More hello
editI'm saying hello as well - although I'm a fairly new at being a "serious" Wikipedian I've been getting a bit addicted lately and clocking some serious edits. Your work looks good to me - infoboxes rule! The only other thing I try and do if I can is add an image if I kind find a free use one or fair use if its a logo/album/movied etc... but that is an extra hassle Madmedea 14:07, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Madmedea. Nice to know I'm not the only newbie around! Thanks for the suggestion. I actually wanted to include an image, as one is available on their website and Template:Infobox_School does provide for an image to be included, but got a bit lost while reading about copyright/license tags, public domain, fair use, rationales and whatnot. I'll give it another shot though at a later stage—preferably after getting some sleep :-)

- Yeah it took me a little bit of to-ing and fro-ing before the I got the hang of it - and knowing the different rules between Wikpedia and Wikipedia commons. The basics are:
- if you took the photo/made the drawing and are happy for others to use it - uploaded it to Wikipedia commons, choose the license you want to release it under (or go public domain), and then link from the article to there.
- If someone else has created it and posted it somewhere with a GNU or Creative Commons license or it is in the public domain the, that is allowable under the Wikipedia commons so upload it and link to it stating where you got it from and the licence it is under.
- For everything else you can only upload it to Wikipedia and then its only allowable if you tag it "fair use" and provide an additional rationale. This is most commonly used for album covers, DVD covers, company logos etc. For examples see: Image:WIEGOlogo.gif and Image:BangDVDcover.jpg. Sorry for rambling... Merge?
editI'd advise against making seperate articles for minor characters in a manga. If there's little chance the article can evolve past a small stub, you might consider merging this content into the main article. Friday (talk) 17:40, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

- I'm afraid I've just finished doing so. A merge was proposed for the article Minor Characters of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, but it was felt that merging the two would make the article JoJo's Bizarre Adventure too cluttered (see the talk page). I do understand your reasoning though. In the end it was quite difficult to decide what to do, but I created separate pages since a lot of the sections on Minor Characters of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure already exist as separate pages anyway.
- I've:
- Created new pages for each of the sections at Minor Characters of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure that already contained any information regarding a character and did not already exist as another page
- Linked to it from the wikitables at JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
- Tagged them with
{{Expand|date=January 2007}}
, as was done to the original article - Added them to Category:JoJo's Bizarre Adventure characters
- Changed Minor Characters of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure to redirect to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

Etheric Projection
editI noticed that you took an interest in editing the EP section to the astral projection article.
I wanted to let youk know that I had to reverse some of your edits, not because they were incorrect, but because there was a very specific reason why I needed certain parts to be grouped together a certain way. You see, when they deleted the etheric projection article, they ignored all the evidence that it exists as a phenomenon (not to mention made many silly and subjective comments) not synonimous with astral projection-- the purpose of grouping some of the sources together a certain way, is to make the case blatently obvious. I hope to have the etheric projeciton article returned one day, so what is there is meant to build the case to people who are more willing to actually look at the evidence.

- What would really help, is get other people to agree that the two kinds of psychic projection (astral and etheric, et al) are deserving of their own articles, or should be merged into one "OBE" entitled article. - I think there is some confusion here. I am not an admin, nor did I delete the Stylah article. I simply responded to your request for help and explained that the article was deleted, pointing to the archived AfD. I see the article was deleted again on 12:47, 6 February 2007 by Jimfbleak (see [1] for the logs). The comment he used was: article about a person, group of people, band, club, company or website that does not assert the importance or significance of the subject. (CSD A7). I'll also post this message on Jimfbleak's talk page. You can contact him here. However, I see he is on a wikibreak for the rest of February, so it might be a better idea to contact the admin that deleted the article the first time around (Can't sleep, clown will eat me - contact him here).

