only started editing Wikipedia. And don't worry, WP:WIKIGNOMEs like me tend to tidy up things in the wee hours when nobody else is around, like Wombles. So carry on and don't let anyone put you off. You're contributing to a fantastic resource to expand knowledge, that is free, anyone can edit, anyone can find information. When you're wrong we will tell you politely, I hope, but don't let that stop you doing it! Your user page on Elanor of Aquitaine is a mess, and there's a good article about it already! I would suggest slightly to edit articles in the back waters where you won't have so much fuss and bother, take something that you really care about, that nobody really looks at, and improve it.
But whatever you do, please carry on contributing to Wikipedia. Once you get the bug you won't stop. Every now and then I think oh, I can't be bothered with this, all these arguments and discussions, I can just switch on the telly and take a WP:WIKIBREAK. But eventually I always come back, because I love doing it. I do have a real life as well! But I think my spare time is spent better doing WP than watching telly.
There is no seniority here. Don't let anyone tell you that anything you contribute is not good enough. Wikipedia is not finished. All you have to do, is to make it a bit better. You've made a few mistakes but old hands will correct those, don't worry about it. I edit loads and make stackloads of mistakes and someone else sweeps up behind me. Bung in and contribute and don't worry too much about the technical stuff, that's what gnomes like me are here for!

My ears and whiskers! Don't worry, I am on Hungarian time but rather a night owl. Your English is a bit out, I guess from your surname you are married to an Englishman (Americans don't tend to have double barrelled names) but neither of yours is the least Hungarian or Romanian. I speak fairly good French and translate sometimes articles from French to English at WP. If you are good at languages, maybe have a look at WP:PNT, "Pages needing translation into English", where things that are thrown in from usually Google Translate end up, if you can do good German or whatever, well, you can translate the text es Hungarian: mernok vagyok I'll do the fixing up, no worries. I am all right at Spanish and can do a tad of Romanian simply because it is latinate so because I can do French and Spanish and a bit of Latin I wouldn't be able to speak Romanian but I can usually understand it. It was my first trial with the Sandbox, I was just playing, and I did not edit it because it should have disappeared. Obviously it did not, and that upset me very much. Hi Erica: I'm putting my reply all the way at the bottom so it's easier to find. You're very welcome, and while I was offline, I see that you've been meeting more Wikipedians and that someone else has helped with the citation templates in the article. I'm sorry if I missed the misplaced R - you said you had put the German for a citation and I looked for it but didn't see it, and my online time at work was limited. Google scholar is at scholar.google.com. For some reason some things come up there and not in a JSTOR search, so I often check both when researching an academic. For the research papers: we can't list them all. An external link to a complete online list is good. But if reviewers or biographers particularly mention particular ones as having been important, then those can be listed in the "Selected works" section, with footnotes to those reviews. That is best practice - sometimes Wikipedians do list all the articles someone has published, when the scholar hasn't published many! I'm going to ping Drmies here, who is also an academic and has worked on a lot of articles about academics. After he looks at Nicolae Blatt and its history, he may be able to judge whether the rest of the templates at the top can be done away with. It's been looking quite good to me. Also, since I am an administrator and can do that, I deleted your "pope" sandbox some time ago, because you'd clearly said you wanted that done. Thank you again for all your prompt responses, for your encouragement, guidance and for helping in actions. I really am embarrassed that I interfere in your work. I am grateful. This was a very special and different evening (mildly put). Yes, I met other Wikipedians. PC-XT is very helpful and uses very positive criticism. I think he took care of a couple of things. However, not everybody is like this. The person who edited your talk page is very different, I don't mind criticism, but I don't see any reason for indiscretions. I am looking forward to hear the response of Drmies. Thank you for deleting the article "A different Pope". Yes I would like to have deleted the so called article "The Plantagenet Dynasty". Thanks. Of course, I don't expect to list all of Blatt's research papers. I just would like to list a couple that have been in great demand just before his death, and some published after his death. No problem, people who know me here notice that I am on Wikipedia at peculiar times and often doing several things at once :-) Drmies responded up above, so I have removed the COI tag from the article, and I also got the spouse line to show. Those are called infoboxes, and they have their own fiddly coding. I checked at the page where this one lives and is documented, Template:Infobox person. I think the Plantagenet problem should be solved now; it was on your user page, which is why it was coming up in a Google search on your name. Once they update their cache, it should no longer come up. Let me know if I've missed some other place where it's hiding. Go ahead and list a few of the papers; I can probably find footnotes to add where they are cited. The bullet points are made using an asterisk; you can see how it works if you look at the list of his books in edit mode. Yes, please do upload a couple of pictures. I gave you links earlier to some help pages on images, but don't worry too much, things can be fixed. The basic syntax for inserting a picture in an article is: [[File:Filename|thumb|caption text]]. Just saw your post on my talk page. Yes, Google indexes swathes of Wikipedia. Some noticeboard discussions are no-indexed, and according to this page so are user talk pages like this one and mine, but their crawlers pick up the strangest things. Grin and bear it :-)
