Welcome to the lichen task force of WikiProject Fungi. We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of lichen taxa and various related subjects. New participants are most welcome; please join us by adding your name to the participant list below.

Scope

edit

As of 14 December 2024, there are 4,261 articles within the scope of WikiProject Lichen task force, of which 3 are featured and 54 are good articles. This makes up 0.06% of the articles on Wikipedia, 0.03% of all featured articles and lists, and 0.13% of all good articles. Including non-article pages, such as talk pages, redirects, categories, etc., there are 13,860 pages in the project.

  • Lichen covers all lichen taxa (species, genera, families, etc.) and fungi typically studied by lichenologists, such as lichenicolous fungi. The task force also covers other articles within the spectrum of lichenology, such as lichenological terminology, notable lichenologists and chemical substances made by lichens.
  • Coverage also includes all algal taxa which occur in lichens.
  • How many lichen taxa are there? This question was explored by Lücking et al. in the publication "The 2016 classification of lichenized fungi in the Ascomycota and Basidiomycota – Approaching one thousand genera" doi:10.1639/0007-2745-119.4.361, and a subsequent "Corrections and amendments" followup in the following issue (doi:10.1639/0007-2745-120.1.058). After these revisions, the authors concluded "the number of lichenized species is now tabulated at 19,409 and the number of fungal genera, families, and orders including lichens at 1,002, 119, and 40, respectively". As of 2018, the number of accepted lichenicolous fungi was 2319, including "2000 obligately lichenicolous species, subspecies or varieties, 257 lichenicolous lichens and 62 facultatively lichenicolous taxa". doi:10.1639/0007-2745-121.3.340
  • For an overview of lichens and the many related topics, see the outline of lichens.

Task force user boxes

edit

If you add {{User TF Lichen 1}} to your userpage, it will display the following box and add your name to Category:Lichen task force participants.

This user is a member of the lichen task force.

Or, if you'd prefer, add {{User TF Lichen 2}} to get the following userbox instead.

This user is a member of the lichen task force.

{{Lichen userbox}} will add the following userbox. This userbox will not add your name to Category:Lichen task force participants.

This user likes lichens.

Guidelines

Tagging and assessment

edit

Any articles that are within the scope of this project should be tagged with the project banners of WikiProject Fungi. You may also find {{WikiProject banner shell}} useful. To each of these banners, you should add |lichen = yes, as this will automatically put the page in the appropriate categories, such as Category:Lichen task force articles.

Note the lichen task force uses the World Geographical Scheme for Recording Plant Distributions with lichen flora. See WP:PLANTS/Using the WGSRPD.
