An anachronous map of the British Empire

The British Empire WikiProject was formed in order to foster better articles within its scope with a spirit of cooperation. The participants are a group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the British Empire. This WikiProject is modelled on Wikiproject Commonwealth realms and was started in June, 2008. It is our hope that this project will provide an amicable atmosphere in which the efforts of interested Wikipedians can be focussed. What is the British Empire?

edit

The British Empire in 1897, marked in the traditional colour for imperial British dominions on maps

The British Empire was the largest empire in history and, for over a century, was the foremost global power. It was a product of the European Age of Discovery, which began with the maritime explorations of the 15th century, that sparked the era of the European colonial empires. By 1921, the British Empire held sway over a population of about 458 million people, approximately one-quarter of the world's population and about a quarter of Earth's total land area. As a result, its legacy is widespread, in legal and governmental systems, economic practice, militarily, educational systems, sports, and in the global spread of the English language. At the peak of its power, it was often said that "the sun never sets on the British Empire", a phrase that is still true even as of 2018, because its span across the globe ensured that the sun was always shining on at least one of its numerous colonies, protectorates, territories or subject nations.

During the five decades following World War II, most of the territories of the Empire became independent. Many went on to join the Commonwealth of Nations, a free association of independent states. See also Wikiproject British Overseas Territories.

Scope

edit

For a list of the articles deemed most important to this project see Wikipedia:WikiProject British Empire/Important.

The project generally considers any article related to the British Empire to be a valid topic. A simple (but accurate) way of checking which pages are within our scope is to follow click "What links here" in the "toolbox" section of this page. The scope template is added to pages within our WikiProject. Anyone may add an article to the scope, provided they are sure that it is relevant to the project. An article may be in the scope of multiple WikiProjects. Where this is true one should be sure to contact the other WikiProjects too so as to avoid conflicts. If you are not sure whether to add the template, propose it at the talk page first.

Templates

edit

For templates relevant to the British Empire see this page.

  • The scope template: This template is used to add articles to our project's scope. The scope template can be found here.
  • The Userbox: The userbox may be used by anyone who is a member of our project. Using the userbox helps people to identify Wikipedians as members of this project. The userbox template can be found here.