I recommend uploading the pictures here rather than on Commons. "Upload file" in the sidebar on the left. Use the file upload wizard if you can. You have to upload them either here or on Commons before you can insert them in the article. Use a meaningful title rather than a numerical file name. The citation is broken because you created a new page just for the citation, which is not how it's supposed to be done. You have to use the coding seen in {{Cite journal}} and copy that into the article that you want to use the citation in. So you should take the code below, and paste it into the article:

  • Erica, you can let that be deleted. Look at the article and you'll see that the reference is there, it's correctly formatted now. You accidentally created a new template because of where you positioned the "R"; the other editor who is far better than me at templates fixed it to produce what you intended. Erica, you can always use "Preview" and put in a temporary {{reflist}} or <references> in the section you're editing, so that you can check the reference and so on before you save it. Hi, I am back and I am going to start uploading pictures; however, I need clarification regarding a few facts: You mentioned that:"I should start by uploading some pictures here"; does that mean on my talk page? Yes I would like you to see them first. I have about 6, but I shall start with the most important: Blatt's head picture to start with, his picture as a young man, the picture of his spouse.. I uploaded all the old pictures in my computer in jpg format, they are in stream roll and each has a number so they are ready to go. I read the "upload file" on the left side so I am going to try using the Wizard, I think I could handle it. As I understand I just have to give a name to each picture, but should I not also put the number? How does the name relates to the picture? Once I upload it where does the picture go? Please let me know. You sent me some instructions before but for some reason they disappeared from my talk page.Sorry! They might have been on the talk page of Nicolae Blatt, but i cannot find that anymore. So I am sorry for being redundant. I replied to your comment on my talk page. While I'm here, I think that "Upload file" link is what User:Yngvadottir was talking about. I've seen some people add the number to the name. Once you upload the picture, it will go to a page named after the file, with a "File:" prefix. That page gives the information you enter in the Upload Wizard under a view of the picture. You use that name to place the image in the article, as well. It will also appear in your Upload log, where you can find all the pictures that successfully upload. If you have any problems, feel free to ask. There are several ways to show the pictures in the article, and sometimes it depends on what kind of pictures they are, so it might be good to upload them, first. —PC-XT+ 09:58, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi: I meant on English Wikipedia rather than on Commons. Once you upload them, others can help you with them, since they will show up in your contributions. But once more, the basic syntax to insert a picture is [[File:FILENAME|thumb|CAPTION]]; you replace FILENAME and CAPTION with whatever, and put that whole block where you want the picture to appear (on the right - for a picture on the left, add |left| after "thumb"). It's conventional to put them on a new line so they are easy to find in editing. As PC-XT says, there are other ways, but that's the main way, for single pictures. Looking forward to seeing them! Yes, exactly, decide where you want the picture to appear (usually the top of a section or the top of a paragraph), hit "enter" and type that block of stuff on the new line you have created. But you have to upload the picture first, or teh filename will be meaningless to the software. It can't pull it off your computer. (The questions are no problem; as you've seen, if I'm not around, someone else usually is and can help, often someone who understands these technicalities better than me :-).) Hello Yngvadottir, I am going to start with a joke: I was never inclined to drink: I always like one good glass of red wine with a good meal especially when I go out for dinner, but that is it. Well! I think that this thing will drive me to drink! Help! Help! Help! I don't know anymore what to do! You probably saw by now that I uploaded several pictures on wiki but the majority were not accepted saying that"I did not indicate the license status. I answered all the questions to the best of my ability and I indicated that they are"free field", and "pubic domain". All the pictures were inherited. Most of the messages are here on my talk page, but with the risk of being redundant I am listing them all below. Please advise. I sent also a similar message to PT-XT on his talk page and I am asking help from both of you. 1. The picture: "Nicolae Blatt as a young man" was taken before 1924 and it is a family picture that was always in the family. It tells me that unless I give a license status it will be deleted by January 23, 1923. I don't know what else to do? Everybody who lived during that period are dead by now! 2. The picture: "Marta Scheiner, spouse of Nicolae Blatt" was taken before 1924, It is a family picture that was always in the family. The Wizard just didn't tag them with a template. Here are two that might apply here: {{PD-self}} or {{Cc-zero}}. Read those two pages, and if one describes how you want to release the image, edit the image pages and enter that template (in the form {{...