Usage notes

edit

is used only within words, while Î (which has the same pronunciation) is used at the beginnings and ends of words. As such, in its capital form, the letter  is only seen within words that are completely capitalized (e.g. ROMÂNIA). Î is still used within words when forming negative past participles and gerunds (e.g. neînțeles, not *“neânțeles”, although the latter can be found in some sources).
