rescaling fair use images
Hello Tim, seems Dashbot stopped rescaling fair use images november 24, though otherwise active.[1]. Is there a specific reason or can it simply be relaunched? Thanks. --Tikiwont (talk) 11:13, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
Too Fast!!!
Please give me time to edit and build a page for Wikipedia. I am trying to do this but working slowly as I have a job and can't dedicate every moment of the day to it. However when I come back to the work and try to finish it I find it has been vandalised by bots. Please make your bot less efficient. I suggest only working on pages that have not been changed for (say) 2 weeks. I would appreciate you switching off the bot until you have done this modification. Thank you. Mike Young (talk) 17:36, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
P.S. I would like to spend my time making a new article not arguing about this... Thanks.

Template testing with your bot?
Hi Tim1357,
Steven Walling and I have been doing some A/B testing of common user warnings (we have a task force and documentation about this project here), and I was wondering if you'd be interested in letting us run a test with DASHBot. We're just about to start a test on ImageTaggingBot, which also delivers image warnings to user talk. You can take a look at the redesigned messages here. The gist is, we tweak the message, randomly deliver the test and control templates for about a month, and then analyze the data to see if there's any effect in terms of editor retention, improvement in following directions, etc. Let me know if you'd like to submit your bot to science for a few weeks :) I'm around on IRC most of the time (nick: Maryana) if you want to chat more. Thanks! Maryana (WMF) (talk) 21:31, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

Issues with DASHBot Fair-Use Resize Bot Task
This DASHBot task continues to run outside its approved parameters (should reduce the image width to 325 px).
This issue has been discussed with you on a couple of occasions, but no explanations have been forthcoming; and DashBot continues to reduce album covers to a width of approximately 400px. See: File:EverAfterThreeO'Clock.jpg

DASHBot's edit to Abominations (album)
DASHBot seems to have messed up here. This is the edit it made and this is after my correction and what I assume it intended. The format of the original ratings was somewhat unusual (I did not have a part in writing it), but unfortunately the bot made it somewhat worse. I am informing you so that you can consider rewriting or adding to the current bot code to make it edit more conservatively in such circumstances. I have not attempted to shut the bot off as this may be a rare case. --MegaSloth (talk) 19:28, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Image: File:Escort vol13 no3.jpg is referenced in page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escort_(magazine)
This image should not be deleted as,
I have completed the fair use rationale for this image thus:
Description: Front cover of Escort Vol 13, no 3 illustrating original cover design
Source: photograph of Escort Vol 13, no 3 taken by myself
Article: Escort (magazine)
Portion used: Full cover
Low resolution?: lower resolution than the original, so cannot be used for counterfeit purposes
Purpose of use: To illustrate original design of magazine up to and including 1995
Replaceable?: It is not replaceable with an uncopyrighted or freely copyrighted image of comparable educational value, as all issues of the magazine are similarly copyrighted
Other information: This cover design has been discontinued, hence it gives historic information about the magazine
It qualifies as fair use on the basis of:
This image is of a magazine cover, and the copyright for it is most likely held by either the publisher of the magazine or the individual contributors who worked on the cover depicted. It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of magazine covers
- to illustrate the publication of the issue of the magazine in question
- with the publication name either visible on the image itself or written in the image description above,
on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Silver Barnet (talk) 19:43, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
Request for Interview Regarding Wikipedia Bots
Greetings Tim1357-
My name is Randall Livingstone, and I am a graduate student at the University of Oregon, currently collecting data for my dissertation on Wikipedia editors who create and use bots and assisted editing tools, as well as editors involved in the initial and/or ongoing creation of bot policies on Wikipedia. As a member of BAG and an active member of the bot community, I would very much like to interview you for the project at a time and in a method that is most convenient for you (Gchat, another IM client, Skype, email, telephone, etc.). I am completely flexible and can work with your schedule. The interview will take approximately 30-45 minutes.
My dissertation project has been approved both by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Oregon, and by the Research Committee at the Wikimedia Foundation. You can find more information on the project on my meta page.
Please let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to hearing from you to set up a time to chat. Thank you very much.