}}) into the License section. I think that should do the trick, but you can wait for User:Yngvadottir's reply, if you want. We have some time to tag the images. —PC-XT+ 08:55, 16 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I went ahead and added 2 more to the article, because this should be solvable. Look at the first image, the "middle-aged" one; are there any that the same conditions apply to? If so, copy what appears there. Otherwise, you can click on the link above for Mediawiki Copyright questions. Or you can send a big e-mail to OTRS with a list of all the file names, when they were taken, by whom if you know, and that you are the heir to the images. (The page I've linked there has a link to a page listing the e-mail addresses for different issues.) As PC-XT says, there's time to sort this out. Try not to worry. Hello Yngvadottir, thank you for all your guidance and instructions. It works! I would have never been able to do it without your great help and without the help of your Wikipedean colleagues. Also thank you for inserting the first 2 pictures, that started me in the right direction. inserted 5 other pictures. I probably should stop now inserting because I think that I have enough pictures. I just wonder if it is possible to increase the size of some of those pictures. Please let me know. Regarding the objections I received about not giving information about licensing, I think I fixed it, but it also tells me that I don't give any reason for the free domain. I explained that I inherited those pictures, that they are all family pictures given to me by Nicolae Blatt and by his wife. I don't know what else I can say and I don't know where else I can put that info. I also have trouble finding the Email address you told me about. The good thing is that I don't receive anymore Emails telling me that the pictures could be deleted. I can see the end of the tunnel. Thank you very much. I think that I inserted enough pictures. Than you for your suggestions about how to take care of the licensing issue. I think I fixed it, because I do not receive anymore Email telling me that some pictures might be deleted. However, they say that I don't give them any reason for the "Public Domain", even though I explained that the pictures were inherited and that they always were in the family....I put that info almost everywhere, I don't know where else to put it. It's hard finding a pre-made tag that applies, because these are family pictures, and the tags are mostly for published images. Here's a list of them: Wikipedia:File copyright tags/Public domain. If none of those apply to an image, we might be able to claim fair use for it, or maybe User:Yngvadottir or someone who deals with this kind of image has another idea. And I believe the form you need to fill out is the one at Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries, since you inherited the rights to the pictures. Hello Puffin, Thank you for your message regarding file "Marta Blatt spouse of Nicolae Blatt" Please help straightening this out. I don't understand what else I should do. The person in this picture was the wife of Nicolae Blatt. So her married name was Marta Blatt. The picture was taken in 1930, the year Marta Schooner and Nicolae Blatt got married. That means that the picture was taken more than 80 years ago. This person died in 1972, meaning 43 years ago. I am the owner. This picture is a family picture and it was always part of the family collection pictures that I personally uploaded all on wiki.   • Sorry to butt in: If you assert you are the copyright owner, you can give permission for its use under the general licensing conditions CC-SA and GDFL. (You can find the links for those at the bottom of any Wikipedia page, including this one, so I shan't repeat them here). Basically this means you licence them to be used for whatever purpose whatsoever, but you do actually retain the copyright, and you will be attributed as the owner. Really, you should just "assert" ownership stating what you have said here, and probably the easiest way to do that is explain as you have above that it is from a family collection that you own and hold. For good measure, describe your lineage to the person pictured (e.g. "she was my grandmother on my mother's side). As with everything Wikipedian, once you've done one, the rest are easy! Hello Yngavadottir, how are you? Thank you for guiding me regarding those pictures. I think that the problem is solved with most of the pictures, I think only one is still pending. I did send an Email to "permissions" explaining my connections to those pictures and telling them that I am the owner, etc.. Today almost all the ones on the the deletion list were turned around. However, if you don't mind and if you have the time, please have a look at the status of those files, and tell me what you think. I am also sending them the declaration form. I also added a few references to the bio, and I will insert in the special notes 3 or 4 titles of important articles. I found the full written texts of the articles on line. You're welcome. I hope the issue with the pictures will be resolved soon, but I believe they do need both a full list and that form. I still see the notices on the files in the meantime, but I assume you're exchanging e-mails. One thing I notice is that you put yourself down as the author of the pictures - I believe that refers to the photographer. Presumably this is being clarified via e-mail. You may wind up not being able to use the group shots from conferences, unless your mother took one of them. But I