Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

  Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

A barnstar!

  The Original Barnstar
Thank you for cleaning up Trial of Sam Ke Ting to meet WP:BLPPRIVACY! After nearly 3 months of the article being dormant in draftspace, it seems we both came across the article within 2 minutes of each other. Out of all the possible AfC submissions, this was pretty coincidental and lucky I'd say. Cheers! Utopes (talk / cont) 19:12, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the barnstar, Utopes. I was about to move the page to a more central naming and saw the article moved from draftspace - so, yes it was definitely a weird but also amazing coincidence! Cheers. – The Grid (talk) 13:14, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hi The Grid. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
  • Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.
  • Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:43, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

Thank you, @HJ Mitchell. I know that was quite a queue for the user rights. – The Grid (talk) 12:24, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello The Grid:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 1700 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:25, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Populated place

Hi. This is regarding a discussion back in January Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 January 15. My comment was mostly about a concern that well-intentioned editors, seeing categories in the form "...by populated place", might populate them with with not only just towns and cities, but also counties, provinces and states.

I just now stumbled on to an example of this at Category:English people by county and occupation, where the creator User:Luis9595 has added it to Category:People by populated place in England.

Again this does not seem like an unreasonable assumption for Luis9595 to make. A county is after all, a "populated place" by ordinary definition. Your reply quotes a definition that doesn't really clarify the point. Cities, towns and other entities with human habitation are classified as populated places. "Other entities" can still be interpreted as including counties. In other words, we don't seem to have anything defining those categories' scope as being restricted to cities, towns and villages.

I remain concerned by the trend of naming categories like this, but for now, how do we handle this case and others like it? Do we just remove the parent category with no explanation? What would be a good edit summary if one is compelled leave one? What would be the best link to an explanation of the scope? --DB1729talk 18:14, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

Whoops, I seem to have missed this initially. I was going by the definition through the Census Board but after looking at the discussions for notability pertaining to geography, it seems coming up with a one size fits all is problematic. I agree with a county fitting as a populated place. For the U.S. I think even the Census Board is backing away and letting local jurisdictions to define their areas for their state before forcing their hand. Has there been a discussion about this in the meantime? – The Grid (talk) 13:50, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I'm not aware of any further discussion. I have, since then, removed categories from a couple pages with the edit summary: For the purposes of "...by populated place" categories, the scope is essentially as described at Populated place (Human settlement) e.g. hamlets, villages, towns and cities[66][67] --DB1729talk 22:36, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
