Naming convention we have arrived at for Maori names and also local names

edit

Felt that current practice of following the Geographic board’s official naming is best, since it provides an authoritative answer and ends discussion. Other ways are prone to endless argument. Also some discussion of having alternative names or pronunciation of places and this was felt to be a bad idea in most cases, for similar reasons.

edit
  • Need full guide to NZ copyright material (dates, anonymous works, etc) for average users, especially “grey areas”.
    • Ramir will study the subject and write an informal guideline (Wikipedia:Copyrights/New Zealand), which should then wiki-evolve through consideration of specific cases.
    • Point to Alexander Turnbull library guide - this factsheet explains NZ copyright in a nutshell, with the added authority of it coming from the highest government source. Linking to it on any image/file description page when you try to explain the intricacies of NZ copyright law is encouraged.
    • Some organisations may be interested in helping.
  • Getting PD or GFDL images of people from the government and big companies like TVNZ
    • User:SimonLyall and Mendors to help setup group to identity material we would like and approach holders about getting it released.

The New Zealand chapter of Wikimedia Foundation

edit

Skipped due to the proponent’s absence.

Coverage of New Zealand topics

edit
  • Things are not too bad now but many gaps, some small villages are not covered (see List of schools in New Zealand).
  • Plenty of biographies still to be written or past stub status
  • Suggestion that standarized official climate data could be added to articles about towns/cities (see Auckland).
  • Tidy List of New Zealand companies, perhaps to NZX 50 and those at least as "big" as 50th.

Wikimania 2008 in Auckland

edit
  • Some discussion on the bid.
  • It was felt that further discussion was needed, especially budget, size, timing and sponsorship. Some expressed concern that New Zealand was not large/organised enough to hold this yet, and that Australia would be a better bet if it should happen in the general area.
  • Alternative of a NZ-oriented event suggested.

Time zones

edit

There was some discussion about people becoming admins, what was involved and expected etc.

New Zealand’s media attention to Wikipedia

edit
  • No contact for Wikimedia in NZ, there doesn't appear to be major call for this, however.

Anonymity and Conflict of Interest

edit

Some discussion re editing about companies you work for or are involved with. General advice is to create a separate more anonymous account for this.

Wikipedia &c. as an online educational something

edit

Ramir will describe his idea at length at the end of September.

Video WikiNews

Proponent absent. Skipped.

Relevant upcoming events

edit
  • Local Body and District Health Board elections
Probably go with single page unless it becomes good. Noted that results are hard to gather later in time so should be captured when published in the papers soon afterwards. Probably don't need coverage of every race.
  • David Bain
Retrial coming up, article needs watching.

Next meeting and Meetup timetables

edit

6 months felt to be a good interval, geo-notice seemed to work but realistically NZ should be treated as one unit since splitting further will not work well. Encourage other cities to hold meetings also. Discussion on use of meeting room venues (rather than pubs/cafes) as a quieter venue is required.
