Proposed closing of Morriswa RFC
Hi, TCN7JM. As a person who has commented in the above RFC, your input on a possible closure of the RFC at Wikipedia talk:Requests for comment/Morriswa#Proposal to close would be appreciated. Thank you. --Rschen7754 05:09, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
Talk:Twojababcia
Strictly not gibberish but Polish. However, it looked like rather disconnected jottings someone was hoping to use as a private page, so I deleted it as an unconnected talk page (as it was, of course...).
- Okay. I thought for a second that it might be a foreign language, but not until after I CSD'd it. –TCN7JM 18:16, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

I have unreviewed a page you curated
Hi, I'm Mkdw. I wanted to let you know that I saw the page you reviewed, Colombo (city), and have un-reviewed it again. If you have any questions, please ask them on my talk page. Thank you. Mkdwtalk 23:06, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
Looks better now. It was definitely CSD-worthy before he/she added all the content. What I'm wondering is: Why didn't he/she just do that in the first place? –TCN7JM 23:09, 2 March 2013 (UTC)- Oh, the page already existed. Oops. :\ –TCN7JM 23:11, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)I've nominated it for CSD A10 because I discovered its a duplication of the article Colombo. They tried to make it a disambiguation page, but the city is clearly the primary topic and Colombo (disambiguation) already exists. Mkdwtalk 23:12, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
- Good idea. I honestly don't know what it was before the user copy/pasted the other article. –TCN7JM 23:14, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Why delete?
He friend, I received a private message of deleted my article Jaume Petit Ros. What have I done wrong?--Borja1970 (talk) 21:26, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
- You didn't do anything wrong. I just don't see how the guy is notable. I can't check the source on the article because I don't have the book, but I looked up more sources and pretty much none exist. –TCN7JM 21:29, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for you answer! I hope that you consider that the article should not be deleted, I'm expecting a writing team for a perfect translation into English. The are more articles from this man in other languages if you need to verify any sources. Hug. --Borja1970 (talk) 21:53, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

- Okay, I guess I can see where you're coming from. Please note that you shouldn't just translate the article exactly, that's pretty much plagiarism. I'm going to keep the deletion discussion up in case the community thinks differently about the article. –TCN7JM 21:59, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

Advert
Hey man. That one seems to be the result of multiple errors on my part. My error in perception is that an article ona large academic institution could be a candidate for deletion because of problems with the intent behind it, and I was wrong on that one. The other error was in expression, as my intended meaning wasn't that using the official site as a source was itself advertising, though the ambiguity of my comments could give that impression. What I meant (but perhaps failed to express) was that the issue was the account which created it; there were about a dozen accounts with similar names from 2011 to 2012 creating tons of articles relating to that institution, its founders and its current leaders. I nominated the articles en masse and some of them were clearly advertising, while it was pointed out to me that about half of the articles I nominated were on notable topics even if there was some funny business with the creators.
I would say that I intend to be more careful in the future were it not for the fact that this is the third time other editors have informed me that I majorly misunderstood deletion policy and it's somewhat embarrassing. In the future, I think I will just stick to commenting on deletion discussions if the desire strikes me but I don't intend on initiating them myself after this third incident. MezzoMezzo (talk) 03:37, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
- It's okay. Everyone screws up criteria every once in a while. I can somewhat see how you thought it was an advertisement, but it might just be people attending the institution that thought it should have an article and were mad when it got deleted, and so re-created it. Could be trolls, though that doesn't sound likely in this case. Could be anything really. I just don't think they were intentionally spamming or advertising. –TCN7JM 11:08, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
- You're probably right. Thanks for seeking clarification, though. I've made some blunders lately, and it's nice when other editors help to clarify things for their peers. MezzoMezzo (talk) 21:43, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I've fixed your closure of that MFD. The way I do that sort of thing is by using {{subst:mt}} and {{subst:mb}} at the top and bottom of the page, respectively. For AFD's you can replace those template names with "at" and "ab". Graham87 12:21, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Striking out call letters
It's done to indicate the airport is closed. When I first started here I created an article for each airport in Canada listed in the Canada Flight Supplement. Over time some of them were shut down, the official term in Canada is abandoned. Rather than have them all deleted they are tagged as defunct and the codes and runway info are struck out. I'm not sure about airports in other countries. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 16:56, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

