UK nationalities

edit

Can someone point me to the bit of guidance around how you describe the nationality of someone from the United Kingdom or one of its component countries i.e. British vs. English vs. Scottish vs. Welsh? I know it exists I'm just struggling to find it. Thanks in advance. 10mmsocket (talk) 08:42, 13 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

@10mmsocket, WP:UKNATIONALS essay is the only one that comes to mind, while not formal guideline/policy, clears a bit. The modern use section can be summed up as; find the most common nationality of a subject (noting some non-UK sources may be incorrect), if that fails, find the subject's self-preference. Of course any dispute may be raised at a subject's talk page. DankJae 21:02, 16 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
If WP:RS touching on the subject cannot be found, play safe & use "British". If a solid "subject's self-preference" can be found, that trumps almost all other sources. But it cannot always be assumed that someone eg born in Cardiff thinks of themselves as Welsh. British ethnic minorities often choose "British" to describe themselves, rather than a more specific identity. Johnbod (talk) 04:06, 17 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Johnbod and @DankJae. Thanks both, that's really useful. 10mmsocket (talk) 21:09, 21 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Do WP:BIO guidelines exist?

edit

Hi. Can someone tell me if WikiProject Biography has any guidelines? (I come from a city article that has clear guidelines at WP:USCITIES.)

Today I looked at the Donald Trump article and was dismayed to find his §Personal life featured first. That seems a tad disrespectful. I realize that article has seen extended controversy and so I don't want to rock the boat there, and decided to ask you instead.

I have read much of the archives on "Personal life" and can see individuals arguing on and on. The biographies I've written always start with §Early life, and sometimes §Early life and family or §Early life, family, and education. Your assessment section offers Mary Shelley as exemplar for a featured article. The linked version there begins with §Biography (to which I object). But then I looked at the live version which has been fixed to start §Life and career.

Might I suggest that some guideline would help? MOS:BIO is a good start but doesn't ever get past nomenclature. -SusanLesch (talk) 18:09, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Consensus/standard for birth_place?

edit

Biographies like Phillip Lenard use {{Infobox scientist}} which calls for parameter birth_place. When the name has changed, editors seem compelled to alter the name many possible permutations of the old and new name. I would like to know if there is a consensus here on at least which, old or modern should go first? According to Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(geographic_names)#Use_modern_names it seems the modern one should be first. Johnjbarton (talk) 02:38, 12 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Well, that guideline is mostly for the titles of articles about cities and countries. I would probably put any trivia in a note (using {{efn}}) or in the article body. The infobox doesn't need trivia. I guess I'd probably default to the place name at the time someone was born. That's what {{infobox person}} says to do, and it's what high profile good articles like George Washington do. I don't think it really matters which way it goes, though. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 04:16, 13 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Personally I don't care one way or another, but the bio articles churn because different editors decide the old/new name should exist/not exist be first/not first. I was hoping for any single choice. Johnjbarton (talk) 23:52, 14 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question: @Cloarui: Do you have access to a image that of Bahgat Saber that has an acceptable license for Wikimedia Commons or meets English Wikipedia's fair use criteria?
There is nothing from soundcloud.com/bahgat-saber-497387947 or soundcloud.com/pages/copyright that exempts this content from copyright restictions, & soundcloud.com/terms-of-use#your-content clearly states that the Any and all Content is uploaded, owned and controlled solely by you (the uploader), and not by SoundCloud. These copyright terms is for music, not for personal photos no mention of that was there. Therefore I think the image on there fits the criteria. Cloarui (talk) 16:46, 4 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Did the German Scholar Dr. Karl Reinhardt have child relatives at the end of World War II?

edit

What happened to the children who became orphans as a result of, or during, WWII? Were any children sent without first obtaining official documentation? If the answer to those questions are "yes," then consider the possibility of the following:

A child comes to the United States of America at the end of WWII. Upon arrival, he tells his name to an American (who spells it incorrectly) to later be placed on an official document of identification and given to the child to be used as his official I.D. throughout his life. That name is then passed along to his children. So on and so forth.

This is my first attempt at searching for my family heritage via philosophy and public forum. Please be kind.

My name is Latrisha Ann Clinard. I was removed from the custody of my biological parents in the United States of America when I was only 2, and they died before I could meet them. David Clinard, the brother of my father, Gary Clinard, told me a few things that might have helped me learn who I am and where I come from. Firstly, the pronunciation of my name is "Klein-art" instead of "Clunard," as I had always thought. Secondly, my father had a very high IQ. I can't remember the exact number, but I believe it was around 130-140. I do not know what that means exactly, but I remember mine being above average. I also know I am partly German, and according to my father, my name was misspelled at birth. There is no record I can find with information on my father's sires. The government buried him because I was still a minor in foster care and no one else claimed him. The only other information I have is that the mother of David Clinard is Joan Lohse; she is nearly 100 years old, but she is not the mother of Gary Clinard (my father). They have the same father, but I do not know his name.

I am beginning to consider that my father may not have known who his father was, because his father may not have been a very good one as a result of his father's father's potential involvement in World War II. 2604:5500:502C:F400:349A:3D9F:DCCC:FED3 (talk) 21:03, 14 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Paul Steed

edit

The article Paul Steed has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Aside from being created back when it was possible for IPs to do so, this page received the notability tag immediately after it was unprotected. I wouldn't go so far as to call Steed a nobody, but I believe he is Fandom-Wiki-level material that isn't notable enough for a page on a site as generalized as Wikipedia.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. 100.7.34.111 (talk) 15:00, 22 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Using LinkedIn for some biography details

edit

If secondary sources don't cover person's education in details (e. g., major/minor or honors), but person's LinkedIn has them, is it acceptable to use latter as a source? 5.178.188.143 (talk) 11:31, 24 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

See WP:RSPLINKEDIN. The account would have to be verified and the content would have to comply with policies on for BLPs and self-published sources. Potentially promotional content such as honors would probably not be appropriate without independent sourcing. Going into too much detail may also violate WP:DUE without independent sourcing to show why significant enough to include in the article. – notwally (talk) 19:46, 24 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
