From Proto-Turkic *āŕ- (to lose one's way, go astray; go mad; miss a _target).

Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰀𐰕 (āz-, to go astray, to lose one's way), Karakhanid اازْماقْ (āzmāq, to lose one's way); Turkmen āzmak (to go astray), Turkish azmak (go astray, be horny), Chuvash урма (urma, to lose mind, go mad), etc.