Wikidata weekly summary #50
- Development
- Rolled out new code on wikidata.org. The new stuff you probably care about is:
- Improved references. They can now have multiple lines. This should make references much more useful. You can now have one reference with for example values for each of the properties "book", "author", "page" to describe one source.
- Fixed the prev/next links in diff view (bugzilla:45821)
- d:Special:EntitiesWithoutLabel now lets you filter by language and entity type
- Widget to add language links on the Wikipedias directly: added setting to enable/disable it per wiki and made it available for logged-in users only
- Widget to add language links on the Wikipedias directly: improved layout / size
- Made it so that the “edit links” link on Wikipedia is also shown when the corresponding item only has a link to this one language and no other languages
- Submitted improved Apache config patch to make wikidata.org always redirect to www.wikidata.org, which is awaiting code review and deployment.
- Improved the script that is responsible for taking Wikidata changes to the Wikipedias
- Added a few ways to better debug the script responsible for taking Wikidata changes to the Wikipedias. This should help with investigating why some changes take way to long to show up on the Wikipedias.
- Started work on automatically adding edited items to the user’s watchlist (according to preferences)
- Finished script for rebuilding search keys, so we can finally get case insensitive matches in a lot of places
- Support for multi-line references in diff view
- Selenium tests for inclusion syntax
- Improved parser function (that will be used to access Wikidata data on the Wikipedias) to accept property ID or label
- Increased isolation of data model component to increase clarity and visibility of bad dependencies
- Worked on schema access in the SQLStore (of the query component)

- When you edit a statement there is a little wheel in front of the text field. This lets you choose between “custom value”, “unknown value” and “no value”. “No value” means that we know that the given property has no value, e.g. Elizabeth I of England had no spouse. “Unknown value” means that the property has a value, but it is unknown which one -- e.g. Pope Linus most certainly had a year of birth, but it is unknown to us.

Your welcome/unhelpful edits message
Hello, I love the format & content of the welcome/unhelpful edits message you left on 24 March 2013 for User talk:121.219.159.24, very informative and helpful. Is this a template that can be accessed on Wikipedia or is it your creation? I would like to use it sometimes. Cheers. Melbourne3163 (talk) 03:28, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks. I didn't create the message, and it is a template. To use it, just type {{tlx|subst:welcome-anon-vandal}} on an IP's talk page, or you can activate Twinkle, and it'll be under the "Wel" tab. Make sure only to use it if the IP editor has made unhelpful edits that constitute vandalism, though. If now, the IP might get scared and leave Wikipedia, even if his/her edits were constructive. If you have any more questions feel free to ask me! TCN7JM 03:33, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for that & I'll make sure I only use it for unhelpful edits that constitute vandalism. Appreciate your offer of help in the future, I've only been actively editing for the last seven weeks or so and still a learner so likely to be handy.Melbourne3163 (talk) 03:48, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

Wikidata weekly summary #51
- Development
- The first 11 Wikipedias can now include data from Wikidata in their articles (If you want to see it in action see the infobox at it:Torino)
- Worked on automatic summaries for statements
- Worked on making properties accessible from the client using their label so you can use {{#property:executive director}} instead of {{#property:p169}} for example
- Made qualifiers ready for the next deployment (Please test. See details further down.)
- Selenium tests for qualifiers
- Fixed some issues related to QUnit testing
- Worked on improved handling and code design of multiple snak lists in the UI (qualifiers, references)
- Discussions/Press
- Denny wrote down how we’re planning to support queries on Wikidata. Feedback welcome.

- Other Noteworthy Stuff
- We’re currently carefully monitoring performance after the deployment of phase 2 on the first 11 Wikipedias. There seem to be a few small issues. As soon as they are resolved we'll deploy on English Wikipedia. All other Wikipedias are planned to follow very soon after that.
- Bye and a big thank you to Anja, Silke, Jens and John who are leaving the development team at the end of the month and will work on other cool things. You’ll be missed!
- Ever had any doubt about the possibilities of Wikidata? Talk to Wiri!
- We worked on reducing the time it takes for Wikidata edits to show up in the Wikipedias and made some progress. Daniel posted an analysis
- We started running a script on the database in order to make search on Wikidata case-insensitive. This should be finished in a few days and then search should be more useful.
- In addition to the above we have rolled out a new search box that suggests items. This should also make finding things on Wikidata a lot easier for you.
- We’re making some progress with Internet Explorer 8 support but there are a lot of issues with it (some outside our control). It’s unclear at the moment how much we can improve it still without spending an unjustified amount of time on it. You can follow the progress at bugzilla:44228
- Edits are now auto-confirmed for users with more than 50 edits and account age 4 days: bugzilla:46461
- Do you need old-style interwiki links for a sister project for example? This is for you
- The Wikimedia Foundation applied as a mentoring organisation for Google Summer of Code again. We have proposed some Wikidata projects for students to take up if the Foundation is accepted again. At least 2 other organisations that applied also propose Wikidata ideas. More details on that once we know which organisations are accepted.
- Denny hacked together a tree of life based on data from Wikidata
- Wikidata was added to wikipulse