Hi Tim,
DASHBot recently removed an image from a page I edited. However, I found the image on a Wikipedia article and I was wondering why I am not allowed to use it in another wikipedia page. The image is not free, I understand, but it seemed to me that it qualified as fair use. Thanks,

Question about image resizing
I was just curious about the resizing done by your bot. I've often been too lazy to resize a non-free image before uploading, because I know that your bot will do my work for Me. But I Am curious if the resizes are smaller than they should Be. Given that the default thumbnail/frameless size is a user preference that can Be set up to 300px, wouldn't it Be desirable to keep images to that size when possible? For example the image File:Sleeping Dogs – Square Enix video game cover.jpg has been reduced to 270px × 390px. The idea is that the images are No larger than they need Be, but 270px makes them smaller than other images. Obviously it may Be different for overly tall images, but Category:Non-free Wikipedia file size reduction request says 400*400 is the threshold, and the new size is significantly smaller than that. I realize that this may not Be an issue for those who are reading WP on 4x3 screens or phones, but with a large widescreen monitor it does look overly-small. ▫ JohnnyMrNinja 19:09, 9February 2012(UTC)
- I agree with you JohnnyMrNinja. Originally the bot was set to reduce to 400*400 pixles. However, about a month ago someone complained (rightly) that I wasn't doing what was approved in the bot's BRFA. If you think I should, I could open a request for comment, or start a thread at the village pump to change the default back to 400x400 (or higher). Tim1357 talk 01:56, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Speedy Deletion
Hello! I am creating a wiki page for public figure and relationship expert April Masini. Earlier I moved the page to "April Masini" but after reviewing it, I realized that more references are needed. Can the request for Bot:Speedy deletion of April Masini be removed from the page and userfied again? Thank you.G|M|Hayes| 05:51, 9 February 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gmhayes4 (talk • contribs)

Yes, that is correct. I got help via chat on the issue a while after I wrote to you. Thanks for helping. I'm working on making the article better.--G|M|Hayes| 23:10, 11 February 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gmhayes4 (talk • contribs)
Speedy Deletion of game screenshots
Hello. I am writing an article on an old arcade game titled "Iron Horse". The article has not yet been reviewed and approved for publication but further editing is encouraged by Wikipedia so I uploaded a pair of screenshots captured by myself under the non-free category with the respective license tag, but they were speedy deleted by DASHBot mere hours later. Was this caused by the article not being yet approved? Can I re-link the images once the article is reviewed? Thanks in advance. Beacon of Hope (talk) 08:07, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Fair-use images on Talk pages
An image in Talk:Port_an_Eilean_Mhòir_ship_burial#Renaming got autoflagged by your bot, according to a message it left. It was used as part of an important discussion about article naming, as rationale for the article name. It's still being used there. I suggest that fair-use images being used in Talk pages for important article-relevant purposes shouldn't be flagged by your bot. --Sbp (talk) 13:31, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
One final albums run?
Hi Tim, how are you? I'd stepped away from the album reviews drive a while ago, but I thought I'd get in touch with you and request one or two last final runs with DASHbot. We're at 72.6% complete, with 14,431 articles to go. Would it be possible to just let the bot get the last 25–28% taken care of? Like I mentioned, I haven't followed any album conversations in a long time, so maybe there were technical difficulties. But if not, I'd think it'd be safe to assume the majority of DASHbot's work will be perfect, and any few errors would be corrected later on—a smaller percentage than what we're at currently. Your bot was so helpful, and this way we'll finally be done with the matter! Let me know what you think. Thanks so much!! – Kerαunoςcopia◁galaxies 07:07, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Minor bot problem
I think there's a small issue with your bot as shown by this edit. I believe it erred in the first change as it would appear it changed plain text. As it was just text it didn't need replacing. It's not a major problem, and certainly one that's not worth me finding an admin to shut the bot off, but I'd appreciate if you could take a look. Dpmuk (talk) 06:34, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