imagine we'll be able to get it straightened out for the family pictures and possibly the laboratory one. I'm waiting to see how things go. As to the article, I formatted most of the references you had added but removed one that was unclear and one that was to a working group's page on hu.wikipedia - we do not cite Wikipedia itself as a source, and he is simply redlinked there anyway. The source they are deriving their list from would be valid, but we may already have that source? I didn't see you adding more titles of papers he wrote; the criterion for adding those would be that someone cited them as important (for example, mentioning that particular paper in an obituary of him, or discussing it as a major piece of work in the field in a later scientific work). In that case it gets a new bullet point with the information on the paper and then the reference citing it. Otherwise, the number of papers and the breadth of topics are enough information. The Wizard has interpreted something as you saying you took the photo/created the image. Explain it all in the e-mail. You may need to make a copy of the form for each different image, because they were taken by different people; if it seems as if you can manage with one form plus the attached list, do so. The OTRS pending template goes under all the rest of the stuff but above the categories, I believe. I'm going to ask a couple of people on their talk pages to look here and see whether I've said anything foolish to you, so new people may stick their heads in here. For each picture you send to that email with a form, (or when you add it to the list, if you send them all together,) go the the picture's page. Click the [edit] link next to the "License" header, and place {{OTRS pending}} at the bottom. (If there are any [[Category:... links, it should go over them, as Yngvadottir says, but it probably doesn't matter too much, because they can redo that section if the picture is accepted.) It may take a few weeks to know for sure if the pictures are accepted, but that edit should help keep it from being deleted until they finish reviewing it. I hope that helps. What does this all mean? What do they mean in this case by the URL of the picture?What do they mean by "Ticket Number"? In clicking on instructions it tells me to insert "pdsource=yes", where? when i do that it tells me that they don't have such a template. I checked the comments on every picture and every picture clearly quotes what I wrote in the wizard: that I am the owner, that I inherited each picture, etc, etc.They say almost about each picture that it belongs now to the "public domain". A few days ago i received a message from a volunteer called "Puffin" I guess from OTRC. I followed all his instructions, but he never responded, and now I get the above. In reading instructions The instructions from the manual also say to contact the OTRC volunteer for my area and it gives the name of "Tiptoety" for pacific time USA. Should I at all contact this person through my talk page, or by Email? I am in San Francisco and the office of the Foundation is in downtown San Franncisco. I guess that the office of OTRC is there, and I begin to wonder if I should not go there personally with this issue? In conclusion, I am repeating my past joke:"I never had a drinking problem, but this thing probably is going to drive me to drink"! Sorry you're having so much trouble with this. The first message should appear under the picture after you tag it with {{OTRS pending}}. It looks like you somehow got to an OTRS documentation page (this one) instead of a page relating specifically to your pictures. I think an OTRS person will use those instructions to fill in the id/ticket number under the picture when it is approved. There may possibly be someone working with OTRC at the Foundation office, but I'm not sure. I think OTRC is basically run by volunteers, so they could be anywhere. User:Tiptoety is an OTRS member, so would probably know best, and also hopefully doesn't mind getting pinged, because I just did... basically we're wondering if you are in the OTRS system, and should tag the pictures and wait for the process, or if you need to send an email for each picture or do something else. —PC-XT+ 11:09, 21 January 2015 (UTC) 11:37, 21 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

It looks ok. As you can see in your above message, when you place {{OTRS pending}} somewhere when editing, it shows up as a message box when viewing the page. If you edit, again, you can see the tag as you entered it, again. I asked a couple of people to look in here, but it looks to me as if - of the numbered list PC-XT placed higher up on this page - numbers 10 and 12 are ok (there is no deletion tag on them) and all the rest except for 6 and 7 you have placed the OTRS pending tag on. Since both of those have duplicates of the same picture with slightly different file names, I think you've done it. They appear on line. However, This articles appear un der the British Journal of Ophthalmology, with the title, text, name of the author (V. St Johns), with the page, but they don't give the volume #, Issue # and year. I would like to list them in the references, but the above info is missing. Examples: " (I) Blatt,Nicholas(Roumania).