RfA

edit

Hi. Do you know what happened with this RfA, and why did the candidate withdraw? Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Dihydrogen Monoxide 3. —usernamekiran(talk) 23:59, 28 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

usernamekiran, I think the best person to ask would be the user him/herself. AFAIK, however, they are no longer active, but are now an adult. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 00:11, 29 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
lol. How can we ask them if they arent around? And yes i was going to do that but Giggy (new name) is inactive, and no name looked familiar in that RfA. So thought i should ask you. It feels like enwiki from alternate dimension. Everyone is a stranger, discussion section is at different location and whatnot. —usernamekiran(talk) 00:42, 29 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
usernamekiran, there are quite a few familiar names on that RfA even though it was 10 years ago. There are also many who are blocked. A careful analysis will reveal why it was withdrawn, but it might take a while for anyone who is not as familiar with the RfA process as I and a few others are. It's certainly a good example of why some people should think twice before running for adminship, and conversely - and also ironically - one of the reasons why truly competent candidates of the right calibre are reluctant to come forward. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 00:52, 29 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Oh my. Some familiar names for us old-timers anyway. One of them provided the single diff that torpedoed my first RFA. Another is.... let’s just they helped inspire this essay.
In any event, there’s probably no reason to poke this particular bear. The takeaway is: don’t run for RFA unless you’ve really done your research on what it takes to pass, and even then assume you will do at least 10% worse than you would reasonably think you would. RFA is hard, and it can be very stressful for the candidate. Some users have failed at RFA and just left forever. Others took it so bad they decided to become trolls and/or long-term abusers (thus proving their unfitness for the position). In 2001-07 it was more or less a cakewalk. Not so much anymore. Beeblebrox (talk) 05:03, 1 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Agreed with the sentiments above. I nominated Kudpung for his RfA, way back when, and nearly all of the oppose !votes said that he had the clue and skillset for it, but then highlighted things like the fact that "he skipped his own graduation" or diffs from arguments a year prior as the basis for their opposition. Mind you, many of those in opposition were people I greatly respect; the point is that RfA is no joke, even for highly competent and accomplished users. ceranthor 14:50, 1 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
At least one of the nonsense opposers has since been desyoped. It was for something else though. Oh, the irony...Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 14:29, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
I found that RfA while I was on mobile. It was sort of difficult to dig up in history, so I asked kudpung. I hadn't seen the RfA, but based upon few last revisions, I thought meatpups were involved. But when I skimmed (very quick one) through RfA, I thought it canvassing was involved. But when I got free time, and a computer; I realised these were not the cases. For a newbie, there were a few familiar names like DDG, and black kite who are still active. —usernamekiran(talk) 18:48, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Ah, memories. . . . I actually thought the kid would make it that time. I was on vacation at the time and had to drive 50 miles for a computer. Things started out well, then blew up-- again. He was young. He was prolific. He was very, very good. And he was a little volatile, (as the brilliant sometimes are) with a propensity for dramaz. By the time I got home, the RFA had gone from looking like a certain pass to yet another debacle. Back when his user name was Giggy, he had a few things to say about my RFA. -- Dlohcierekim (talk) 03:45, 10 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
I was much more articulate in those days. Now, where'd I leave that Aricept? -- Dlohcierekim (talk) 03:49, 10 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

NPP Backlog Drive Appreciation

edit
  Thank You
Thank you for reviewing articles during the 2018 NPP New Year Backlog Drive. Always more to do, but thanks for participating. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 05:39, 31 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

As an additional note, for all those who reviewed 100 or more articles (SE barnstar or higher award) I am having a look at a dozen or so random articles out of the pages that they reviewed. It is going to take a while, but it will at least hopefully allow me to give reviewers who need to sharpen up some advice, as well as give us a decent baseline for the quality of reviewing. Cheers. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 06:25, 31 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Issue with an AfD - Redirect

edit

Hi, Kudz - I just tried to AfD the article Libtard and ran into a bit of trouble. It went through an AfD already Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Libtard and was supposed to be a #redirect to List of pejorative political puns which no longer exists. Apparently, the close at the 1st AfD was not closed properly. Can you or a tps fix it, please? Atsme📞📧 01:42, 3 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Atsme, sorry, this might be complicated and I can't just at the moment. It's Saturday 9am here and I have a pile of work in the office before I fly to visit a client tomorrow. TonyBallioni is often online at about this time, you may wish to ask him. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:36, 3 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Atsme, I'm a bit busy currently. Considering renominating it using Twinkle, and let me know if it works. If it doesn't, consider posting on WT:AFD. TonyBallioni (talk) 02:53, 3 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
AtsmeYou may need to look at the history, but much of what happened is only visible to admins. AFAICS there is no reason why a new AfD can't be started witrh a n umber '2' appendxed to it, so it may be a technical glitch. The most recent log entry for the page was:
00:23, March 8, 2017 NeilN deleted page Libtard (G3: Vandalism)]
Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:56, 3 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
I don't know why the article can't be nominated using Twinkle but I will help if I can. The redirect was deleted in February 2007 by CBDunkerson. I deleted the vandalism recreation in 2017. --NeilN talk to me 03:06, 3 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Apologies for any inconvenience or extra work my request for help may have caused. Promise I would have resolved the issue myself if I knew how. A similar issue happened to me once before with an AfD nom and if my memory serves, it required an admin with a bit more tech savvy than I, but I'll do what I can. I see you have interacted with Colman2000 before. Thus user is new the encyclopedia. He's made some contributions, but has become frustrated when his edits have been reverted for various reasons. Recently, he has asked several experienced editors to stop posting on his talk page. (Examples: Special:diff/823684121, Special:diff/823730533, special:diff/823713217) I think Colman2000 could use a warning from an admin that, if he asks editors not to interact with him, he risks missing their warnings and could end up facing a block. Hi Kudpung. I saw the advice you left on my talk page a little while ago. I don't mind being addressed as Colman, but I wrote on my userpage not to be called Coleman for two reasons: 1. My username doesn't have an "e" in the middle of it, and 2. I did it so I wouldn't confuse other editors. Thank you for writing Colin on my talk page, because that is my real name. Either way, thanks for the advice. Cheers to you! Colman2000 (talk) 14:57, 4 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Kudpung, can you take a look at the lede on the article. The editor User:Tataral keeps removing lead too long tags, several times now. The lede is huge, using the rationale that as it is above 18k in size, it can take 3 paragraphs, per WP:LEAD. But they are massive paragraphs, with the lead almost the half the size of the article. scope_creep (talk) 09:22, 5 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

