Does WikiProject Geography cover all town and village articles?

edit

I've encountered many articles that fall under the scope of WP:WikiProject Cities (such as town, village, and city articles) that have also been added to WikiProject Geography (see Talk:Ferdows and Talk:Taheriyeh, towns and villages in Iran, and Talk:Lesnoye Ukolovo, a rural locality in Russia). However, the inclusion of these types of articles in WP:Geography is rare, and most town and city articles haven't been added to WP:Geography. My question is: do these articles actually belong at WP:Geography, or do they not? If they do, what criteria should be met for, say, a village article to be included in WP:Geography? And if they don't, then they could be removed from the project. Nythar (💬-🍀) 07:56, 6 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Cities is a subset of human geography. Any article which deals with a populated place should be included in Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities. Any article which deals primarily with the physical geography of a populated place should also be included in Wikipedia:WikiProject Geography. My two bits. That makes sense. I had been wondering why numerous articles were added to both WikiProjects because it didn't make sense to me why we'd include regular WP:Cities articles in WP:Geography; it seemed a bit excessive. Nythar (💬-🍀) 05:59, 8 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Looking for reviews

edit

guys I just added a lot of links to the Geography sidebar, Human geography and Geography topics templates, can some of you check to see if it is appropriate or should I continue adding links. I personally think that these templates should have all the branches of geography that there are articles of (my limit is just the articles with titles "Something geography") (not the human geography one for those outside it of course) and therefore should add their respective links to the templates Atakes Ris (talk) 12:18, 15 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

side note: all my edits are based on pre-existing wikipedia articles (see Outline of geography and Category: Geography) and aims to remove the inconsistencies in the templates Atakes Ris (talk) 13:12, 15 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Proposed swapping Vital article level 1 Human history with vital article level 2 Geography.

edit

I have proposed swapping vital article level 1 Human history with vital article level 2 Geography. This would make geography a level 1 vital article. Please join the discussion here if you are interested. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 20:47, 29 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Policy question

edit

At Indian Ocean, editors sometimes want to rename the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Gulf, perhaps because of a long-standing dispute over those names. I have been reverting those edits, not because I'm on one side or the other of the dispute, but just because we have to pick one and Persian Gulf seems to be the quasi-official name on Wikipedia.

Are my reverts consistent with policy? Can anyone cite policy saying so? Any other advice? Thanks, Mgnbar (talk) 21:18, 12 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Possibly go through the subject article's talk page, including its archives, or the same for Persian Gulf naming dispute? I made a small attempt at the former, but gave up. —DocWatson42 (talk) 10:08, 30 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Guideline for the layout of geography articles, especially settlements?

edit

Greetings and felicitations. Is there are guideline for the general layout of geography-related articles, especially settlements? I tend to see lede; name etymology, when present; history; geography (with climate as a subsection); and then things like economy and government/politics. Is this correct? —DocWatson42 (talk) 09:50, 30 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