I am sorry to bother you with such a basic questions. It is not that I am being lazy. I have been learning about MediaWiki and Wiki in general day and night in last month or so. But, there are so many new things, languages, codes, and rules to learn. I find deciphering codes faily easy but familiarizing with different jargons and different utilities very challenging. I can create or edit a template, but I get totally lost with where I put it and what I do with it. I assume you are a very busy person and I do not expect you to be able to pay attention to every new member's inadequacy. - I can, however, divulge the following information about the workings of Template:helpme, as known to me so far:
- Basically, content on Wikipedia (and thus also the WikiMedia software) are divided up into different namespaces. For example, normal run-of-the-mill articles exist in the "main" namespace; that is, articles without a ':' in their name. In contrast with this, templates exist in the "Template" namespace. So, when looking at the helpme template, you would visit Template:helpme (note the "Template:" in front of the template name). Creating new templates works similar to creating new articles—just create a new article, as normal, but call it, for example: "Template:helpmeplease" (without the quotes). So, on your installation of MediaWiki, you would start a new page, and call it "Template:helpme" (without the quotes), and then copy and paste the code from here into your new article (template). You can, of course, customize the content as you see fit, and will probably need to change some of the links in the template code because they'll point to pages that might not exist on your installation of MediaWiki. Once done, save the page, and you would have created the new template.
- What's important to understand is that the helpme template, apart from displaying the helpme notice when added to a user's talk page, also adds the username of the person on whose talk page the template was added, to a particular category—in the case of the helpme template on Wikipedia, to Category:Wikipedians looking for help. A "bot" (short for "robot", which is an automated program) then regularly checks that category and reports any users waiting for help in an IRC channel, monitored by volunteer helpers, such as myself. On Wikipedia, this is done by a bot called "helpmebot", in the #wikipedia-bootcamp channel on the Freenode IRC network. The bot keeps doing so, every 3 minutes, until the user requesting help has been responded to, and the {{helpme}} notice has been removed from his/her talk page.
- So, to get the helpme template to work on your installation of MediaWiki, the way it does on Wikipedia, you would have to create a bot similar to "helpmebot". As far as I know, on Wikipedia, the "helpmebot" monitoring Category:Wikipedians looking for help was created by User:pgk—also an administrator on English Wikipedia. You might try asking him for permission to copy and use the source code of the bot he developed. Feel free to refer him to this message, if you want, for context.

Personal attacks on me
editThank you for your reply to my query. I don't think talking to the other parties involved will be any helpful; I've already asked them not to attack me, and the results have been further attacks. They refuse to respond to my claims about source reliability on the grounds that I've done O.R. to check the sources. Here's a sample of what I've gotten:
"Aben, I'm sorry but I think it is time you cut your losses and stop arguing. It is beginning to sound like denial."
"Your claims are irrelevant, since they are ooriginal research. (...) I think its time to quit, bud."
"If you value your time, you'll give this silliness up."
"Abenyosef has created a username seemingly for the sole purpose of advancing this material, and other anti-Zionist propaganda, on this article (and apparently no other article). He keeps on referring to the presumpton of good faith, but that presumption is rebuttable. At this point, a consensus has spoken loud and clear, and yet he persists. I believe, at this point, that he has lost the presumption of good faith. At this point, he is merely troll pushing an ideology through the usual misinformation, propaganda, and outright lies."
And, finally, the most stunning attack was:
"Actually, WP:NOR applies quite explicitly to the way sources are chosen and used. It baffles me that you would imagine you understand Wikipedia's content policies better than I do. You've been editing Wikipedia for 2 weeks, almost all of it to this article and Talk: page; the hubris in imagining you have the content policies down pat is astonishing."
This is amazing because the author of this attack is an admin and is on the arbitration committee.

- Well, complaints about admins are primarily dealt with by other admins. Given my non-involvement in this dispute and lack of knowledge about the specifics, I would suggest taking your complaint to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents first. That is the correct place to post an open, informal complaint over the behaviour of an admin.
- From Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User conduct#Dealing with grievances: If you think an administrator has acted improperly against you or another editor, you should express your concerns directly to the administrator responsible. Try to come to a resolution in an orderly and civil manner. However, if the matter is not resolved between the two parties, you can take further action according to Wikipedia:Resolving disputes. - Do you know what's going on with my entry for Still Pending? It has been flagged for deletion. But it also looks like it has been the subject of some spam? I believe that it meets the notability requirements, as you have stated. I don't exactly understand how to read the revision history. I could also use some help defending the notability of the group. - There has been a recent influx of interest in the article, it would seem. I've reverted two seemingly bad-faith edits, one by 124.178.210.158 (talk), who almost completely blanked the page, and another by 138.217.209.191 (talk). They have both been warned.
- As for the rest, Wikieditor07 seems to feel that the article lacks notability and is being used for promotional purposes. He completely blanked the article, twice, but both edits were reverted, the first time by Ryulong, and the second time by an automated bot, VoABot II (see here). After that, he tagged the article for speedy deletion with {{db-spam}} and removed all External Links. The nomination for speedy deletion was reviewed by an administrator, NawlinWiki (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA), and declined, because it "asserts notability w/indep. sources" (edit summary). As such, it looks like the article will be taken to AfD instead, if it's nominated again, where its deletion can be debated instead of simply speedy deleting.