:Hi, I like what I see so far but I have a few queries:
- The current sandbox list only shows articles created between January 2007 and February 2008, is the search actually dealing with articles 3 years old and older or just within a given specified year?
- Given how large the list is, a plaintext total of articles in the list as a header would be helpful.
- Can the editcounts for each article be enumerated in the list?
Thanks for picking this task up Tim. baa! radda 04:49, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- Hey baa. I'm pretty sure it includes every year before 2008. I kinda hacked the query a bit so that it would run quicker, so it wouldn't surprise me if something weird was happening. I'm re-running the query right now. The new report will have a count of (not deleted) edits to the page. The results should be automatically posted here as soon as the query finishes (in about an hour I'd say). Hopefully that helps. Tim1357 talk 01:03, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Some are likely to have been tagged for major deficiencies (lack of sources, etc.) and be major candidates for deletion, and I'd like to take some time to go through a pile of them and PROD/AFD those that have been basically discarded without improvement and/or that aren't notable but got ignored.Tyrenon (talk) 07:26, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Has DASHBot given up on the UBLPs?
G'day Tim, just noticed that DASHBot hasn't updates the UBLP lists for over a week. Whilst I doubt many people are watching the lists any more, the total has just jumped up over 400 for the first time in a long time. Could you please try to restart the bot. Thanks, The-Pope (talk) 16:33, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
- No, I don't think it's given up. The server that houses DB has gone down. :( Apparently they're working on fixing it, so I haven't really worried about it, but it's been 11 days now. I've started it manually tonight on a different box, and I'll remember to move all of the reoccurring tasks to a more stable system as soon as I can. The bot should start doing its normal routine in a few minutes. Cheers! Tim1357 talk 03:39, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

dead link bot
Hi there Tim, I just saw the. Deadlink bot in action and I think it's a great idea. A couple of suggestions: can it preferentially _target refs marked with deadlink, even if they aren't in a cite template? Can archives found outside the +- 1 Month range be suggested on the talk page (and maybe expand to -1, +6 months if it still seems accurate for pages not archived that often)? And I think the "archive on placement" idea is the best long term solution - just not sure if it would put too much strain on the archive servers. Cheers, The-Pope (talk) 06:05, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Wikiproject Watchlist
Hi Tim, thanks for this nice tool! I was wondering whether you could add an option to include tagged pages in other namespaces, as this would facilitate administration of the project. Cheers, Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 10:35, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
Dashbot
Is dashbot supposed to have the bot flag set? It spams my watchlist every day and I cannot use the hide bots option to suppress it. Tim! (talk) 07:20, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
- Bots can elect to not flag individual edits with the bot flag, often the reason to choose this is to bring an edit to the attention of humans. Josh Parris 09:39, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
- Then said bot should be running much slower to give humans a chance to review those edits... Tim! (talk) 20:31, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
DASHBOT archived a non-dead urls
Hi Tim1357, wanted to inform you that DASHBOT had archived many of Manchester United (and Newton Heath) ref urls and still do, even tho they are not dead. Maybe bcuz they are flash versions the bot thinks they are dead.
– HonorTheKing (talk) 18:40, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- It continues doing so today aswell, any chance you can check why it does it.
– HonorTheKing (talk) 01:39, 8 March 2012 (UTC)- Hi Honor the King, sorry I didn't reply the first time. DASHBot is archiving links preemptively now, looking for archives within 1.5 months of the access date. The bot is using the
|deadurl=
parameter to indicate wether or not the link is perceived to be "dead". Tim1357 talk 02:24, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Remember the Bot idea I brought up here? Wanna tell me why no one's pushing it? The editor who suggested it really wants it done. Can you please, ya know, make it a thing? Ten Pound Hammer • (What did I screw up now?) 04:34, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

Please rotate the image to its upright and locked position prior to takeoff. Yworo (talk) 20:52, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
- Haha, thanks. I fixed it and re-added it to the article. I normally upload about 100 at a time with a script I wrote and go through immediately after to fix the handfull that aren't right side up. Tim1357 talk 23:22, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

Category:Non-free Wikipedia file size reduction request
Hi there! Just a heads-up that I've nominated Category:Non-free Wikipedia file size reduction request for renaming to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests. If you've any objections to the change or if it's likely to break the bot, I'd appreciate if you would let me know here or at WP:CFD/S. Cheers! -- Black Falcon (talk) 16:35, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
- Ok. The bot's been updated. Thanks for the heads up. Tim1357 talk 15:07, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for your prompt attention. The category should be renamed shortly. Best, -- Black Falcon (talk) 16:04, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
Dashbot causing template overload
Hi Tim - can you take a moment and check out this page. I see you made one edit post bot cleanup, but we were still busting through the template limits so the reflist was not showing up. Not sure what the solution is - perhaps the bot needs to check to see if its edits have caused a page to go into this category and if so self revert? I've undone the bot edits for now, but please feel free to rerun once the reflist issue is solved. 7 04:39, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hmm. That is strange. I don't really know of any way to prevent the bot from over-loading the template parser thingy. I guess periodically checking that category is the best way to go. I think it's infrequent enough that I can do it by hand. Thanks for getting back to me!. Tim1357 talk 15:27, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. 7 06:42, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
