editFrom Proto-Indo-European *(ts)ptyew- (“to spit, vomit”). Akin to Latin spuō, Albanian pështyj, Old English spīwan (English spew), Old Armenian թուք (tʻukʻ), Old Church Slavonic пльвати (plĭvati), Sanskrit ष्ठीवति (ṣṭhīvati).[1] Compare English ptui (“spitting onomatopeia”).