Newbie?
editHey, Xhantar! Last night you helped me with problems regarding "Musical Notation". (I am afraid I am a bit of a computer illiterate, and should have considered a simple cache cleanup.) I am also a relative "newbie" at Wikipedia (since last summer). I looked at your edit count. Why don't you add another "box" to your user page, i.e.,

. I am nearing 1,000 edits, and can't wait to "step up"! It's amazing how quickly the edits add up!
What truly surprises me is your ability to help me, when you are a newbie yourself. I suppose you simply understand computers better than I do! I want to express my appreciation of not only your helpfulness, but your politeness. (Although I rarely call for help, I know some "helpers" can be be slightly insulting, in contradiction of the most simple Wiki policy, "be nice". You were nice!)
I agree, we need a MALE term for "Wikifairy". I've hesitated to add this tag to my user page for such reasons. Despite the fact that fairies are NOT defined by gender or sexual orientation, the colloquial usage of the word "fairy" (a derogatory expression for homosexual) can hardly be changed, even through the might of Wikipedia. In fact, I taught a "piano major" a couple of years ago (a most masculine fellow) whose hero and role-model was Peter Pan (a fairy)...he simply wanted, more than anything, to be able to fly! Might I suggest the term Wiki-Wizard?

- I really need some more mainspace edits, actually, as it's required by a few of the more advanced editing tools, like AutoWikiBrowser, which I'd love to play around with. Maybe I'll start reverting some vandalism; I suppose reverts count towards mainspace edits?

Yeah, WOW! There are several edit counters. My favourite is Interiot's [2]. It gives a breakdown of your kinds of edits, articles you've worked on, talk edits, etc. I think editing to any Article probably counts as "mainspace", which would include reverting vandalism, and probably even improvements in spelling, grammar, wording, etc. You'll love it!

editI've been to the bootcamp; no one answered anything I said, including "Hello!" haha I'm familiar with IRC, it's cool. So I went to #wikipedia, didn't know anyone, and left. But now I know they are there, and I'm learning to communicate. I learn best by observing, so I learned how to put in numbered references, except at the bottom where they match the [1] in the text. I had to just manually add the numbers [1], [2], etc. Wiki is addicting. I have neglected my personal writing for two days. editXhantar, I didnot realize the factual numbers of references to the subject pretensions of perceptions would be for discussion. It was meant to support the idea that the subject "pretensions of perceptions" was important enough not to delete completely. Would it be different if my own comment did not addend the info? - Funny enough, someone else asked the exact same question right below yours at the Village pump, and it's starting to show up semi-regularly at the Help Desk as well. I'll see how it goes, but it might become a good candidate for including in the list of FAQs on those pages.
- Another idea I had was to simply have a little explanatory note appear as part of that blue-tinted popup, with a link to the already-existing FAQ about the "issue" on the NavPopups page. Maybe I'll go bug Lupin about that...

editThanks for your help. I've posted to AIV before, and I was going to put it there, but this seemed like a different issue, so decided to just ask for help. The WP:3RR page mentions posting to administrator noticeboard, and the noticeboard says to post at AIV, so I eventually posted it there, even though AIV says that unless you're using a particular template, it might get skipped. So I'm not so confident, because there's a lot more information I needed to put in. In any case, I think that whatever gets done, the documentation for such issues should be more clear. How do I complain about Harassment?
editA user 1Canuck2 / Peeldog / Al Macloed has successfully removed my company from Wikipedia. I created over a dozen articles about motion capture and listed my company. Several other manufacturers also listed their products and all I did was to make sure their claims were reasonable. This user removed my company and then created several sock puppets to make me look bad and stupid (ok I helped with the making me look stupid by over reacting a few times, but I at least took that in stride and tried to fix my mistakes.) Now he's continuing the charade externally using wikipedia to show that several users here (which I think are all him) are fighting against me on my own talk page. http://forums.mocap.ca/viewtopic.php?t=92. I admit defeat in trying to promote my company, but I object to being singled out and our competition and 1Canuck2/Peeldog/Alastair Macleod being allowed to promote his company. Go ahead and ban me from being here for blanking my page (which doesn't matter since they can just look at the history), but at least keep the playing field level. Still Pending AFD Discussion
editHello Xhantar. You have been helpful in my understanding of Wiki in the past, so I look to you again for assistance. An article which I originally created for Still Pending was recently the subject of a speedy delete. The delete was subsequently overturned Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2007_April_17. It has now been nominated again (less than a month since the overturn), this time in AFD Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Still_Pending_(2nd). I don't really understand how an article that failed to be deleted due to notability is now the subject of deletion review yet again. Can anyone nominate an article for AFD any time they wish, even if the article hasn't substantially changed since the previous overturn? Perhaps you can shed some light on how this works. South African Wikimedia Chapter

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference
editHello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.
On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true
. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false
in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.
For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.