SmartOwner - Restoring the page

edit

Hi Kudpung,

I see that you have deleted the SmartOwner page. I was unaware that this page was created twice before I submitted it again yesterday. The reasons for the previous deletion was cited as that the company was a small and unimportant one and that the content seemed like a brochure for the company (K.e coffman). Another reason was that it didn't have enough citations from reliable sources (Kagundu), and that it may go under any day (W Nowicki).

However, when I created the page, I did extensive research and was able to find citations from publications like the Financial Times, Tech.co, Moneycontrol and the Economic Times. The company has been around for six years now, and, according to FT's most recent ranking of Asia's fastest growing companies, is listed in the top 100 in the Asia-Pacific region and is the fastest-growing FinTech company in all of India. One thing I found really remarkable is that they actually have funded more square footage of real estate (13 million) than the largest equivalent American company, Fundrise (Fundrise doesn't have their sft funded listed publicly, but if you divide their total funded amount - $1.36 billion - by the average per sft price in the US - $125/sft on the low end - you come up with around 11 million). Another smaller Indian company, Square yards, also have a Wikipedia page

In short, SmartOwner appears to have extensive coverage and relevance now and I think Wikipedia can give unbiased content to readers looking for information regarding this firm.

I have created a new draft so that you can help me publish.

Please see citations here: 1. Moneycontrol 2. Financial Times 3. Be Money Aware 4. Economic Times 5. Finaacle 6. Candid Opinions 7. Outlook India 8. Finixpost 9. Tech.co

Kudpung, Thanks for the reply. I am not affiliated with this company and I am not trying to promote it. I am trying to write about successful companies which deserves mention. This particular company is the fastest growing Fintech company in the region. Please advise what I did wrong while I submitted this page. Is it because I created a new page which was already deleted?

Nicksaltr (talk) 13:24, 13 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Nicksaltr, unfortunately no company, indeed no topic on earth (or outside it) 'deserves' an article. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a reward scheme for successful subjects and topics. The place to get feedback is from the AfC reviewer - and I believe that's already been done. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 13:47, 13 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

coord election?

edit

The last Coord Election was held Feb-March last year. At my RfA candidate poll you mentioned that it was due to begin first week of Feb (as it did last year). Are you still preparing/planning? Some thoughts I had:

As the 'nominate someone else' method used last time didn't work out particularly well for retention of chosen candidates, I wonder if we should only do self-noms this time (though perhaps pinging a number of users asking them if they would like to nominate themselves might be useful)? Tony obviously might be keen on running, although he has been stepping back a bit due to other commitments and other admin work. Usernamekiran has been helping out behind the scenes quite a bit and might have potential as a coordinator, though is a bit light on experience. There are a few other people that I've noticed being particularly active on the reviewers discussion page and taking an interest in the processes of running the project (Galobtter and L3X1 off the top of my head). I think we still need 2, as 1 person is too fragile due to the potential for real life stuff to come up and can be a bit too much work at times. Ideally one should be an admin (obviously), though I plan on running for that soon and I have mass message sender rights, so I can send out the newsletters (if chosen as a coord) even if I am not chosen as an admin at RfA. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 06:03, 14 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

I've been having second thoughts about the timing of the election. In many ways I believe it might be better to wait until we have the results of ACTRIAL because a lot may change then. It would be a mistake to harass the the WMF right now for the work that needs to be done to upgrade the Curation system and its feed; otherwise, as my experience has shown over the years at offline discussions and real meetings with them, that if they believe the community will do major MediaWiki enhancements, they will be only too happy to allow it - and that's not what volunteers are paid for. There are a lot of politics and diplomacy involved and there is still after all these years no proper lines of communication between the Wikipedia projects and the WMF. A positive outcome for ACTRIAL may enable us to lobby at a higher executive level (or even through the Board) than going through Horn. You might have noticed that the community's focus at the moment is very much on what to do about paid editing, and that will depend on how the partolling is likely to be done, together with any new policies and filters that are under discussion. These things all take time, and I'm not decided yet if I will go to South Africa. I might go to sweden next year though, and in these issues, that's the kind of time frame we're looking at - remember, I started the ball rolling again in summer 2016 in Esino and we've only just got the NPP backlog down a bit with a lot still to go.Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 06:27, 14 February 2018 (UTC). I'll just ping TonyBallioni on this. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 06:30, 14 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
I've been stepping back again both because of RL stuff and other admin work, but if there was a coordinator position, I would still stand to give people the option: if they don't want me that's fine, but I think having an admin coordinator is helpful. NPP is still my main focus on Wikipedia, but a lot of the work I do with it now is the more delicate UPE type stuff (and copyright). Joe Roe is also involved and I think would do good work (and has a map). In terms of holding the elections: I agree with Kudpung that for political reasons it might be easier to wait until after the ACTRIAL stuff is all done. The results are good, but there will be a lot of other conversations going on that need to be had, and having an election for NPP in the middle of it probably wouldn't help further them.