-Gumma of the ciliary bodies, a late syphilitic product. (Gumma des Ziliarkorpers als spatluetisches Produkt.) Klin. Monatsbl.f.Augenheilk., Vol.LXVII, 1921. Hello, the good news is that "Permission"responded to one of my form declaration informing me that the Marta Scheiner picture was accepted. Probably the others will also be taken care gradually. Yesterday I was busy at the college, but today I worked on the bio by adding some references from the British Journal of Ophthalmology which are on line but don't have the volume nr. In the articles' section. I added a few, and some communications delivered at 2 meetings and written about. I don't know if I did all this as I should, but I know that you will be so kind to correct it if it will be the case. I might have added too many articles, but if so, please remove the unnecessary, or if it looks good----: I chose some articles by purpose, knowing that they were very much in demand at the time and were published the year of Blatt's death or postmortem. I think that one of them is listed also in external links. I also chose some from the beginning of his career. Please let me know. That photo seems to be the one that has just been deleted. Check the URL and if it is the same one they mention in their e-mail, write them back asking what happened. Thank for responding. I think that the pictures became duplicated when I Emailed to "Permissions" the form they requested. I wrote them this evening that the redundance was accidental and explained again all the circumstances. Just this evening I received several responses from "Permissions" telling me that they took care of the pictures that are on the deletion list. I shall see tomorrow morning, I hope so. Meanwhile the picture of Marta Scheiner has been reinstated. Thank you for removing (at least I think it is you) the notation on the top of the bio saying "that i need more references". i see that you added actually one more reference and also a couple of articles. I did not check the history section yet. It looks to me that everybody is over worked! No worries, you're welcome. What I did was move the articles you had listed to a chronological listing at the end and footnote those of them that I could. I'm immersed in retranslating an article right now but will look to see what the valid file name is for the Marta Scheiner photo and reinstate it if no one else has - a bot commented it out after the file that was in the article was deleted. Bumpy ride

Some images were duplicates, from uploading the same image again. When deleting for redundancy, one copy should be left, so it shouldn't affect the article or any pages using them. I'll post a gallery of the images, so you can see them all. These all look ok, and some have even been moved to commons so other language Wikipedias and other Foundation sites can show the images using the same file name. The redundance of some of those pictures was accidental. Meanwhile I also received tonight Emails from "Permission" that they received my Form declarations for each, in which I stated that I am the copyright owner of each picture, that they are my personal pictures given to me by my parents and that I release them to the public. "Permissions sent me Emails saying that they made the necessary adjustments.I hope that the pictures you listed one by one on my talk page will not be deleted. I would appreciate very much your help. Locations etc.

Wikipedians vary on whether they reveal anything about themselves. One of the advantages of registering an account is an anonymous mask with no indication of location. However, the Wikimedia Foundation requires (behind the scenes and confidential) identification for certain editing rights and posts - basically all those above Administrator. I believe the Foundation also disagrees with me that pseudonymous privacy is beneficial for Wikipedia, and encourages the use of real names as user names, but it may be more a matter of differing views among Foundation employees than I think.

If you look at a number of user pages you'll see that many include a biography and user boxes identifying things like profession and location. Some of these place the user in a category; for example, since you've mentioned you are in or near San Francisco, there is Category:Wikipedians in San Francisco, California, the page for which includes the code for user boxes that add one to such a category, and a link to a mailing list. There are both WikiProjects and face-to-face meetups for many locations: Wikipedia:WikiProject California/San Francisco Bay Area task force, and Wikipedia:Meetup/San Francisco shows the last meetup in SF was on December 14. There are also editathons, which are often intended to draw in new editors to our shared addiction but by no means exclude active editors, and often take place at museums, libraries, and other places where there is information ready to hand to be cited, and the international convention, Wikimania. Hello Yngvadottir, Well! very interesting! Thank you very much for all the information you gave me. At the start I did not understand the reasons for anonymity but after more than one month of communication, after learning about several situations, and about the philosophy of Wikipedia, it makes a lot of sense. It is also very much a form of protection. I read about the background of several people. That does not mean that I am not curious, I understand and respect your personal principles and philosophy. Actually several users have almost no information on their pages. You have an impressive intellectual background. While everybody is helpful you certainly are the most patient, positive, and thorough user with whom I communicated. The other user who I feel is very helpful and thorough is PC-XT. By the way, I also love Wagner. Unfortunately around here, I am surrounded by many people who don't like and don't understand Wagner. Unbelievable! I also read the different references you gave me. On one hand i would like to participate to the San Francisco Wikipedia group but i am not sure if I am ready for it. I read the backgrounds of some of the members, they are interesting, some of them maybe are a little too astringent for my taste. Translating articles