- Add some missing descriptions to those items with the same label?
- Hack on one of these
Could I have 2 mins of your time? As I’ll be working on some other projects for Wikimedia Germany as well from now on the time I can spend on Wikidata will be reduced. This means I’ll have to figure out what is useful to spend time on. If you’re reading this could you let me know for example on this discussion page? Also if you have ideas how to improve the weekly summaries please post them. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk)

Roads
We get a lot of road articles submitted at Articles for Creation. I was wondering, given your expertise, if you could give me a few references as to which roads are considered notable, etc. so I know how to better approach those articles when I review them. Thank you! FoCuSandLeArN (talk) 21:02, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
- What country the road is in definitely matters. In the USA, all state highways, U.S. Routes, and Interstates are considered notable. County highways must be extremely important to be considered notable. Canada is pretty much the same as the USA, with provincial and territorial highways considered automatically notable and a few county highways, mostly in Ontario, as well. For a lot of countries outside North America, such as Croatia, mainly only roads at the national level are notable. Is there a certain article you had in mind? TCN7JM 21:09, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
- No, it's been a while since I reviewed one of those, but I ran into your user page and thought I'd better ask! I appreciate your help. And for US roads, is there a specific recommended source? Cheers, FoCuSandLeArN (talk) 21:20, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
- That depends on the state the road is in (I know, it gets pretty complicated). Anything from state Departments of Transportation are great. Newspaper sources are good. Of course, any kind of SPS, like this one, should be eliminated as soon as possible. In fact, that's kind of a minor goal for WP:USRD right now. Just general stuff. For examples of what a road article should look like, take a look at pretty much anything in the state of Michigan.
- Fair enough. If I have any questions I'll come to you in the future. Thank you again, FoCuSandLeArN (talk) 22:01, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

- Deployment of phase 2 on English Wikipedia is currently planned for April 8. The remaining Wikipedias are scheduled for April 10. As usual this might change if we run into problems along the way.
- There is now a page showing the current lag for changes propagating to the Wikipedias so they can show up in watchlists and recent changes for example. This should ideally be in the range of a few minutes. Right now it is higher because of some abnormally high bot activity but decreasing. Should be down to a few minutes soon.
- There’s now a badge you can add to Wikipedia articles to indicate there is data about it on Wikidata
- We hit Q10000000
- A Wikidata item in the wild ;-)
- Did you know?
- There are a number of task forces that take care of specific jobs or topics on Wikidata
- You can get database dumps to play with
- There are a lot of stats about Wikidata on http://stats.wikimedia.org
- Open Tasks for You
- Hit a random item and add a missing source?
- Hack on one of these
Based on feedback for last week’s call for comments we will continue this newsletter. However more community help will be needed. From now on they’ll be drafted at d:Wikidata:Status updates/Next and your help is very welcome.
Stats
What source are you using for stats updates? AutomaticStrikeout (T • C • Sign AAPT) 04:17, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
- Baseball-Reference.com. Should I mention that in the edit summary? TCN7JM 13:59, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
- You could. That's a fine source (I use it too, as you might have noticed). However, I was asking because if you use B-R, you should probably always update the stat date to read the previous date, not the current one. This is because Baseball-Reference.com updates the stats in the morning (I believe), instead of updating immediately following a game. Therefore, their stats will probably only be correct through the previous day. AutomaticStrikeout (T • C • Sign AAPT) 14:54, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
- Okay. I'll remember that. Thanks for the heads-up. TCN7JM 14:54, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
- No problem. Thanks for helping with the updates. AutomaticStrikeout (T • C • Sign AAPT) 15:06, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