Hi Erica, good to hear from you again! I was just wondering how you were doing. In terms of translating from English to another language, unfortunately almost all the regulations are up to the other site, in this case Romanian Wikipedia. They probably have a policy page on translating articles; or if you already have edited there and have received a welcome template on your talk page there, you could ask the user who gave it to you, or ask at the help page mentioned in it. For example I know of at least one Wikipedia where they prefer translated articles to be imported complete with history by an administrator and then translated. Also, I believe some Wikipedias do not allow newly registered editors to create new pages, in which case you would have to draft it in your user space over there until you met the requirement to move it into mainspace. As far as absolute Wikimedia/legal licence requirements go, all that is required is that you clearly link to the English Wikipedia article for attribution (credit to all the editors who have worked on it); that can be done with a statement on the new article's talk page or in an edit summary in the article itself, preferably the first. I usually do both these days. For example, see my first edit summary at Schaaken Castle, which I made today, and my edit creating Talk:Schaaken Castle. To link to an article on another Wikipedia, use this format: [[:en:Nicolae Blatt]]; the initial colon is important because otherwise the link will not appear and instead the page will simply be linked using the old interwiki system. If you don't mind please give me some additional explanations: What does it exactly mean "absolute Wikimedia license requirements as related to the Romanian Wikipedia?, How do you link to the English Wikipedia article for attribution, how do I credit all the editors who have worked on it? Does that mean that I write on my Romanian talk page the names of all the editors who worked on Blatt's bio? or in an edit summary in the article itself, how???? I'll try to answer clearly, sorry, it is a bit confusing. You need to find out on the Romanian Wikipedia what their rules are about translating articles into Romanian. The different Wikipedias have varying rules on this. What I said was that at least one Wikipedia - it's the German one - prefers you to have an administrator import the whole history of the article to your user space, and then you translate it there and move it into article space. I can't read Romanian to search their rules pages to find what rules they have in this area, and you may need to ask on a help page over there what their procedure is. (If they do have that same rule, it would be an admin on Romanian Wikipedia who would do the import.)
The minimum requirement for legal purposes is to link the two articles either in an edit summary or on the talk page of the new article. If you look at the history of the Schaaken Castle article, the first edit summary is the one I meant. The link in that to the German Wikipedia article was typed like this: [[:de:Burg Schaaken]]. You would make an edit summary on the Romanian article stating that you were creating the article as a translation of [[:en:Nicolae Blatt]]. Alternatively or as well, after you translate the article, create its talk page with a statement in Romanian saying that the article is a translation of [[:en:Nicolae Blatt]] (There is a template to do that, but just stating it in Romanian should be just as good.) That statement in either of those places gives credit to all the editors who have worked on the English article, because it enables someone to check the history of the English article. However, my point about checking what the rules are on Romanian Wikipedia is that it is possible they want you to do it a different way.
There is a separate kind of linking, once the new article is created, which produces the interlanguage link on the bottom left of both the Romanian and the English article, to the other one. That's done through Wikidata from the English article (the one that existed first.) I or someone else will happily do that for you once you have created the article on the Romanian Wikipedia.
I hope that's now a little bit clearer ... I see from your global contributions that you have not yet edited on ro.wikipedia. I suggest you go over there and look at their help pages and find a place to ask what their procedures are for translating articles.
As to the PowerPoint presentation, I suspect it falls under uploading media. PC-XT or another technically able person would be better able to advise you, but there are two aspects to it: the technicalities of uploading and the legalities if you are not the author of some of the content, sich as images. Hey, Yngvadottir pinged me to answer the question regarding PowerPoint files. Commons doesn't yet support PowerPoint, but it has been requested. (See commons:Commons:File_types#Nonfree file formats.) I haven't seen a presentation uploaded in PowerPoint format on Wikipedia, either, but they can be converted to other formats, which can be uploaded. The Wikipedia uploader accepts files up to 1,000 MB in size in any of these file types: png, gif, jpg, jpeg, tiff, tif, xcf, pdf, mid, ogg, ogv, svg, djvu, oga, flac, wav, webm. Commons has commons:Category:Created with Microsoft PowerPoint for files created by PowerPoint, including presentations as pdf files. You may be able to email it to someone at OTRS to convert it appropriately, if you own the copyright. Just like with images, the copyright questions will need to be answered. I wouldn't blame you if you thought I fell off the edge of the world, I've been away so long. I started transferring some of your images to Commons. I'll post the links below as I transfer them. You may want to check them and the information on their pages when you click them to be sure it all transferred ok. If so, the local copies may be removed and the Commons copies will be used, instead. This will be automatic for most images. Feel free to ask any questions.
